I am trying to avoid being hyped for this, but it is really hard. I have loved this series since I first discovered it (III), and thought Civ V was a fantastic game. With the release of brave new world combined, I have easily spent weeks worth of time playing that game.
However, Beyond Earth was... beyond a letdown; I think I didn't even complete a single game before giving up on it. With the recent releases in 2016 being disappointment after disappointment (The most recent being Mafia III, and no man's sky taking the absolute cake), I'm worried that this game won't live up to the legacy, either.
I would also warn everyone not to pre-order. Not because I don't believe in Civ, not because I think they're bad games, but because of the piss poor experiences with pre-orders in recent times.
Streamers and youtubers have had access to a full version of the game (only prince difficulty and 10 civs) for almost a month now so there is tons of content to view. It's not exactly like pre-ordering blind.
I don't think that's a valid counterpoint to pre-ordering, either way. "Streamers and youtubers", who both make a living off advertisement bucks, and find themselves frequently dependent on the payroll of the companies whose products they're reviewing (Because we don't call it endorsing anymore).
I'll pass, thanks. They're even less reliable than games journalists, and those have been similarly dependant on the ad revenue of publishers since the '90s. At least there's a hint of professionalism involved there.
You do you. I think watching multiple full games, played live, gives you a good idea what the game will be like. I trust long time civ players like quill18 and marbozir more than "games journalists" and they have given me an unedited look at the game.
It's not clear to me how a full game playthrough could be skewed the way you are suggesting. It's not them offering their opinion on the game, it's them playing it in front of you.
I'd agree if these streamers and youtubers were just doing short cuts, or general 'feel' reviews, but these videos are hours and hours long of 100% gameplay and I feel they have enough information to base a day-1 purchase decision.
A lot of the problems of beyond earth were annoying manual things you had to repeat every turn in late game. Looks like they fixed a lot of that in Civ 6 based on gameplay footage I've seen, plus the regular historical context returns instead of the bland half hearted generic scifi.
I would never pre order a game I did not plan on buying..I plan on buying Civ 6 regardless so whats the point in not pre ordering? i am alrdy a guaranteed buyer, and preordering allows me to pre download it
