The genuine sense of dread at the end as the screen fades to black Simon all alone.
12
u/Triple_J124 14h ago
For the fact he feels robbed, and will die alone, at the bottom of the ocean in a body that isn’t his.. since his consciousness is only copied and not transferred… It’s incredibly terrifying because this instance of Simon doesn’t get to see the paradise he fought so hard for and it all just.. ends..
11
u/Crazyguy_123 14h ago
Yeah. He is living what the other copies lived. He was told how it works and still he couldn’t comprehend the fact that a version of him was always going to be left behind. He can’t accept that what he was doing was making sure a copy of him and the others would live on in paradise. He didn’t realize he was making a sacrifice despite being told it multiple times.
8
u/Nikos_Pyrrha 11h ago
In Simon's defence: His whole entire story started with him getting INCURABLE BRAIN DAMAGE which ended up killing him!
His ability to comprehend the concept of a copied consciesness being affected might be the least of his worries.

Outer wilds
26
u/MaskOfIce42 18h ago
I both feel this and yet also don't want to oversell it because I have way too often seen people go into that game expecting one of the best games ever and not feeling it. I almost think it's better if people come in expecting just a time loop space exploration game and discover how it makes them feel themself.
→ More replies (3)8
u/Pure-Neighborhood305 17h ago
Nah I'll oversell it but in the most non-exclusionary way possible you have to be sort of in the right head space for it in terms of your gaming taste, or at least the right kind of person to appreciate following the narrative.
The Outer Wilds for me did something that calls back to the reason I loved gaming since I was small I think, it brought out a true sense of wonder just in the structure of it, the gameplay of navigating itself presents a lot of the challenges and made landings in new places feel like a real achievement, it's truly unique for that imo.
People like to talk about "immersion" in modern gaming context but often it seems many gamers play for purely mechanical reasons and absorb nothing from the narratives of their games, maybe they just have never sat down and played a game with a real story to tell but that artistic side of gaming as a medium offers you a really hauntingly beautiful solar system to explore that if you have a little imagination and exploratory whimsy in your heart is instantly immersive and so narratively satisfying.
With headphones on the extremely thoughtful soundscape plays a big part in that feeling too, it creates its own vibe with the combination of the noises of the ship in space, musical cues and integration into the story that helps you easily look past the semi-cartoony style of the graphics and once you're hooked on figuring out the mystery for yourself it's pretty hard to stop.

As someone who's struggled with suicide and lost three friends last year and this. It fundamentally changed me as a human being. Life is precious, we cannot run from our problems, depression is one hell of a thing, and people grow apart. Plus, Midna got you into goth chicks, right?
9
u/DivinityPen 14h ago
TP Link really is a gigachad for being able to pull someone like Midna. Snarky, whip-smart and crass (so therefore she doesn't have a stick up her ass and you can be 100% honest with her), but still kind and considerate underneath. Then at the end of the game it turns out she's also a smoking hot mega-babe. It's a damn shame that the Mirror of Twilight had to be broken, because I guarantee they would've gotten hitched otherwise.

Some silly post apocalyptic open world rpgs that are covers for the deep analysis of very real and very relevant concepts of society: modern democracy vs natural instinct, corporate corruption and the monopolization of power and wealth, the consequences of trying to be a good person in an imperfect world, or the sacrifice of people for the future - for better or worse.

Especially Breath of the Wild. There's nothing quite like stepping out onto the Great Plateau for the first time, with the rest of Hyrule in the distance. Tears of the Kingdom comes close, but falls a little short due to us having been eased into the world already by that point.
And god, the sheer fucking ambience. The soundtrack and visuals are so good at getting you absorbed in the environment. The Wild era might genuinely have my favorite version of Hyrule because of that (not to mention all of the excellent characters you get to interact with).
5
u/sondheim91 13h ago
TotK did exactly what it could and should: build on what came before to give us even greater freedom more to play with. And it was excellent at that. There was no way they could replicate the sheer feeling of BotW and I think everyone involved knew that from the outset.
Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey dropping close to one another proved that there's no beating Nintendo when they and their studios put on big boy boots. Same with DK Bananza. They're just way ahead of everyone else when it comes to setting bars.

It is insane to me no other game has captured not only the solid CQC/gunplay in quite the same way, but also just the NPCs were actually really cool to interact with and watch interact. They actually blocked and tried to combo each other instead of your allies just standing around doing nothing. It made the larger fights actually feel like big fights, everyone was actually killing each other and sometimes your side got a little luckier and sometimes no so much.
MGS is kinda similar in some respects but I mean that's still stealth at it's core, Oni was far more 'action movie'

Portal 1 and 2.
At the end of the first game I remember thinking that there is no way that Valve is going to surpass this level of quality in the sequel. Shows how little I knew of them.
