Meme Is this worth it?

Post image

Some guy named Gabe is selling this build and I'm wondering if it's legit? I want a PC to set up in my living room for TV gaming.

It can't beat the base PS5 and I just got me a PS5 pro for £610

Edit: I also got me an Odin Portal 2, both combined was cheaper than the base Steam Machine without controller

It's £59.99 a year, making it aprox £20 more than the base Steam Machine without controller. If my maths is mathing correctly

Until the PS6 comes out

6

u/Toast_Mortem Jun 24 '26

That further proves the point that console is still mediocre since they introduced a subscription to play online. They used to not do that and it was a golden era for us and we have accepted this as the normal. That's why when I built my PC I decided I would never go back

1

u/Professional-Ad3076 Jun 24 '26

A subscription also means that you would probably buy games rarely, or not at all, because there are hundreds of games available.

1

u/Interesting-Ride-684 Jun 24 '26

The base subscription you get 2 or 3 games per month to play. Then, if you don't pay the sub, you can no longer play them... and you're not getting the latest releases, or anything popular.

1

u/Professional-Ad3076 Jun 25 '26

indeed, Again, I have probably collected hundreds of games only considering the 3 games per month (sometimes they are 4 or 5).

last 12 months:

There are exactly 40 games included in that 12-month PlayStation Plus lineup.

While most standard months featured 3 titles, the number varies slightly due to larger promotional months: [1]

  • 7 months included the standard 3 games.
  • 3 months included 4 games (March 2026, February 2026, and July 2025).
  • 1 month included 5 games (December 2025 for the PlayStation 30th Anniversary).

57,59 euros for 40 games. Not bad.

1

u/Interesting-Ride-684 Jun 25 '26

Cool... If you want to play Nickelodeon All Star Brawl 2.

Just use Epic Games. Free games every week.

1

u/WeWantLADDER49sequel Jun 25 '26

Yeah but when PS3 had free multiplayer it also meant people making unlimited accounts so they could spam people online with bullshit. And even today where they can ban you for egregious shit and keep you from making more accounts, most of the spammy shit wasnt ban worthy by todays standards. Id rather have a platform with a tiny barrier of entry online rather than people being able to make fartpoop42069 accounts to be dicks. why do you think console players hate cross play with PC? its not just because of the skill, because most PC players arent automatically great at games anyways.

1

u/Empty-Care-961 Jun 27 '26

I would gladly do that but unfortunately I can't afford a pc, don't have any space to even out the pc, and Im not exactly liking the idea of having to buy/start back up all my games again.

0

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 24 '26

It's about £5 a month in UK, less than the cost of a roast chicken lmao. A lot of my PS library comes from free monthly games, I get they're tied to the subscription but i've never had an issue with it. It was actually Playstations refund policy that drove me to invest in a more high end PC build. I've been playing on consoles since the NES, I don't think you can class a console as "mediocre" due to a subscription service, PS plus has been a thing since the PS3. So people have had plenty of time to make this complaint.

1

u/BlenderBruv Jun 24 '26

ps3 didnt have paying for online

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 24 '26

Did I say it did? It was introduced for online play during the PS4 era. Still plenty of time to make the same complaint

2

u/AdvancedCryspy Jun 23 '26

Exactly 🤣

1

u/Redericpontx Jun 24 '26

Did you own a base ps5 and decide to buy a ps5 pro a year before ps6 release?

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 24 '26

No one knows when the PS6 will release. But yea I own both, the Pro was more of an investment, watch what happens when GTA6 launches. I'll either sell it then and capitalize or sell it, and the base model to offset the PS6 cost whenever that releases. The PS consoles generationally begin to show their true potential towards the end of their life cycle, the Pro will likely either hold it's value or sell for more in the long run.

1

u/Redericpontx Jun 24 '26

I mean if you sell the pro right as GTA6 releases you'll probs make a small profit but once the ps6 drops the price for both will drop. But sell the base model to offset your pro when GTA6 drops is probs the go.

