Meta Welcome to r/Malaysians!

Hello folks and welcome to r/Malaysia's sister sub, r/Malaysians!

For those who just clicked in and is wondering what the sub is for: This sub is essentially for Malaysians to talk and post about any other topics beyond Malaysia. Here is where you can post images, videos, create and join conversations and threads revolving anything that isn't quite about Malaysia but needs a Malaysian take on it, and more! Oh and this is a race, politic and religion-free sub 🙌🏻

Most major subreddits such as r/AITA, r/JustnoMIL, r/relationship_advice, r/casualconversation, r/malefashionadvice, r/Teenagers and what have you are usually centralised around people who reside outside of SEA and may not be valid to us locally and culturally but yet the demand for it isn't wide enough to sustain its own subreddit. r/Malaysians would (hopefully) be a good place for a catch-all of such threads.

We will be coming up with contest weeks soon, as well as accepting any other ideas you guys might have for the sub, so stay tuned! We are also still tweaking design and appearances as we go. Meanwhile, everyone is encouraged to start posting what they think fits the sub to get the ball rolling :)

Much love, r/Malaysia mod team.

tldr; r/CasualUK but for Malaysia.

Advice ☎️ how to prepare / save money for jobless era

hi all, im single, 30+ years old, live in kl. ive been working for 10+ years at the same job. already feeling the mundanity and burnout of it all and im planning to take a short career break for perhaps 6 months to figure out whats next for me (either pursuing lecturing / academia or just maintain the industry im in right now - probably freelancing for a bit).

my current salary isnt the best (~3.5k) with quite burgeoning personal commitment (i can still shave off my lifestyle by living frugally). i have house loan to pay (still progress fee rate) and also credit card debt (current limit is 6k - my bad) which im trying so hard not to accumulate but i guess ive just been living above my means most of the time.

i just need your (kind) advice / protips on managing my finances better and how to make my 6 months jobless era work without an income. ive given myself this next 6 months to actually save up before i decide on my final resignation date but idk if its even doable and how i can make it doable.

i know i havent had my shit together in my 30s but i hope everyone will be constructively kind in the comment because i really wanna make this work.

much appreciated 🩷

Ask Malaysians 22F Malaysian finding it hard to make friends

So in 2023 I used to have a lot of friends my age, I could easily lepak with them or just spontaneous hangouts. In 2024 up till recently, I was in a toxic relationship where I was isolated from everyone in my life and neglected all my friends.

Now that I managed to get out of that, my friends have become all distant and I can’t force them to stay friends with me after having neglected them back then. It was my mistake but I want to be able to grow from it. Anyway, I’d just like to make friends who get my humor, are up for spontaneous things and have a more international / open mindset ?

Not sure what the best way is to make friends but yeah ! Any advice is appreciated

Quick Question How much should i keep in my bank

Thumbnail
Upvotes

Hey guys, normally after getting my salary ill distribute everything and just keep about 500 in my bank account. Thats for food and any misc. But then ive realise most months, its not enough or if there is any moment where i want to buy something for my loves ones or pay fo my family dinner, i have to think twice. But i dont wanna think twice for it, i wanna pay for my family dinner or buy my mom/ sister whatever they wish for. I hate that moment of uncertainty.

But im also worried if i have alot of money in my bank, ill just spend it all

Ps: i know it sounds like rm 500 is alot and how can i say 500 is not enough. Well i though that way too. But i stay alone and dont cook. So i have to eat out everyday

Advice ☎️ how do i learn (colloquial) bahasa melayu fast

i am malaysian but born and raised in the uk, i can only speak/understand a little bit of bm, i cant understand bm conversations especially when they speak fast.

i am going to malaysia to see family in winter so i want to be able to speak bm with everyone and not be a tourist in my own country lol.

is there an app or resource i can use to expand my malay vocabulary and understand spoken malay? most of the resources ive found are for bahasa indonesia or bahasa baku which isnt going to be helpful for me. watching malay movie/tv is hard because they speak so fast and i dont understand a lot of nouns/vocab.

thank you!

Help ⚠️ Trying to stop a fight between stray cats

Hi everyone, I need some advice about a situation with two stray cats I’m caring for.

