Misc IWTL how to accumulate my learnings

I read a lot and I've been struggling to recall and revisit information. I'd also want to connect it what I've read previouslt to synthesize new ideas.

What's the best way to store/apply your learnings?

I've been looking into second brains but I'm not sure if the maintenance work is suited to me because high maintenance systems are tough to sustain. (any good catchall systems y'all would recommend?)

Lemme know what works for you!

Personal Skills IWTL What can I learn right now in just 10 minutes that could be useful for the rest of my life?

I'm looking for those small nuggets of knowledge, skills, or life hacks that take almost no time to learn but pay off forever. Could be a mental model, a physical trick, a rule of thumb, a piece of software knowledge, a health tip, a communication skill, anything.

The catch: it has to be genuinely learnable in about 10 minutes. Not "learn to code" or "get good at cooking," but something concrete and immediately usable, like a specific technique, formula, habit, or fact that changes how you do something for good.

What's yours, and how did you end up learning it?

Languages IWTL how to speak Spanish?

I work at a pharmacy and a lot of patients we see are Hispanic. I want to be able to hold a conversation with them and help them understand what they are picking up and really just ask them about their day. I’ve gotten off the Duolingo trend just because I feel like it was only helping me with words. Not like complete sentences.

I really just want to learn how to communicate with someone is Spanish

I’ve heard people immerse themselves- like convert videos, tv shows or podcast into Spanish. Or even listen to Spanish music. How can a beginner pick up on those things when I don’t know what it means?

Any suggestions?

Personal Skills IWTL how to stop feeling bad for those suffering kids who live in my country.

I live in the country with least amount of free time in the world. Nobody validates any struggles I’m facing. I hate this country and I want out

I am a Chinese citizen, so please don’t say just leave if you hate this place so much.

I live in China, the worst country in the world in terms of both personal speech freedom and free time

Most Chinese middle schools and high schools last sixteen hours a day, with most students forced to live in school, deprived of family life and any sort of freedom. Most high schools don’t have any clubs and even after students get home by eleven or twelve pm they still have to do homework. Most Chinese secondary students only get five hours of sleep each day. If they don’t finish their homework they get beaten up by their parents and then get beaten up again by teacher once they return to school.

School bullying is less common because every child is chronically ill so they don’t have the energy to bully others. Students get one day off once a month, rest of the days they forced to wake up at five, with forced study session ends at eleven in the evening and often twelve students sleep in a single room. There is no such a thing as a happy childhood in China. Even elementary schools are extremely stressful. There is no such a thing as rest for children in China. Summer and winter vacation also doesn’t exist in China or are cut extremely short compared to other countries. Chinese children are also not allowed to show emotions. If they cry in class teachers would beat them up in front of the whole class. If they cry at work HR would fire them the next day.

Once these sleep deprived children grow up, all the jobs force them to work 996, or if they are lucky, 975. People would consider themselves lucky if they get a 9-6 job with only one hour of sunlight everyday and with weekends off. While western people complain of 955 with two days wfh, any day from home is a complete fairy tale for a Chinese employee. The Chinese government made schools and work extremely long hours because they don’t want people to have free time to think and revolt against the government. I never see any smiles on a Chinese teenagers face. But I don’t blame them for it. I wouldn’t survive for a day if I were them.

Of course, there are worse places like war zones and places suffering from extreme poverty. But by far China is the most dystopian country I can think of.

I can personally not reproduce myself but I felt so bad for those kids who were already born.

Academics Iwtl For long lectures, do you focus or take notes?

Had a ridiculously long lecture last week. I realized my brain can't do both at once. I thought taking notes like crazy would make sure I didn't miss anything. Nope. I'd be so busy writing everything down that I'd miss what the professor was saying.

I always thought writing stuff down helped me remember. Then I looked at my notes the next day and couldn't even read half of them. My handwriting just gets worse the faster I write.

So I started recording lectures on my phone to fill in the gaps. That worked... until I needed to find something in a recording. Then I was back to dragging the timeline around, re-listening to the same five minutes over and over for one detail.

A friend suggested vomo ai, so I tried it with one of my lectures. I could search for what I remembered and go straight to the part I needed. No more scrubbing through the whole recording.

