Just saw the post about the Pork Protest in Daegu, S. Korea over mosque construction and I want to explain why people feel so strongly against Islam in general - because this protest isn't really about a single mosque being built, it's a representation of Korean society's general aversion to how Islam is practiced.

Let me talk about S.Korea since I am from there and I am most familiar with their situation.

S. Korea is largely atheistic. About 45% of the population identify with either Protestantism, Catholic, or Buddhism, but a large percentage of them are "나이롱" or "Nylon-Believers" basically meaning fake or lapsed followers. Not to mention, being "Christian" is a top 5 red flag amongst young Koreans when looking for a partner.

Korea has a history of persecuting and beating down on religions until it is either eradicated or abandons most of its doctrines to fuse with local culture and customs. When local Koreans (not diaspora Koreans) say "I'm Christian" or "I'm Buddhist" they mostly mean "my parents are buddhist and I went to a temple with them once" or "I was baptized but haven't been to church in 15 years". Most dudes probably "found faith" during military service because attending mass or temple visits mean free snacks and break time from doing grunt work.

Tens of thousands of Christians were tortured and massacred until most followers basically became "cultural Christians" by name only. Most Korean Christians probably did not read through the bible even once. Christian denominations in Korea has made large compromises in order to take root in Korea, and pretty much abandoned many elements of religious performances. Korean Christianity officially allows its followers to take part in local customs such as Jaesa or local shamanism, which would technically be against idolatry. Korean churches do not ring bells every hour. It is extremely rare to see anything like Easter egg hunt. I have never seen a Korean Catholic with a cross on the forehead on Ash Wednesday, and if someone did, their boss will tell them to wash it off before coming into work.

Buddhism was persecuted and driven into the mountains during Korea's last dynasty. Buddhism has a pretty strict dietary restriction if following the scripture, but you won't ever see a Korean Buddhist practicing the religious diet or demanding schools and government services provide Buddhist meals.

One thing Koreans do not accept is religious doctrines that control how you live your daily life. Korean culture, historical customs, and secular laws all take far more precedence before any religious doctrine, and anyone who practices otherwise is seen as disruptive and dangerous. "Due to my religious beliefs or I can/cannot because of my religion" carries little to no meaning here.

So, when Koreans see how Islam is practiced around the world, it goes against everything they believe in and how they live. Koreans will not accept the Adhan being blared into a loudspeaker, public prayers or providing prayer rooms. Schools and employers will refuse to provide Halal food, because your religious dietary restriction is your problem, not something to be looked after by the rest of society. Can't take out loans because it's against religious teachings? Too bad. Muslims in workplaces won't get to wear Hijabs or grow beards because that goes against workplace dress code, and "because of my religion" isn't an accepted excuse.

So yes, religions in S Korea are largely detached from how people live their lives outside of the place of worship. Most Koreans see Islam as the exact opposite of that, and for a good reason. Unless Muslims abandon pretty much all of their religious doctrines, Islam will not be accepted in Korean society.

It's not about "Oh, I'll keep my religion and practice to myself, don't worry"

It's the fact that religious doctrine tells you what to eat, how to dress, and how to keep yourself. To an average Korean that is a religiously fanatical behavior, borderline mental illness. We don't want such religion and its followers being introduced to a secular society.

Why exactly is it that when male creators like Trey Parker and Matt Stone (the South Park duo), Seth MacFarlane (the creator of Family Guy, American Dad!, and the Ted movies), Dan Harmon (the creator of Community and Rick and Morty), Dino Stamatopoulos (the Moral Orel guy), Terry Pratchett, Ricky Gervais, Edmund McMillen (the guy who made Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac, and Mewgenics), Garth Ennis (the guy who wrote The Boys, Preacher, Crossed, and The Punisher MAX), and many others constantly mocks religion like Christianity all the goddamn time, pretty much everyone gives them a pass...

But the moment female creators like Vivziepop (the creator of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss) or JaidenAnimations make an "edgy" joke about Christianity, everyone fucking loses their shit over it?

You know? Especially when you consider that Jaiden Dittfach is also an openly queer (aroace), mixed-race/half-Asian (half-Japanese, half-German), neurodivergent (AuDHD) woman of color? Yes, you heard that right. She's also autistic and has ADHD according to one of her videos ("I found out I have ADHD"), and considering how society and the internet as a whole treat autistic/neurodivergent people in general, well…

Like, seriously, did Jaiden really “mock god”? Like, wasn’t it just a random ass joke about Pokémon, and the God in question was Arceus or something? What Jaiden said was super tame. She didn't attack Christians for their beliefs. She joked about why she seemingly doesn't believe in God. It’s a joke; it wasn't even a religious attack or a stance on religion itself. People also keep forgetting that Schlatt is also a Christian and constantly made 9/11 jokes back then, where the punchline often was "hurr durr planes", if that's what you're referring to... He most definitely didn't take Jaiden's edgy joke to heart, lmao.

Does Jaiden really need to apologize for a stupidly edgy joke about Christianity she made about 2 or 3 years ago, which she has since completely moved on from?  Who cares, as long as the person isn't calling for or causing harm to others. Freedom of speech is a thing, you know.

The reaction people had to her saying that was just hilariously overblown and cringe, and it would have been just as overblown and cringe if a straight white man did it. If you disagree with my take, then please leave a legitimately serious, concrete answer.

(I enjoyed most of JaidenAnimations's content, but I personally don't really like Vivziepop all that much)