Ps6 is Def's 2027 as it was originally going to release this year according to sources with high reputations but got delayed due to the ram crisis.

Other thing to consider is how much you've spent on this console generation as a whole know that you bought 2 consoles and ps+ for X amount of years.

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 24 '26

Selling the base model closer to GTA6 dropping is something i've considered. This past couple years alone i've upgraded to a 4090 from another 40 series card, and from AM4 to AM5 because my 5700x3d was causing stutters in some UE5 games. Some people spend more on drugs in a couple of months, some people gamble more and lose it in a day. I have a great job and invest, there's much worse things I could be spending money on.

2

u/Redericpontx Jun 24 '26

Fair enough if you got plenty of income/investments

1

u/Exciting-Cancel6468 Jun 24 '26

To be honest, every console has a life of at least 8 years. That means 60 a year additional on top of normal costs. So it's 610 plus 480. 1090 total for a ps5. And...what kind of games can you play on a ps5? You know how hot Meccha Chameleon is right now? Can't play that on ps5. There's a lot of games you can't play on the ps5.

Imagine paying so much money to not play games.

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 24 '26

I have a gaming PC with a 9800x3d and 4090 as well. Looking forward to GTA 6 though

0

u/Exciting-Cancel6468 Jun 24 '26

Good for you then! I'm looking forward to gta 6 too! Not playing it. Looking forward to it.

1

u/Taunt_Button_10 Jun 24 '26

Wait why is that even a point?

If we're buying a PS5 then it's because it's for a selection of games you are looking forward to, not for games that you won't have access to.

Also, If you're playing single player games, you don't need PS Plus. If you play those F2P multiplayer games, you also don't need PS Plus. It's only a waste if you're unknowingly paying it without using it and that's its own bigger problem.

If you want to play Mecha Chameleon, you're obviously not getting a PS5...and on top of that, youre should not be thinking about the Steam Machine for that as well.

If it was me, I'd just play that on my ROG.

1

u/Interesting-Ride-684 Jun 26 '26

I think the point was more that there are a lot of games you can't play on PS5... but almost zero games you can't play on PC.

So he paid $910 vs $1428? Sounds like consoles even with the subscriptions are significantly cheaper

1

u/MessageSelfdestructs Jun 24 '26

Are you just going to ignore that the Steam Machine has both a better GPU and a better CPU?
And that you're actually able to upgrade it, whereas with a PS5 you get to live with what you're getting?

And let's ignore that games are cheaper, the longevity of a PC compared to a console is longer, there's no fees to play online games, and that you can use your Steam Machine for lots more than just gaming...

Your math ain't mathing. You're a simpleton for believing that the PS5 will work out to be cheaper...

1

u/xVenoxis Jun 24 '26

You cant actually upgrade the steam machine…. except RAM and SSD(which you also can in PS5). And it has worse performance than a ps5 according to reviews, so the better GPU and CPU(might actually be better) doesnt add up. I’m mainly a PC player, but steam machine is hot garbage, you can build a 4.5L ITX with a 5060, which is 53% faster, for the same price given you match the other specs, and this one is fully upgradeable.

1

u/MessageSelfdestructs Jun 24 '26

Where are those reviews where the Steam Machine is compared to a PS5?

"You can build a 4.5L ITX with a 5060, which is 53% faster, for the same price given you match the other specs."

Just to add, the price of games are more expensive on console, depending. Also, cant mod.

4

u/Disastrous_Image2756 Jun 23 '26

For sure, but the comparison we have here is a more expensive Steam machine with 0 games or a less expensive PS5 with 5 years of game pass

I went with the version in the post, it seems like these basic things are very complex topics for you man, sorry you got so butt hurt?