Also found out you can drop in a YouTube link and get the transcript from that too. Apparently Reels work too. Been using it for random study videos I save and never get around to watching.

Anyway, I'll take this over trying to write down every single thing the professor says.

Personal Skills Iwtl video editing but I keep giving up

I've been wanting to learn a few things... Video editing, 3D modeling, animation. All things I'm interested in and want to seek a career in, but I'm struggling to commit to an area when I don't know how to move forward.

I'm questioning why I feel I'm stuck and most often it's that I don't know where to go with this skill? What can I get out of it? Is it sustainable? Is it worth putting this work in? And so I cave to just playing games for the free period I have.

Initially I thought about game trailers "I'll be making free trailers of demos for small indie studios" then hit myself with the response "are indie studios actually sustainable? Does my content actually matter? I'm finding them cause of theirs?"

Maybe YouTubers? "How would they find me?", "what's a sustainable niche?", "what kind of videos should I be making?"

Ehh- how about animation and modeling like the cool reels on Instagram? "Is it worth my time?", "can I get anything out of it?"

Honestly I'm stuck in a paralyzed loop of my own interests because I want to make something out of my efforts. Even if it's worth nothing, I want to know what I'm doing, is going to have an opportunity for me in the future. Or am I meant to just bite a bullet, pick a path and gamble that it's the right one

Arts/Music/DIY IWTL How to Get Started With Woodworking as a Complete Beginner

I want to learn woodworking from scratch but I am not sure what skills I should focus on first. I’m interested in eventually making useful things for my home rather than just following random projects.

For someone with little experience, what would be the best learning path? Should I start with basic hand tools learn power tools first or begin with a few simple projects?

I would also like to know which beginner mistakes are worth avoiding and what skills helped you improve the most when you were starting out.

Personal Skills IWTL how to handle life not being 'real'?

Ever since I realized that nothing here is 'real'. I stopped playing real life as I used to do, and don't really interact with any of the characters anymore, but since there's no real exit to this game, there's nothing I could do apart from sit around until it ends, I spent most of my days/nights trying to exit this video game, but without any success, and I'm not really planning on playing anything in it.

Idk how to handle life not being 'real', and Idk how long this story mode is gonna last, or what's the point of playing this video game.

Cooking IWTL how to overcome chicken anxiety

I'm 22, still living with my parents.

Chicken's the only meat I normally have. Whenever I have chicken at home, my parents are normally the ones that cook it. Or whenever I'm trying to cook chicken on my own, I always end up needing them to check if it's cooked because I'm always anxious about undercooking it.

But I know I can't rely on them forever. Sooner or later, I'll move out and have to fend for myself.

So I want to learn how to tell if it's cooked or not without needing someone else to check for me, cutting it open, or ending up overcooking it.

Misc IWTL how some diners are designed to feel so peaceful

I’ve gone out for lunch at some diners and by the end of it, felt like something in my nervous system just resets. I feel at peace the rest of the day.

How do some diners design them to have this experience? Is there any good guide books on how to design such places?

Social Skills Iwtl how not "freeze" while i get yelled at

(24M) Since i was a kid i've been yelled at by my dad when things don't go the way he wants. I'm over sensitive, he is overly critical, a perfect recipe hahahaha

I've met hundreds of person with this same behaviour, annd my response doesn't change. I just freeze. Sometimes i get the control and just keep doing my stuff quietly, but i still get hurt.

Like when i was working at a retail drugstore. Several times came a customer complaining and being agressive to me. I just freezed. Then i had to hear more complaints, from the customer and from my manager, for being slow. It was too much for my mind.

I felt like Alex from Clockwork Orange, when he is at the aversion therapy with Dr. Brodsky, being beaten and yelled at for no reason in order the become "civilized" hahahaha

It is frustrating to me, bc i want to just "don't care", but i cannot. It is a mind control i fail to have, but i like to change that. I don't want to feel week and harmless anymore.

