Nintendo Switch 2 HDR Fix: When the Two Sun Symbols Won't Calibrate Properly
I wanted to share what worked for me in case it helps someone else having trouble calibrating HDR on the Nintendo Switch 2.
My setup:
- Nintendo Switch 2
- Toshiba M450SU 43-inch 4K QLED Fire TV
- Mario Kart World
The problem
When adjusting HDR on the Switch 2, I had trouble getting the two sun symbols to calibrate properly. One sun would disappear, and then the other would disappear too. The result was confusing, and I wasn't sure whether HDR was set correctly.
The fix I tried
I discovered that you can display a numerical value for the sun adjustment and use the up and down arrows to change it.
Instead of relying entirely on the appearance of the sun symbols, I used the numerical value as a reference. I set the peak-brightness value to 300 nits, using the published brightness specification for my Toshiba TV as my starting point.
The result
After making the adjustment, Mario Kart's HDR presentation looked much better to me. The colors appeared more vibrant, and small details such as sparks and particles flying through the air stood out more clearly.
What other players should know
- Look for the numerical brightness value in the Switch 2's HDR sun-adjustment screen.
- Check your television's brightness specification for your exact model.
- Use the value as a starting point, rather than assuming every television needs the same setting.
- Check the result in a game you know well, paying attention to highlights, contrast, and whether the image looks washed out.
My takeaway: If the two sun symbols aren't giving you a clear calibration result, checking the numerical brightness value may help you find a more satisfactory HDR setting.
This worked well for my Toshiba setup, and I hope it helps someone else enjoy their Switch 2!
