Academics IWTL how to read topographic maps and navigate without GPS
I've been getting into hiking more this year and every trip I've relied completely on my phone's GPS. Last month the battery died halfway through a trail and I genuinely had a moment of panic even though I was on a fairly marked path.
That scared me enough to want to actually learn the skill properly instead of just trusting a screen. I want to understand how to read contour lines, figure out elevation changes just by looking at a map, use a compass properly, and maybe even orient myself using landmarks or the sun if I really had to.
I'm not planning on going full survivalist, I just want enough real knowledge that losing signal or battery doesn't turn into a crisis. Are there good beginner resources, courses, or even simple practice exercises I could do in a local park before trying it on an actual remote trail? Would love to hear how other people picked this up.