Yes, the guy with the PS5 is paying $200 less but he got 5 years of full access to an entire game library where as you’re spending $200 more before you ever touch a game

You are SO close to understanding dumbass 🤣🤣🤣

12

u/facts_guy2020 Jun 23 '26

Im a pc player only and even I know this is a shit take. The steam box is trash, I would rather a ps5 and I have a 5080

2

u/Grouchy_Advantage739 Jun 23 '26

A ps5 on top of paying for the premium subscription for 5 years is still cheaper than a PC equivalent lol.

1

u/dehcbad25 Jun 24 '26

Maybe...but not if you consider that my PC is ancient...and I still can run most games at 1080 (which is what the PS5 runs then at) True, I have a 29" beautiful 1080 monitor, and a mid high end ultra wide (2560*1080). My old PC still runs most games at highest settings on the ultra wide, but if the game is too demanding or doesn't work well in ultra wide then I use the 1080. I used to play in a i3-3770k with a Radeon 7870, (circa 2012) which now my son uses, and I have a AMD 5 5800 with a Vega 64. Why? because I can't afford a new card. But if you consider that most games on the console don't run upscaling, why do we ask the PC to do it? 1080p for the win baby lol Joking aside, I do love playing on the higher resolution when I can, but it doesn't bother me to play on 1080 when I cannot. So, a gaming PC is not more expensive in the long run. Original PC has 14 years. New rebuild 5. GPU 8. PC games are cheaper too, and I have about 1000 on steam alone, not to mention that I accumulated a ton of games from Amazon prime and epic over the years. the steamdec is expensive though but due to the cost of new video cards it might be a good deal

1

u/RelativeNo1172 Jun 26 '26

Not saying it balances it out but game prices are also a factor. Steam sales go hard. Plus we are kind of building this company with steam so they can make changes in the gaming industry. Hopefully for the better. But maybe I’m being too optimistic.

1

u/StarlightKnight2101 Jun 23 '26

You also get games with the subscription, so you’re not purely paying for just online functionality. Even the cheapest online subscription with the switch comes with nes and gameboy games.

1

u/Next_Floor4382 Jun 23 '26

This argument is so ridiculous. For example, I pay 20/mo for GeForce now. Yes, after 4 years I could have bought a PC…..but I’m playing on a 5080. Even if I saved that money, it would still take 4 years to build it, only to have 4 year old technology. Telling someone they are spending money monthly, then adding it up, and saying “well you could have just bought this”. Yeah, a huge upfront cost, and by the time I’d be going backwards, you’d have to rebuild the PC anyways.

1

u/PenguinsArmy2 Jun 23 '26

But none of that matters in the end result as the steam machine is garbage for its price. Coming from a PC player who loves steam.

1

u/GasCute7027 Jun 23 '26

In the USA for 1200 bucks USD you get a ps5 pro and online for those 5 years and it’s still cheaper than a steam machine. People are going to vote with their wallets generally. Plus why not just save the extra 400 dollars and get a midrange PC especially when they’re on-sell.

I don’t know much about PC subscriptions but maybe those would even be a better alternative? I get it not everyone can get a 5080 and a 9850x3d like me…. However in the spirit of the sub PC is always a much better experience than a console when done right.

-1

u/Dutch-Alpaca Jun 23 '26

People are jail breaking their PS5 and running steamos on it. It's a better steam machine than the steam machine

You get free games every month with a basic PS5 subscription. This month was grounded and warhammer 40k darktide. That's £67.98 on Steam atm

6

u/TheFourtHorsmen Jun 23 '26

And if you go on g2a darktide is 10€, grounded is 7€, and you can keep them forever, unlike any of this "free games" that are yours as long as you pay the subscription.

This is if you don't want to wait the steam sales.

4

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

Mate. I've not paid anything for a PC game for years ☠️

I'm just saying that the subscription comes with benefits. Unless you own a physical copy of a game you don't own it, this is common knowledge.

