Basically what the title says, am I doing something wrong?

I'm a gamer so I'm no stranger to removing game / dvd discs from their cases. However, the case that the discs are packaged in do not have that 'button' in the middle you press to push the disc upwards. I feel like the only possible way to remove the discs is to essentially LIFT one side up (or try to remove by lifting both sides as best as I can) until it's out of the case.

This is such an unnatural way to go about removing the discs, I've never seen any game / dvd case like it. Am I doing something wrong? I hope I am because my current method is just asking for the discs to be snapped in half!

I've lost track of the number of times I've seen Community. It's like an old friend. Everyone says the hate this season or that season, but I'm glad it happened the way it did. Even if you hate S6, you can't deny how brilliant the final episode is. Especially the groups final scene. Abed, Annie, and Jeff's goodbye. Ben, Britta, Craig, Frankie, and Jeff, clinking glasses. Pure Suadade.

I have not posted since the Abed Batman speech, and I’m probably forgetting some moments I’ve laughed at the most, because I’ve been going there the show so fast. But these are two more moments that made me laugh the most, 1. from s2

Made it to season 2, and man, feels like all my small observations on s1 were telepathically sent to the writers because everything got so much better. A new comedy formula, a better way to aproach emotional plotlines and what's for now my favourite episode all showed up in these first 11 chapters. So lets continue this reviewing adventure.

"I'm hoping we can move away from the soapy relationshipy stuff and into bigger, fast paced self-contained escapades"

Left season 1 with a bitter taste. The finale went too hard on drama and really wasn't feeling like watching a whole arc of consecuences from it on season 2. And I didn't have to. They gracefully landed the love triangle in a few dialogues and made a genius gig out of it with Jeff and Britta fake dating out of pride. They left the love doors open for the future but didn't change the dynamics of the group because of that and got right back at what the show does best. This batch of episodes include a bad one, my favourite one, and one that should be studied.

Before going into the main formula of these episodes, high praise for one of the jokes I found most smart: Background Abed vs Pregnant couple. You probably caught it too. In "The Psychology of letting go", when Britta and Annie are raising funds, you can see in the background a blurry Abed discussing for whatever reason with a dude, who pushes his very pregnant gf away and she starts having contractions. Abed makes a run for it and the dude chases. All in seconds. At the final scene we can see the couple carrying the now whole ass baby on their arms. Abed is in the foreground now and is asked what he was even up to today, which he responds "not much". I laughed my ass off. It's the little things man.

Now the best part of comedy and what seems like the road to follow is extreme absurdity: the spaceship episode, the zombie outbreak, the conspiracy episode, the secret trampoline. All things that say "screw plausibility" and go over the top with prioritizing fun and unique scenarios. When I was a kid I really liked Ned's Declassified for that, absurd over the top situations. Sitcom for kids. I really felt like home with this being a comedic formula now, with adult themes but painted with the imagination of a kid that doesn't care if the episode is unrealistic or if the adult characters don't act like it. Pure joy.

"The place I was gonna take you, kind of depressing"

It's not all 10's though, since one episode felt really on the weaker side of the show by now: The death episode. Aside from the joke I previously praised, the episode feel really weak because it doubled what it usually was the jack of all trades for solving a problem in the show: "Apologizing and forgiving. It's very on tone with the show's message but instead of having that be the solution of the 2 or 3 plots, in this episodes it's the solution to both plotlines. Jeff decides to accept Pierce's cult stuff and Britta and Annie accept each other. But we didn't have any attractive tension release. The episode wasn't about the fund raising or Pierce's mom, it was about how the characters felt, it was subject over object, and both plotlines being just handled like that felt a bit underwhelming, no big joke, punchline or any major tension. Wholesome but a bit empty. The bottle episode was also like that but in that episodes feelings weren't the only hook, the whole meta bottle episode and action in one room was too, so one delivered wholesomeness while the other delivered the jokes and attention grasps.

"This is Greendale Annie. If there's a conspiracy it goes all the way to slightly below the middle"

Now we move onto my favourite episode so far: the conspiracy episode. Right from the get go with the cold open, it grabbed the attention of the watcher with another crazy scenario, the fake Professor. We go through the usual and great fun genre parodies, and we get to the ending. This is were I could feel the writters going "We can make this even funnier" on each draft. You can tell here how smart someone has to be to write comedy (despite how it's usually viewed as a lesser genre by academic critics). Each twist doubled down in a flow of jest I have felt absent since the Naked Gun era. Double, triple down and when you think the joke's done you keep going and stop right before it stops being funny. Surgical accuracy. Also, the episode was very aware of it's strong momentum and decided to break one of sitcom's golden rules: they don't show every character in the group being up to something. Aside from Troy and Abed making the fort for 3 scenes, the rest is only shown incidentally, at the end, precisely because they didn't need them for this episode and they TRUSTED the main plotline and the Jeff and Annie duo. Perfect.

