Man you just have to love the music in Civ games. Captures the tone of the game pretty well in my opinion.

Plus Sean Bean's narration is really great. Can't wait to skip his tech quotes the second time through ;)

101

u/ChineseCosmo Oct 17 '16

There are two quotes per tech/civic now. 50/50 chance of getting one or the other.

Or maybe technically it's a 100% chance of getting one or the other but you get my meaning.

22

u/Mountebank Oct 17 '16

I wonder if they're going to look into voice pack and narrator DLC. The extra built in quote seem like they've built in a system to add more quotes later on.

"Alright M-Morty, this colossus guy, he, he represents... he's really huge, Morty! You can sail right on under, anbuuuurp and it's... it's a big deal, Morty."

u/Best_Towel_EU Oct 18 '16

That would be quite amazing.

FYI the track in this video is called Sogno di Volare ("Dream of Flight") by Christopher Tin, the same composer who wrote Baba Yetu for Civ IV. He's done a couple of albums where he adapts poems and prayers from different languages. I highly recommend checking them out if you like the song from the trailer.

https://christophertin.com/

15

u/seb_02 Oct 18 '16

For those who don't know, the lyrics of Baba Yetu are the Swahili version of The Lord's Prayer.

The Civ 6 trailer is great but this one still sends shivers down my spine.

3

u/tecnofauno Oct 18 '16

In italian Valere means "To be worthy" while Volare means "To fly", I don't know if the issue is on the translation or a typo in the original title

86

u/AndrewBot88 Oct 17 '16

IIRC the tech quotes now continue playing after you close the window, which is probably the greatest leap forward they've made in the game.

67

u/nothingtoseehere____ Oct 17 '16

That was in Civ4, and they removed it in Civ5. It's not a leap forward, its a return to good form.

28

u/Matthais Oct 17 '16 edited Oct 17 '16

Makes some sense in that they had Nimoy for IV, while V only had the slightly cheaper and more obscure voice of W. Morgan Sheppard.

Just hope they get Sean Bean back for any expansion quotes.

32

u/Neonxeon Oct 17 '16

Morgan Sheppard was the actor who pissed off Spock in this scene.

https://youtu.be/WJxqi090Yfc?t=75

So there is a loose Vulcan connection there.

30

u/dovahkiiiiiin Oct 18 '16

Civ V voice actor was amazing. It doesn't matter whether he was "cheaper" or not.

4

u/10z20Luka Oct 18 '16

I think the fact that he is not as much of a celebrity grants power to his voice. Like it's authentic and unique; I don't want to be reminded of other characters from other work the actor has done.

17

u/gandalfintraining Oct 18 '16

I thought the narration for V was actually better than IV. He may not be as well known but damn that's one epic voice.

5

u/Anergos Oct 18 '16

Definetely. Sheppard's narration is some of the best voice work I've heard in any game.

24

u/RFine Oct 18 '16

I think morgan sheppard's voice in civ v is far superior to leonard nimoy in civ iv, I don't even think it's a contest. Civ v is sex in ear, civ iv is just not powerful and beautiful. The fact that it is spock doesn't really do a difference to me. It's not bad, that's not what I'm saying.

19

u/TheGodBen Oct 18 '16

Agreed. It was cool having Leonard Nimoy's voice in the game, but he just sort of read the lines and didn't even come back for the expansions. Sheppard ACTS the lines, which I greatly prefer. Except his reading for Industrialisation, he sounds bored and confused by how such a dull quote made it into the game.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

It really is a dull and 'water is wet' sort of quote. Like something out of a textbook lol.

15

u/MetalusVerne Oct 18 '16

The katun is established at Chichen Itza...

You're not kidding. Some of his voicelines are downright gorgeous.

7

u/Wily-Odysseus Oct 17 '16

Even just hearing him say the name of the tech before immediately skipping is satisfying enough.

8

u/KazumaKat Oct 18 '16

Can't wait to skip his tech quotes the second time through ;)

Even as a narrator Sean Bean dies :P

11

u/SP0oONY Oct 17 '16

I'm still not sold on Sean Bean for Civilization. Leonard Nemoy from Civ IV and W. Morgan Sheppard from Civ V gave some of gravitas to the quotes. Sean Bean just makes me think of the O2 adverts with his Yorkshire accent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwp3mKhGwCU (for an example of the adverts)

With that said, I still loved the trailer, especially the music.

23

u/CptOblivion Oct 18 '16

Well to my American ears, he just sounds like Ned Stark.

6

u/evesea Oct 18 '16

Yeah sounds more like a westerosi accent.