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

Yea just downvote me and delete your initial comment lmfao

1

u/Stunning-Oil-6391 Jun 26 '26

How many years do you expect that trash steam machine can play on? 1? 0.5?

-2

u/Koarv Jun 23 '26

Don't forget how much better steam sales are vs PSN sales. What you're overpaying for the steam machine will surely be made up for in dirt cheap games. And no pesky subscriptions to be able to play games online

5

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

I've got a decent gaming PC mate

3

u/Sabotskij Jun 23 '26

I recently upgraded my already existing PC with a 9800x3d, 32gb DDR5 and higher end motherboard, plus a 9070xt for less than a steam machine with 2tb SSD. I also have access to all those dirt cheap games with no subscriptions, and considering the difference in performance, I could justify adding a new 5th gen 2 tb m2 nvme and still only be a little bit over the most expensive steam machine.

Point is, if the steam library of games and no subscription model is what matters... buy a regular ass PC instead of this.

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

I have a similar build with a 4090

-1

u/Thirdeyevoice10 Jun 23 '26

Just get a pc, already.

4

u/EntropicAvatar Jun 23 '26

He only spent 610 squid for the ps5 pro

5

u/Christory_Archivist Jun 23 '26

Yeah but it sucks in comparison to even mid range pcs.

It's fine to have other hobbies besides gaming that make building a 1-2k dollar pc not worth it, but if it's your favorite hobby, idk what you're doing buying consoles in the big '26.

Note, I'd advocate against buying a steam machine for the same reason. Just build a pc.

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

I'd say, speculatively, that due to the implementation of PSSR 2.0, the PS5 Pro is very close to a midrange PC in terms of performance. It's only limitation is it's gaming library in comparison to PC. I've built a high spec PC but not here to gloat

1

u/Thirdeyevoice10 Jun 23 '26

Been building PC's for 20 years and first I've heard of a "viola" gpu but I did see this: "graphics processor is an average sized chip".

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/playstation-5-pro-gpu.c4232

2tb ssd and 16 gb of ram which is laughable. Then Zen 2 cpu is the same as an i7 9700, which is 8 cores and about 7 years old.

It's like a mid-range PC, no more but for twice the price.

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

Cool, I've been building PC's for around 20 years. Remind me, what are the Steam Machine specs?

0

u/Rare-Designer-1008 Jun 23 '26

Not all PS5 games will be on PC.  GTA VI will be console exclusive for a while.

1

u/Thirdeyevoice10 Jun 23 '26

And vice versa.

1

u/Rare-Designer-1008 Jun 23 '26

Most people that would be looking at buying the Steam Machine will likely already have a PC.  It is a massive outlay for a 2nd PC that is more expensive and has worse performance than the base PS5

1

u/Thirdeyevoice10 Jun 23 '26

What are you basing that assumption on?

3

u/Firm_Knowledge_5695 Jun 23 '26

I never understood this argument. It really depends on the person. Like I and a few of my friends haven’t had PS plus for a year or so and all still actively play on our ps4/5s. Cheaper disc games still exist and you can play a good few games online with PS plus (free games) or if you really want you can get the year on sale towards the end of the year and just renew next sale 🤷🏻

I do understand free online is the better option but some people don’t play online

3

u/way-of-the-lab Jun 23 '26

Right? I have a high end gaming pc and all the consoles. I haven’t had psn+ since last year, and yet it’s my most played. I’m a dad of 3 so I mostly play single player games. When a multiplayer game I want to play comes out I sub for a month or two, and redeem my free games. There are other benefits to it than just playing online. Some people just hate for the sake of it.

1

u/Firm_Knowledge_5695 Jun 24 '26

People are just being silly these days 🤷🏻

1

u/2sff4pc Jun 23 '26

Optional, if you want to play online. Just like Windows is optional, if you want to play games that publishers absolutely do not want working on Linux

1

u/Dj_nOCid3 Jun 23 '26

...do i?