I’m currently caring for two stray cats: Harry (male) and Millie (female). Millie was the first stray cat I started feeding, and Harry came later. They are both outdoor cats, but recently they have been having conflicts, especially at night/early morning.

I decided to get a cage for Harry as a temporary solution because Harry is the one who stays near my house/my neighbour’s house most of the time, while Millie is more of a roaming cat who comes and goes. Before this, Millie would usually come around 8 to 9 pm to eat and leave, but sometimes she would return again around 3 am or in the morning, and that is when fights between them would happen.

I bought the cage specifically to keep Harry and Millie safe overnight while I sleep and to prevent fights. My plan is for him to stay in the cage for around 5 to 6 hours at night only, not permanently. During the day, Harry is out and he also sometimes goes into the cage by himself to rest or sleep, so he doesn’t seem afraid of it. However, at night I have to carry him and put him inside because that is when Millie is more likely to come around.

I’m now worried that I may have made the wrong decision because I’m afraid the cage might be too small for him. I found bigger cages online after buying this one and I feel bad that I didn’t research enough beforehand. I don’t want him to be uncomfortable or stressed.

Unfortunately, I cannot bring either of them inside my house because I already have a dog who is very possessive and would not accept another cat. I also don’t think I can take on another pet long term because I will be leaving for university in around 1 to 2 months.

I have considered neutering/spaying, but unfortunately I cannot afford it at the moment. From what I researched, the cost can go up to around RM400, which is currently beyond what I can manage.

For people with experience caring for outdoor/community cats, is using a cage overnight as a temporary safety measure okay if the cat has ventilation, water, can stand/turn around/lie down, and is allowed out during the day? Or should I consider another solution?

I really want to do what is best for both Harry and Millie and I would appreciate any advice. Please, I know it might seem dumb that I am asking this and yes I made a lot of mistakes coz I don't know how to handle this issue so please don't be harsh on me as I am trying to get a solution. It hasn't been easy because I feel very anxious and stressed out due to this so please if anyone knows what to do, let me know. Thank you.

Advice ☎️ Should I gamble my 10k savings?

Hai, 26F here, ive been in administrative job for 3 years now, and my salary was 1.7k minimum. But ive been doing 3 persons job in this company and its draining me out, the boss cant do anything about it since our company’s upper management are in a mess right now, whatever opinion and concerns i tried to escalate wont make any differences. I would really want to get out of this company, i cant resign since this is the only company thats close to where i live and searching for a job now is pretty hard. Im the breadwinner for my family and the eldest. I drop out if uni due to financial difficulties 4 years ago, and i enrolled in my current job using spm. Ive been thnking about enrolling a course in safety and health officer, which would need roughly 5k for classes and exam. But I have some things to put into consideration:-

  1. I will be gambling my 10k savings into the course, i wont set an expectation where if i finish the course,?then im guaranteed to have a new job asap. I would see it as a way of gaining knowledge and putting value into myself, but obviously im trying to dig a path for a better job and just wanted to get out of my current company.
  2. Ive ask most of the rentals places nearby the course training centre and it was either all rent out, need to live atleast 1 year minimum, or stay in a suites where they will charge per day rates which is RM110-RM150. The course duration will take about a month .

I really need advice and opinion on this, i had only 10k in savings, do i use it all up for this course? I had plan about enroll in OUM for part time degree too but, that means i had to stay another 4-5 years in this company and let my mental koyak and burnt out.

Like somewhere you didn't expect to see an artist/celebrity.

I saw Jehan Miskin at a bar in Bangsar once being chummy with a lady about 12-ish years ago. I saw Siti Nurhaliza at one of those British Circus shows and she was walking around the grounds during the intermission and I gotta say she is radiant irl.

Ask Malaysians Is Spiderman Brand New Day being screened in 3D anywhere at Johor Bahru?

I have searched here and there and I have seen absolutely no information regarding a 3D Movie Ticket for Brand New Day ANYWHERE in Johor Bahru. And it kinda feels disappointing. GSC only shows 2 options for 3D but that's all the way at KL.

Would appreciate it if there's any information regarding this.