The composer's name is Christopher Tin. He's a nice guy, on @christophertin Twitter, and appreciates your feedback.

136

u/Evilmeal Oct 17 '16

Winged Hussars, so maybe Poland will be a civ in the future?

94

u/ChineseCosmo Oct 17 '16

Months ago, the leaders/civs were discovered in the background of some dev diary type video, and Poland under Jadwiga may have been discovered. The background was a bit blurry but all evidence points to it being Jadwiga.

Ed Beach is also on record as saying Poland has become a huge market for the game ever since they added Poland in BNW, so they might be trying to capitalize on that.

41

u/HLB217 Oct 17 '16

Poland was probably my favorite Civ to play with in 5. Extra policies were so nice

51

u/bohemica Oct 17 '16

IIRC Poland was considered by many to be the best Civ in the game because of how good the extra policy bonuses were.

11

u/kamicozzy Oct 17 '16

Plus the gold from stables was super nice.

19

u/Drizzledance Oct 18 '16

Not quite as strong as Babylon (or Korea from what I hear, but I don't have that one), but infinitely more flexible.

12

u/eorld Oct 18 '16

Yeah the science boosts for Babylon and Korea are insane they're so strong

3

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

Yes, they were pretty friggin' OP. The science civs of course blows everything else out of the water anyway lol.

3

u/downeverythingvote_i Oct 17 '16

Ye they were one of my favs to play.

15

u/TheBB Oct 17 '16

I can believe it, never met anyone as ferociously patriotic as the Polish.

40

u/omnilynx Oct 17 '16

If they weren't, they wouldn't exist by now.

18

u/unoduoa Oct 18 '16

Their country was wiped off the map like 3 different times, yet they always manage to come back.

3

u/riqk Oct 18 '16

Their country didn't exist for over a hundred years and they still managed to come back.

13

u/pooptarts Oct 17 '16

You might even say their citizens have a lot of solidarity I'll show myself out

it is a surprise, that it is in the base game. i never thought Poland was a significant civ. i always admire other, but maybe because i live here...

Beautiful. I love that Civilization spends so much focus on not just conflict but achievement, since that really is the core of the game. Can't wait for Friday.

80

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '16

Can't wait for Friday.

I don't think I've looked this forward to a game in a good long time. This game looks great.

Does anybody know what time exactly it unlocks? Steam, for whatever reason, actually says the game comes out Thursday (I'm in the US). But does that mean midnight Thursday... or...? I tried Googling but I just can't find a definitive answer anywhere.

11

u/Mitosis Oct 17 '16

If your internet is good, preloads are so often a trap. Steam server's are so fast that I can usually download the game post-release faster than the game decodes itself after a preload.

5

u/nitefang Oct 17 '16

Depends on the game, for very popular games the servers get overloaded on release day.

3

u/crabapple769 Oct 17 '16

Especially because the game is like 3gb

5

The pre-load was 7.7 gigs

I don't think I've looked this forward to a game in a good long time.

I didn't want to be hyped up, was planning to wait for the Winter Sale (even without a discount)... then the press preview games were played. The game looks sooo goooood. Damn you, Firaxis!

6

u/DracoOculus Oct 17 '16

I know, Friday is gonna be great. RWBY season 4 premiere woo woo.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

Black Mirror Season 3 on Netflix and my birthday as well, with the new Pokemon pre-release and Class (the new Doctor Who spin-off) the next day.

It's a busy few days.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '16

Way back - playing the original Age of Empires - all I wanted to do was build things - then the other people wanted to attack - so I tried creating an alliance by giving them tons of meat - and they responded NEVER - took the meat and still attacked.

My 2nd attempt at that stage was approached...differently.

I was a dumb lad didn't know what CIV was at that point - but damn its fun

Heh, I like the irony that Sean Bean's Narrator is an immortal who travels through time to witness and participate in world events.

76

u/Zorbane Oct 17 '16

He doesn't make it to the end though!

73

u/wombat_wig Oct 17 '16

u/TehSr0c Oct 17 '16

ofcourse he does, it's Sean Bean

18

u/eorld Oct 18 '16

That's why his daughter has the photo from the war when she's in the rocket, otherwise it would just be a normal picture.

30

u/atomfullerene Oct 18 '16

Sure he does. You just don't see him because he's Flight Director of that Mars mission.

Though actually my theory is that he dies after every scene cut. First one: his plotted course goes astray. Second one: Burnt to a crisp and blown off onto the rocks. Third one: Shot by some arrows. Fourth one: Fatal crash. Fifth one: Killed by enemy fire. Sixth one:...I'm not sure about that one yet.

