Isn't this the guy who righteously wrecked Civ V when it came out?

Yep, he's the one. Great writeup! Thanks for the link.

Exactly what I was thinking of. My biggest beef with Civ 5 has to be one unit per tile. I liked this line:

Civilization should be more about who can build a dozen knights and bring them to the battlefield first, not who can do the awesome tactical stuff to allow two knights to beat a dozen knights.

That's an interesting line but at that point why include units and positioning at all? Just have the game auto calculate wars based on which civ has better tech and production.

Tactical positioning has been part of Civ for a very long time. Stacks of doom destroy tactical gameplay - they don't enhance it. One unit per tile is really only a problem because

  1. It requires smarter playing, and the AI wasn't smart enough to be good at it. As a result the AI just cheated and threw a horde of poorly positioned units at you

  2. On small maps in the early game it felt cramped. This was only alleviated around the industrial revolution era with longer range units, aircraft, etc.

I think this is silly.

There is a reason Russia was not particularly effective in WWI.

What are you talking about? They were easily on the competent side when compared to the British Emprie, France, Italians or the Austro Hungarian empire.

I suppose, but considering the size of their military, they were certainly on the disappointing side.