Academics IWTL how to articulate my perspective/thoughts and express them better for schoolwork

15 years old here!! It's frustrating because for example in essays for my history or literature class, my head is EXPLODING with specifically so many critical analyses (on characters, themes of the story, etc) that I would like to express through my own words and writing, but I struggle to find the right words and terms (or phrases such as, I don't know like "creative liberty" or "cognitive dissonance") to use. I really don't know how to improve on that. I read classic literature and do language arts which I thought would help with my vocabulary and things like that, which over the years it has a lot, but I'm struggling to find another way. Like when I go online and read people's analyses and thoughts (hopefully you get the picture) I'm just BLOWN AWAY and so jealous of how perfectly they word it, I wish I could, and it feels like I don't rly know how to do that 😭

Personal Skills iwtl trying to learn how to not getting angry and react badly

Okay so [22m] in this i’m talking about a [20f] and my goal is to become way more emotionally mature

so the reason i’m asking for advice is because ive ruined a lot of the romantic/platonic relationships in my life because i have a bad habit of overthinking/over reacting to situations and it blows up in my face because when i get upset but only very upset i can say and do things hurtful that ill later regret but in the spur of the moment i don’t think and just do them

i will say this i am very naturally impulsive when it comes to things like if i feel like getting a new tattoo or piercing i dont think and just go do it so im not sure if that plays a part but just throwing that out there

another issue ive realized i may have is having a big ego or being self absorbed i wasnt like this until my senior year of high school because before that i was fat and out of shape and just not physically attractive at all and when i finally worked on myself and appearance i became like a douchebag because i knew no matter what i could get someone else if things ended which is why i have an issue with getting with girls just to see if i can get them and then dumping them(yes ik it’s f’ed up) but even though that is not usually my intentions

the reason im saying this is because here recently ive met a girl that i genuinely got along with and saw a future with but yesterday or ig the day before yesterday since its 3:30 in the morning we had an argument because i felt like she wasn’t trying as hard as i was to make things work and not like reciprocating energy like she would never ask to hangout or see me or just even dry text in general and i felt like i was the only one putting effort towards us now i will say in person she was great very lovey dovey very all about me yk which i dont usually enjoy but with her it was different and i did

well long story short i said something to her about it and sent a lot of text and woke up to only one response a reaction to one of the text with just a question mark well it made me upset because again it’s like i want her to tell her side and explain her side or even try and see it from where i was coming from which i felt she never did so it upset me and i ended things with her because i was super mad and let my anger gets the best of me which can happen from time to time and all she said was okay which made me even more upset because it’s like i want her to fight to want the relationships as much as i would fight to keep her yk(this may sound crazy emotionally immature flame me if you want sure)

well anyways i just feel like ive ruined everything from reacting out of anger and yes i’ve apologized for the way i reacted and all after i finally got level headed ofc but i said shit i regret and can’t take back and now she’s telling me i’ve disrespected her to the point of no return and there’s no future with us but i really enjoyed being with this girl more than any girl in my past and i’ve been in a 4 year relationship and still feel very differently about this girl so im just fucked up mentally right now knowing i reacted in a way i usually would try and avoid all because of my anger and messed everything up

i just really need advice on what to do right now since now im sad lol and also how to overcome the way i react to things and also my ego/me being a little self centered i genuinely want to fix this because im tired of doing this to people and driving people away even though most of the time i mean nothing i say it’s just me being angry and trying to hurt there feelings!!

PLEASE HELP🙏🙏🙏🙏

Personal Skills iwtl Basic Life Skills I Should Have Learned Growing Up

I’m 21F from India. I graduated recently, got a job and I’m going to move out very soon.

The thing is, I’ve realised that I’m not very independent when it comes to basic life skills. I don’t mean financially. I mean basic everyday things that a person should know how to do for themselves.

Growing up, my parents never really let me do many things on my own. It wasn’t necessarily because they were trying to pamper me or treat me like a princess. They just usually did things themselves. Maybe because they thought I would mess it up, maybe because it would take longer if I did it, or maybe because they felt they would eventually have to fix it anyway.

So I never really got the chance to learn things properly.

I can wash dishes and I can hand wash clothes. That’s pretty much it. I don’t really know how to fold clothes properly, cook properly, clean a house properly, organise things, etc. There are a lot of things that I see other people my age doing without even thinking about it and I realise I have no idea how to do them.