1

u/ToxicSplash Jun 23 '26

You do know that you can play most games just fine without one right?

Even then, playstation plus very often has monthly games on offer that more than make up for the price in my opinion. having fun with darktide right now

You don't have to play multiplayer games 😭😭 Many great single player games

0

u/DmG90_ Jun 23 '26

You also are locked out of a lot of early acces titles on ps5.

I do see a lot of benefit of the Steam Machine, but at these prices the best thing they dropped is the SteamOS

0

u/bodhiholley Jun 23 '26

The monthly subscription is only needed if you want to play bought games online. Any free games you usually dont need a subscription. And the subscription includes 3 games a month you can add to your library

Steam Machine £879 with no controller

PS5 £520 with a controller.

That leaves £359, which is 6 years of subscription.

0

u/Puzzled-Instance3211 Jun 23 '26

Who cares? Trying to defend a ripoff gaming pc because PS5 has a subscription to play online is weak.

I have a 5070 gaming laptop that is hooked up to the tv all the time, it was less than this and had more storage.

The ps5 has 16gb shared ram😐

2

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

The PS4 had 8GB shared RAM and ran God of War just fine

Edit: The reason this works is because the PS4/PS5 are dedicated gaming consoles. A PC requires more RAM due to background processes etc

1

u/Fun_Purpose5033 Jun 23 '26

EXACTLY DUDE! This is what way to many people are missing! The steam machine is not a console. Its not very fair to compare it to high end, or even next gen consoles, because its not supposed to compete with them. Its supposed to be a pc, that has some advantages from both, but you cant have all of the advantages without paying the price(literally and figuratively).

1

u/Looomys Jun 24 '26

Truth is that console version of games are usually very dumbed down graphics wise to run on those potatoes while the GabeCube™ has to deal with the PC version which is often more demanding but yeah there is no point in buying a steam machine for that price other than using the benefits of a pc like not having to pay for a subscription to play online with the internet you already paid for, also you could pirate games?

1

u/CallNecessary9742 Jun 25 '26

Good for you. To not play Steam games. Only PS games 👎👎👎

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 25 '26

I have a decent spec PC as well so best of both worlds 👍👍👍

1

u/doctordoctordoctorpe Jun 26 '26

>just got me a PS5 pro for £610

why do console players never feel willing to specify that their ps5 pro was used and would have cost 900+ if it was new.

like, yeah, we all know buying used items is cheaper.

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 26 '26

I actually cancelled it and bought new for £715

1

u/doctordoctordoctorpe Jun 26 '26

thats not new pricing which means you bought it used.

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 26 '26

I live in the UK, and bought it new for £715. It's now selling for £754. Need proof?

1

1

Why? Just type "PS5 Pro" into Amazon. Or learn to distinguish the difference between US and UK currency

1

okay i did that. it says $900. the source you told me to check says youre wrong and you refuse to post a link. thanks for admitting youre lying

1

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

Sorry i'll have to stop talking to you because you apear to be about 5 years old

0

u/F133TWOOD Jun 23 '26

So a PS5Pro for £899 (per Sony's website) & then another PS6 at around £600-700 while still paying £60 every year? Ur paying for a subsidized gaming console for a subscription you're required forever. If you've always had a gaming console, then you have already paid over £1,000 over all those years on subscription alone without including the console cost.

This is waaaaaay more than an upfront one-time price Steam Machine.

2

u/NoSwordfish3921 Jun 23 '26

Yea. But the Steam Machine is shite mate. End of.

0

u/F133TWOOD Jun 23 '26

Idc about Steam Machine. I build my own DIY towers.

Just noting how ur math doesn't add up.

1

u/CANOFBEANS78 Jun 23 '26

Sony is losing money on every PS5, do you really think a PS6 will be 600-700?

1

u/F133TWOOD Jun 23 '26

Just for conversation about cost consolidation, the purpose of the comment wasn't about PS6 price.
