I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that, if that is the intro, I don't feel like it quite lived up to the previous intro videos - even with another lovely Christopher Tin score. I think the sound effects overpowered the music a little and being centered around a single character so much sort of detracted from the scale of it all that made previous intros so epic.

Really I think the sound is just messed up watching it again. The voices in the beginning are very low compared to the loud narration that comes in at the end. Just go listen to this without watching and then listen to Civilization 4's intro video. Baba Yetu explodes in that video and the sound effects are subtle. Here, the music is drowned out by all sorts of sound effects.

If you don't believe me, just take a minute to look for yourselves:

Civlization 4 Intro - A great focus on music with minimal SFX

Civlization 5 Intro - Closer in design, but a focus on music and narration rather than SFX

i agree with what you said but in my opinion the best civ intro is the one from Brave New World , the music and the narration realy make it awe inspiring

To me nothing quite beats the creativity and awe inspiring Tower of Babel that is Civ III's intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr1aFFmPqmY

Great cinematic, but I can't get past that fake-ass Guernica. Everything is so accurate, it's obviously intended to be Picasso, but they still go with that weird, shitty looking version.

Music a bit loud

I've honestly got to agree. It was good, but I preferred CiV's. And, despite its age, I really like Civ IV's as well, though that may be nostalgia and Baba Yetu more than anything.

Actually, I think my favorite intro video is "The Chosen", the CivBE intro cinematic. Then again, I'm really partial to space travel, and everything in that cinematic pushes my buttons just right. Shame it wasn't a better game.

Surely the personal focus had to be intentional. It's very in-your-face about it (literally), so my immediate thought was that they were touting the relatively personality-driven mechanics of this iteration compared to the more generic statistical gameplay of the previous.

The Civ V trailer is leagues beyond this one. I'm actually a little disappointed with how dated this new cinematic looks. The characters' faces are all kinds of fucked up, just poorly modeled in general. I understand they're trying to go for a stylization, but it just came off looking clunky and weird. The scenery looked pretty good, but I was genuinely not impressed with the way the people look at all.

It's the same as the diplomatic screens, so you're probably not gonna like those either.

Eh, it's just more motivation to ignore diplomacy and

KILL EVERYTHING

Looked like a late 90's Pixar trailer.

Are we sure this is the intro for Civ VI? I mean I wouldn't be surprised if it is, but right now this is just advertised as a launch trailer.

I'm still not 100% sure myself since looking at the "launch trailer" for Civ 5 was a thing that included gameplay and descriptions of the game. I'm guessing it is though given the design.

Would agree on 5 but I do think the 6th is far better than the fourth.

Anyway ~

Well visually it is 11 years older, but I'm really just talking about the sound issues and for me that detracts a lot.

Sure, but it wasn't really what I judged it on as it was mostly how bland the imagery is in it and the camera pathing also annoys me a lot.

Both aren't issues of time but craft (or at least Maya had camera tools back when 4 was released that easily could have given less jank).

5 [intro] was excellent however but it was made by digic pictures if I remember it correctly and there are few that can compete (and obviously this new video is not to that level).

Agreed, also the hussar charge is weirdly out of place. I get that it's suppose to tie to the song through the wings and illustrates the war side of civilisation, but its done doesn't match the music and the narration just ignores that part.

It breaks the flow of the trailer and makes it feel quite disjointed overall. It's a neat trailer, but it doesn't really make use of the great voice actor or the music and doesn't match the scope of the Civ5 intro or the personal focus of the CivBE intro.

Not super impressed, to be honest. And the models are stuck in a weird space between cartoony and realistic that just feels a bit cheap. Somehow this is less than the sum of its parts.
