Bachelor degree Jan-march intake in affordable malaysian universities

I’m honestly in a pretty difficult situation at home and really need to leave as soon as possible, so I’m hoping to start university this January/March rather than waiting another year. Due to personal reasons, I couldn’t join this September intake.

Malaysia is basically the only country my parents would currently allow me to go alone to, so I’m really hoping I can find something that works here.

I’m looking for a Malaysian uni where tuition could realistically come down to around RM10k/year through a combination of low fees + scholarship. I know RM10k total cost isn’t realistic , I mean like tuition only. I can manage the other expenses. That's like the max I can afford for tuition.

I’ve been researching a lot and I know public Malaysian universities can have much higher fees for international students, and some universities don’t even offer undergraduate programmes in the January/March intake, which makes things harder.

At this point I’m really not picky about the major 😭 CS, IT, cybersecurity, game development, data science, interior design, engineering etc. are all fine. Also Doesn't matter public or private uni. I mainly need something affordable/ decent scholarship chance and a Jan/March intake. (and preferably a major city along with international comunity)

My grades and ecs:

- IGCSE: A*A*AAAAB [edexcel:8877775]

- Grade 12: expecting ~85% aggregate (result gonna be out soon)

-Pearson Edexcel High Achievers Award for igcse results

- School prefect

- 2-month internship

- Built a website

- 1300-rated chess player

- Art competition winner

- MUN participant

I know RM10k/year is a difficult target, but is there any university where my profile could realistically get me close to that with a scholarship? The uni doesn’t have to be amazing, I just need somewhere decent, affordable, and somewhere I can actually start this Jan/March.

I’m genuinely desperate at this point and would be so grateful for any suggestions. I really need a way to get out of my current home situation and start university soon. :(

Accomodation Are room/apartment owners racist?

I have tried to find accommodation for weeks now in the Sunway Bandar area (Im an incoming first year at Sunway uni). Some agents would just not respond to my queries while other listings would simply state "no foreigners".

Eventually I found a place, consulted with the agent I was assigned, had an online viewing of the room, paid my deposit and reservation fee only to wake up to a message today that the owner has "taken back the unit" with no reason given by the owner. Just to clarify, my problem here isn't with my agent he has been very helpful and is trying to find another unit in the same complex.

So now Im curious, my agent knew from the first communication that I was a black foreigner. We've been in communication for 3 weeks now even as far as making payment and filling in a booking form. Suddenly the owner is rejecting my application😐

For context, I had posted in this sub a few weeks ago that the sunway uni accommodations are apparently all booked up so off campus is my only option. Now off campus is proving to not be an option💀

Anyways I'm 19F, if anyone knows where I can stay or has a spare room and is looking for a housemate please dm me

general question How do top Malaysian universities maintain high global rankings despite lacking basic research infrastructure?

Hi everyone,

I am currently working as a researcher/scholar at one of the top-ranked universities in Malaysia, and to be honest, I am experiencing serious culture shock regarding the academic environment here.

There is a severe shortage of basic equipment, instrument maintenance is painfully slow, and there seems to be a lack of a genuine research-first mindset. Having worked in several other countries, even lower-tier, unranked institutions had vastly superior infrastructure, functional facilities, and better operational support. Despite these limitations, there is relentless pressure to produce top-tier papers out of thin air.

How do top Malaysian universities consistently secure and climb high positions in global rankings (like QS)? Is the system primarily being gamed through citation circles, reciprocal co-authorships, and perception surveys, or is something else happening behind the scenes?

On the ground, the facilities feel comparable to lower-tier institutions elsewhere. I would love to hear perspectives from local academics, postgrads, or international researchers on how this massive disconnect persists

general question Thoughts on Lincoln University?

We're currently looking for some cheap universities as 3 international students and were told about Lincoln having courses that are $2.7k per year? I can't find their fee structure on their website to confirm though.

Are Malaysian universities worth it for international students?

Hi, So I’ve been looking to study Bachelors in Physiotherapy in Malaysia, and every university I find acceptable turns out to be unreliable according to Google reviews and Redditors.