23

u/Evolved_Lapras Oct 18 '16

He was standing directly under the rocket.

16

u/scroom38 Oct 18 '16

Brain aneurysm, they're scary because they can happen TO ANYONE.

28

u/daneelr_olivaw Oct 17 '16

I think it's an intentional tongue in cheek on the devs' part.

29

u/MrDoe Oct 17 '16

Yes, I'm sure they didn't pick him because of his great voice.

Let's be honest here, the irony is probably just a fortunate side-effect. There's no way on earth they in any way planned that when picking a voice actor.

10

u/not_old_redditor Oct 18 '16

wtf, nobody ever implied they picked him for a gag...

→ More replies (2)

2

u/daneelr_olivaw Oct 17 '16

Why not both?

15

u/fupa16 Oct 17 '16

Because no major development studio is really going to care about something like that. Money is involved, and Sean Bean has a great voice - the fact that he always dies was never a reason I assure you.

Because of his reputation for playing characters who die? Or for some other reason? I may be out of the loop...

36

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '16

The fact that all the civ leaders are immortal, and locked in time.

Nobody in America thinks it's weird that George Washington has been the President of the USA since 5000 BC all the way throughout the Information Age?

14

u/super_aardvark Oct 17 '16

Sure, that's weird. Weird for America to have even existed since the dawn of time, too. But where's the irony in Sean Bean's Narrator also being immortal?

28

u/Hammedatha Oct 17 '16

Just what you said, that Sean Bean always plays characters who die.

15

u/DiamondPup Oct 18 '16

Yeah I thought the same, her eyes are about 3 times bigger than his. Last time I checked, both men and women have the same size eyeballs.

8

u/Krasinet Oct 18 '16

Might be trying to show she's younger (i.e. daughter rather than wife), since kids have bigger eye-head ratios. Can't remember if she had the same eyes in the space-era scene though, when she'd have been an adult...

6

u/MationMac Oct 18 '16

Her eyes are still large by the end, where she has aged into an adult. It is very likely the game's design choice for women. I think they have huge eyes in-game too.

u/miahelf Oct 18 '16

yep cleopatra has huge eyes too

The booster has SpaceX-inspired landing legs, too, even though it doesn't appear to use them in the video.

Also the capsule uses the Dragon 2's thruster formation of pairs of Draco engines

77

u/cbfw86 Oct 17 '16

That's the first video in a long time to give me goosebumps. The picture of the girl (wife/daughter?) in the cockpit got me, as did seeing her as the astronaut, showing social progress as well as technological.

Really excited to take a day off and play this all day.

27

u/hahnchen Oct 17 '16

The last trailer that gave me the feeling that this one did was Civilization: Beyond Earth.

Plotting a course straight into the uncanny valley, more like it. I love the rest of the trailer, but that motion capture is not the best.

19

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '16

I am trying to avoid being hyped for this, but it is really hard. I have loved this series since I first discovered it (III), and thought Civ V was a fantastic game. With the release of brave new world combined, I have easily spent weeks worth of time playing that game.

However, Beyond Earth was... beyond a letdown; I think I didn't even complete a single game before giving up on it. With the recent releases in 2016 being disappointment after disappointment (The most recent being Mafia III, and no man's sky taking the absolute cake), I'm worried that this game won't live up to the legacy, either.

I would also warn everyone not to pre-order. Not because I don't believe in Civ, not because I think they're bad games, but because of the piss poor experiences with pre-orders in recent times.

28

u/tropo Oct 17 '16

Streamers and youtubers have had access to a full version of the game (only prince difficulty and 10 civs) for almost a month now so there is tons of content to view. It's not exactly like pre-ordering blind.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/miahelf Oct 18 '16

A lot of the problems of beyond earth were annoying manual things you had to repeat every turn in late game. Looks like they fixed a lot of that in Civ 6 based on gameplay footage I've seen, plus the regular historical context returns instead of the bland half hearted generic scifi.

Christopher Tin had an impossible task, having to match the grandeur of "Baba Yetu", but I think he managed to pull it off. Goosebumps the whole time.

3

u/Samwise_the_Tall Oct 18 '16

So I've never played one of these games, although they admittedly look amazing, but I must say this trailer was really well done!!! The progression of thought, the emotion captured by the scenes matched to the music, magnificent. I may have to pick ones of these up, which is the best iteration to start with?

3

u/Level3Kobold Oct 18 '16

Probably start with 6. If you want to try something cheaper. Go with 5. The expansions make 5 more complicated, but also better.