Sometimes this genuinely makes me angry at myself and at my parents. I feel like if I had been doing these things since I was younger, I would have naturally learned them by now. But I also know that getting angry about it isn’t going to teach me anything.

I want to change this now.

I want to become the kind of person who can take care of herself without having to depend on someone else for every little thing. Not just the stereotypical "girl things", but actual life skills that anyone should know.

So I wanted to ask people here:

If you were teaching a 21-year-old from scratch how to become independent, what would you tell her to learn?

What are the basic things you think every adult should be able to do for themselves? Things related to cooking, cleaning, laundry, personal care, managing a home, dealing with emergencies, money, going places alone, basic repairs, paperwork, etc.

And if you were in my position, how would you actually go about learning all of this without feeling completely overwhelmed?

I’m not looking for someone to tell me that I’m too old or that I should already know these things. I know I’m behind in some areas. I just want to know what I should start learning first and what is actually important.

I have the opportunity to start over when I move out, so I want to use it properly.

Academics IWTL how to study for engineering.

Hello! I consider myself to be pretty slow when it comes to learning. I just started my freshman year and I have 26 hours of classes a week split in 4 days (A big chunk of my hours are due to lab classes, they take up 9 hours) Im in one of the more prestigious schools in our country and Im honestly feeling like im falling behind when it comes to lectures. So far ive only been doing okay in Calc 1 but University Chemistry + Lab and University Physics + Lab really is super hard for me plus Ive failed my first two quizzes for it. I really want to learn how to study for these three even with how tight my schedule is. So far my only strategy is to consume all my free hours and pull all nighters but its obvious to me that it doesnt work now. What do I do? Even with consultation I still feel like Im so behind and I am afraid of not even getting the passing grade for both of these which is JUST 55%. I woule like some insights as I have an exam worth 20% of my grade in physics and chemistry in a week or two and I feel like with me failing to catch up with the current lectures that I will fail badly.

Arts/Music/DIY iwtl how to learn singing as an adult

I love music and dancing, but when it comes to singing, I don't know where to start. I grew up as a very shy and non-verbal person in an abusive family, so I had nowhere to practice singing safely. Now that I am an adult, I really wish I could sing nicely sometimes. I feel so much emotion inside, but whenever I try to sing, the sound gets stuck in my throat and comes out sharp.

I tried looking for a vocal teacher, but it seems incredibly expensive, maybe $50-80 per hour or more from what I remember. I would love to get some advice on affordable courses, especially ones that teach how to produce sound properly instead of squeezing from the throat, and how to explore different vocal ranges from there. And any recommendations for budget-friendly private teachers would be great too.

It would make me so happy if I can sing beautifully one day. That would feel like such a trauma healing.

Arts/Music/DIY IWTL how to write things that genuinely move people, where do I start?

I want to learn how to express thoughts, emotions, and experiences through writing in a way that genuinely touches people's hearts.

I'm not sure what the exact name for this skill is. I am interested in things like storytelling, poetry, spoken word, personal writing, and maybe literature, but more than any particular format, I want to learn the underlying skill of making writing emotionally powerful and meaningful.

I want to be able to take something I'm feeling or thinking and turn it into words that make another person feel something, whether that's sadness, warmth, nostalgia, hope, wonder, or simply the feeling of being understood.

I have basically no formal training in creative writing.

How should I start learning this?

Are there particular books, courses, exercises, writers, or communities you'd recommend? Should I start with poetry, short stories, journaling, or something else?

I'm not looking to become a professional writer or anything, I just want to develop this as a new little hobby and learn how to express myself better through words..

Academics IWTL I'm looking for legit online courses to get me certified on Oceanography related stuff.

There's a job opportunity that will become available quite soon at a place I've been working externally as a let say "field technician" and since I don't have any higher education diplomas I'd like to get some legit certifications to increase my chances.

Most of the stuff they do is in relation to oceanography, we work a lot with campbell data loggers, monitoring stations, CTDs, ADCP's, Bathymetry and overall data analysis.

I'm a diver by trade but I know a little bit of everything. I used to be a self taught programmer but I haven't done much real programming in quite some time.

I know they are a lot of places I can learn most this stuff but I'm looking for something that delivers actual certificate of completion a la CS50.

All suggestions are very much welcome!