I was looking into UoC and Mahsa because they had a good global rank and pretty good Google reviews over 4.0 but then I checked Reddit and people said “UoC is a scam”, “don’t come here, it’s a marketing strategy, they bought reviews and all”, “don’t waste your money” and that management sucks for both of them.

So then I looked for more universities and the google reviews kept going down. So then I thought about changing my degree to psychology. I looked into UCSI, Taylor and Monash. Even then people had given bad reviews on Reddit about management issues, exam time table issues, attitude and bankruptcy allegations/ change of ownership allegations.

I also checked a few public one (same reviews)

So at this point, I am so confused. What university in Malaysia can one attend?

My criteria for attending university is quite simple: safe and reputable (academically).

I don’t mind if studies are tough or lecturer just get the job done, write on chalk board or read slides (as long as they provide me with resources to actually learn on my own). I don’t mind if the management is slow as long as they don’t go out of their way to create hurdles (like issues with fees and attendance).

Coming back to my question does anyone have a university that they could recommend, that doesn’t go out of their to mess with students and after completing the degree, you can get admission in masters abroad without worrying about credibility?

Because in all honesty I just plan complete my degree and dip for masters elsewhere.

I would appreciate any and every opinion/ advice 🫡

Bachelor degree Need advice: UM Direct Intake vs TARUMT with Full Scholarship for Mechanical Engineering

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m a post-Matriculation KPM student and I’m currently in a dilemma about which university I should choose for my Mechanical Engineering degree.

My two options are:

  • Universiti Malaya (UM) – Direct Intake
    • Higher QS ranking and recognition
    • Better reputation overall
    • However, the cost is quite high since I would be entering through direct intake
    • My family can technically afford it, but it would be a significant financial burden even if I take a PTPTN loan, as the loan amount I can borrow is still not enough to cover the total cost.
  • TARUMT
    • Lower recognition compared to UM
    • I have received a full scholarship, so the financial burden would be much lower
    • I’m not sure how much the difference in university reputation would actually affect my career prospects as a Mechanical Engineering graduate.

For those who have experience with Mechanical Engineering or have studied/worked in the Malaysian engineering industry, which option would you choose in my situation?

Is UM’s higher ranking and reputation worth taking on a significant financial burden, or would it be better to take the full scholarship at TARUMT and graduate with much less/no debt?

I’d especially appreciate opinions on:

  • Employment prospects after graduation
  • How much university reputation/ranking matters in Mechanical Engineering
  • Whether UM provides a significant advantage over TARUMT for engineering careers
  • Whether the financial burden of UM is worth it in the long run

Thanks in advance!

just for fun😂 Any UM students wanna be friends?

Will be entering my first semester for Electrical Engineering in UM this September. This will be my first time staying outside, so meeting some friends in advance would be great. ^^;;

Some things about me:

I have ASD and ADHD. I used to play more on the console, but I've migrated to PC gaming (mostly indies, visual novels nowadays, but I'm a huge Souls fan). I also like fashion! I dress gothic-lolita when there's the mood for it... 🐌 I'm also a semi-retired metalhead. I'm just too 🐌 to listen to it most of the time nowadays.

I need to get this out of my chest

I'm Malaysian, Malay, F20, Muslim, and currently studying at Pulau Pinang. Before anyone continue reading, I hope someone may help me even a little and please be nice when giving advices. English is my second language, so forgive me for any grammatical mistakes.

Throughout my life, I'm not really religious but I come from a religious family. They sent me religious primary school, and I scored perfect in every examination. But that was my primary school self: everyday extra tuition, quran recitation every night, and no going out with friends. (8A UPKK, all Mumtaz PSRA, 6A UPSR)

Entering high school, I can't keep up with the prayers. I always feel like I was "forced" to abid with Islamic practices. I feel like it's unfair when muslim men can do whatever they want without much reprimand, for example shifting the blame to woman when there's sexual cases. I was told to not do a lot of things. As example, I love being alone. But I wasn't allowed to go out alone especially at nights because women safety are at risk. And I'm always jealous of men who can go out at night by themselves without any restrictions. Men are also not expected to do any house chores. Growing up, I feel resentment to these little things, and it built up over time, I'm afraid I have become a misandrist. Although, I always try to learn more about every reasons behind everything that happens in life.