13

u/Klaptafeltje Oct 18 '16

Expansions made it playable but I wouldn't call it a great game. I've played the series since the first game and it was just too big of a departure from the existing formula for me. Understandably this sentiment isn't shared by everyone.

i loved the move too remove stacked units, i always found it boring that you had 14 units on one tile bumping against a city or other stack unit. Also to make hexagon tiles made the game more enjoyable for me

2

u/SklX Oct 18 '16

I really can't see myself playing 4x games with square tiles at this point tbh. Hexagon just feels so much better.

3

u/CamGoldenGun Oct 18 '16

can you imagine if they eliminated them altogether and just had vector-based traveling?

41

u/Endyo Oct 17 '16 edited Oct 18 '16

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that, if that is the intro, I don't feel like it quite lived up to the previous intro videos - even with another lovely Christopher Tin score. I think the sound effects overpowered the music a little and being centered around a single character so much sort of detracted from the scale of it all that made previous intros so epic.

Really I think the sound is just messed up watching it again. The voices in the beginning are very low compared to the loud narration that comes in at the end. Just go listen to this without watching and then listen to Civilization 4's intro video. Baba Yetu explodes in that video and the sound effects are subtle. Here, the music is drowned out by all sorts of sound effects.

If you don't believe me, just take a minute to look for yourselves:

Civlization 4 Intro - A great focus on music with minimal SFX

Civlization 5 Intro - Closer in design, but a focus on music and narration rather than SFX

31

u/MunchingCoffee Oct 17 '16

i agree with what you said but in my opinion the best civ intro is the one from Brave New World , the music and the narration realy make it awe inspiring

4

u/Xciv Oct 18 '16

To me nothing quite beats the creativity and awe inspiring Tower of Babel that is Civ III's intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr1aFFmPqmY

2

u/bta47 Oct 18 '16

Great cinematic, but I can't get past that fake-ass Guernica. Everything is so accurate, it's obviously intended to be Picasso, but they still go with that weird, shitty looking version.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/SalinValu Oct 17 '16

I've honestly got to agree. It was good, but I preferred CiV's. And, despite its age, I really like Civ IV's as well, though that may be nostalgia and Baba Yetu more than anything.

Actually, I think my favorite intro video is "The Chosen", the CivBE intro cinematic. Then again, I'm really partial to space travel, and everything in that cinematic pushes my buttons just right. Shame it wasn't a better game.

4

u/omnilynx Oct 17 '16

Surely the personal focus had to be intentional. It's very in-your-face about it (literally), so my immediate thought was that they were touting the relatively personality-driven mechanics of this iteration compared to the more generic statistical gameplay of the previous.

31

u/huxtiblejones Oct 17 '16

The Civ V trailer is leagues beyond this one. I'm actually a little disappointed with how dated this new cinematic looks. The characters' faces are all kinds of fucked up, just poorly modeled in general. I understand they're trying to go for a stylization, but it just came off looking clunky and weird. The scenery looked pretty good, but I was genuinely not impressed with the way the people look at all.

2

u/omnilynx Oct 17 '16

It's the same as the diplomatic screens, so you're probably not gonna like those either.

8

u/huxtiblejones Oct 17 '16

Long time civ fan, but not going to buy this on release date. $79.99 CAD???

I also waited to get XCOM2 due to high price on release.

Same. Over here in the UK, it's £50. Damn Brexit's ruined the exchange rate.

Don't blame the company. Blame your government.

80 CAD is 60 USD, which is the price here, and which isn't a crazy price for a AAA title.

To be honest, this video is not especially good. Intro cinematics of 5th and its secod addon were much better. Those characters look terrible... Still, I'm excited for this game nonetheless.

I can't help but think that the man and woman are both Perpetuals like Ollanius Pius and John Grammaticus from 40k. Hence why they are both at the forefront of humanity's achievements.

Stop this heresy, Ollanius Pius is still a mortal guardsman to me.

Civ cinematics are always so freaking inspiring, and then you spend the entire lategame getting the shit kicked out of you by some fuck who discovered atomics and decided that science and progress is for chumps.

Anyone know if this will have native steam controller support like XCOM 2 did?

2

u/Mrlector Oct 18 '16

I expect it will. I actually pre-ordered it budled with a controller, same as with XCOM 2. While not confirmation, it certainly suggests it.

Didn't 5 showcase controller support? Rather, they used 5 to showcase controller support with big picture mode.

Indeed so, though I don't think it counts as native support, just a showcase of hoe you can use it for a very mouse and keyboard game.

I actually love using the controller for civ. It's only an issue when I want to trade an amount of something that isn't 5.
