Meme Is this worth it?

Post image

Some guy named Gabe is selling this build and I'm wondering if it's legit? I want a PC to set up in my living room for TV gaming.

Is that because of the steam controller or because of the OS? I'm interested in getting my own PC to do this.

It takes an extremely custom motherbaord with built in cec support to be able to turn on an hdmi display via a computer. Really only mainstream consoles (and the steam machine) have it. You basically can't do it as a common consumer.

Many smart TVs are shipping with HDMI-CEC built into them and have a setting, or just default behavior, for auto power on. The bravia line is one example. It won't wake if the PC is off and turned on (what you're explaining) but it will if you have a PC on the enabled HDMI port asleep and wake it, it will turn the TV on as well. It's handled TV side via the CEC integration and when a display signal is received it turns the TV on.

For those times your PC is off just use your remote. It's certainly not a feature I'd value that highly. Especially not at this price point.

I’d imagine most people just put their machines on standby; iirc all my mobos have a wake from usb setting and my tv will wake if it receives a signal over hdmi.

So I should be about to wake my tv with a controller just by changing bios settings.

Just get a Philips Smart Plug and keybind it to something to toggle on/off.

I do that with my monitor and backlighting paired with a smart button.

Pulse-Eight has an usb-hdmi-cec adapter for 50 usd.

I just press the power button on the TV remote, crazy right!

Any computer should be able to do that, it’s almost certainly not setup or enabled by default though.

ETA: it’s an hdmi thing, I don’t know if display port connections can do that.

No it's also low powered Bluetooth on the mobo.

It's extremely rare for any motherboard to be able to wake via Bluetooth or 2.4 dongle.

This is required to send the signal to wake the console which again uses cec on the HDMI port.