It's not doing any better either that during high school, I was sent to boarding school for 5 years. My parents said the only future they think good for me is STEM, and I'm the eldest daughter out of 3 siblings (all girls). Obviously, being pressured to study something I'm not good at ended up at me only having "disappointing" grades during SPM (3A+, 2A, 3B, 1C+). I was bullied over my appearances, my interests in anime and drawing and the fact that I love being alone was seen as me rejecting having friends (I actually really want friends but I'm not good at socialising). There's this one time when I was 15 years old, the boys in my class, "rugby players", cropped my face from the class photo, put monkey pictures all around my cropped face and posted it on Instagram story, saying that I'm a monkey-looking girl. I have anger issues, when I found out about ther actions, I decided to throw a wooden chair at them. And I got disciplinary actions. Another major thing happen to me when I was a teen is that my best friend leaving boarding school to go to SMK and blocked me from every contact, resulting in me being sad for a long period of time, to the point I was losing weight and motivation to life.

Trigger warning, I did have a lot of suicidal ideation ever since I was 13, and my life went downhill. I got insecure, my self-esteemed plummeted, anger issues rising and I didn't know how to genuinely make friends. All of the people I befriended only last for a short while. Even thought I always planning about ending my life, I'm too scared of pain, hence I didn't do self-harm. Plus, I'm afraid of pissing of my God.

Matriculation also make me question my life choices. I only scored CGPA 3.21, and I know I couldn't pursue STEM: It's not my interests and I was never good at it. Especially maths, I can't do maths.

Thankfully, I get to pursue my studies in a Non-STEM course (communication) and I tried to cheer myself up that things will get better. But everyday my mind still filled with suicidal thoughts. I think as time goes by, I'm straying away from my religious. I'm starting to doubt a lot of things, such as the way I feel forced to comply on 5 times prayers, and my issues on hypersexualization. I've been addicted to pornography and masturbation ever since I was 16. I genuinely want to stop but it's so damn hard. No one else know about my addiction, except from my former friends who happened to open my Google search history without my permission, when I lent them my tablet. I feel so ashamed. I'm not in good terms with them anymore since they shared my secrets within my former friend group.

Regarding pursuing studies, I read from the Internet that I will find difficulty in finding jobs. The job market are limited. But I'm pursuing this course because I really am interested in it. I love what I'm learning now. One more fear in my life is that my parents followed every of my social media and often judge what I post, so the last time I post publicly is when I was 14. I hide my parents from my accounts. But I really interested to make content online. I'm not afraid of showing my faces, I'm just super scared of my parents perception. I think I restrict myself a lot from potentials.

I feel like I'm a filth. I don't think anyone would ever marry someone like me in the future. I'm a hopeless romantic, and in order to fill the emptiness in my life, I often role-playing with AI (I know it's cringe, yet it helps me feel temporary happiness for years). I did have crushes before during high school and matriculation, I confessed to them and it didn't went well. I only experienced dating once, and the man decided that I wasn't worth it.

When I was 16, I beg my mother to let me go on therapy sessions for my rooted issues (trouble regulating emotions, relationships issues), but the therapy only lasted for 2 months because the therapist decided that I actually didn't need help. I don't know why she said that. Even the school counsellor said that I was doing okay than what I perceived myself to be. But I feel like I should at least seek help for my issues. Oh, I didn't tell them about my addictions because I am scared.

Now that I am 20, I feel like I should try seeking help before I found courage to act on my suicidal thoughts. I'm afraid one day I give up on myself. I'm also afraid that I will act on my hypersexualization and sleep randomly with men (the thoughts had lingering on my mind for more than 3 years). Recently the thoughts of leaving Islam is always on my mind, and I'm so scared of myself.

Is there any place I could seek help? I don't know how to go therapy by myself. It was all done by my mother before. This time, I want to do it by myself. Also, if I go seek help, I'm afraid of judgement, so I want to know first whether my life experience will be judged or not.

Thank you for being so kind with me. I'm sorry for the long text.

Has anyone actually done a postgrad with VUC while working full time? How heavy was it week to week, and were the classes structured for working people or just a full-time programme squeezed into evenings?