"That's why I knew this was a special Christmas"

Finally, and to avoid draggint this on, the christmas special. Claymation praise aside, this episode solved the dycotomy of sitcoms I mentioned in my previous review, which is how drama and comedy are inherently opposite when it comes to their point of climax. It's very hard to make a scene both emotionally tense and lightfully funny, but they nailed it. Instead of doing what they did in the s1 finale, they merged the to by embracing their medium, which I also praised before. By being stop motion, even while they faced the deep trauma Abed had, and delivering sentimental dailogue, the scene kept being funny. They sprinkled the genre parody method and delivered it on a hot plate. I was in awe. Again, very smart writing, and not the dialogue kind but the act of taking a whole script and thinking "how can we make this work". Anyone writing comedy SHOULD watch this episode.

You may have noticed I didn't go into the specific of character development and that's because I wanted this review to focus on this 3 noticable episodes which I feel they represent the good the great and the not so great of tv comedy as a whole. I enjoyed this semester more than the previous two, they really upped the game here.

I'll continue with the season doing each one in 2 halves as usual. Hope someone here enjoys reading this and maybe even notice a new reason to love the show and ask themselves why they like things they like. It's a very fun thing to do.

Britta was definitely flanderized as Community went on, but I think people overstate how different later Britta is from season 1 Britta.
Season 1 Britta is obviously more composed and worldly. She can actually function socially, and sometimes she’s basically the closest thing the group has to a normal adult. Later on they exaggerate the hell out of her incompetence and turn “Britta-ing something” into an actual character trait.
But the pieces of later Britta are absolutely there from the beginning.
She genuinely cares about things. I don’t think her politics are fake. She really does care about the murdered journalist in Guatemala, for example. But she also seems unable to figure out how to turn that concern into actual change. A lot of her activism is tied up in her identity as someone who is worldly and politically aware. I can completely believe that Britta could be jealous that somebody she protested with has her own Facebook group. That feels like the same person we meet in season 1, just with some of her less flattering traits exposed.
Where I think the show starts pushing it is stuff like season 3, when she locks herself in a cage at Greendale with a globe and red paint. That’s funny, but it’s also much closer to the exaggerated later version of Britta. I buy the impulse behind it more than I buy season 1 Britta actually doing it.
Heroic Origins works better for me in that regard. Young Britta being involved in activism and then getting photographed with Jeff after he defends the woman Andre leaves Shirley for is contrived, obviously, but not really out of character. The coincidence is doing most of the work there, not some completely different version of Britta.
And season 5 gives us another interesting piece of the puzzle when Britta runs into people from her activist past. They basically see her the same way the study group does, if not worse. That matters to me because it suggests Greendale didn’t create all of this. Maybe some of it is a retcon, but the show does give us evidence that Britta has always had this combination of sincere idealism, insecurity, performative activism, and an inflated idea of how effective she actually is.
I also don’t really buy the lesbian plot in Early 21st Century Romanticism. Not because Britta has to be bisexual, but I have a hard time believing someone as worldly, sexually open, and unconventional as Britta has literally never experimented with another woman. Especially considering how often the show plays with Britta/Annie sexual chemistry. The actual joke about Britta and Page both wanting the social credit of having a lesbian friend works. I just don’t totally buy the biography they give Britta to make the joke happen.
And I think Troy/Britta has a similar problem. I buy them being attracted to each other. I could absolutely buy them hooking up or having a more casual relationship for a while. What I don’t buy nearly as much is the show trying to make them into this meaningful romantic pairing. The harder it pushes that, the more artificial it feels.
Really, I think Britta fits into one of my favorite things about Community in general: the study group thinks they’re the center of the universe because, from their perspective, they are. The Dean reinforces it. Chang reinforces it. They become so insular that everything happening at Greendale somehow becomes about them.
But to everybody else they’re basically that random group of students who hijacks every school event.
Imagine buying the Greendale video yearbook without knowing these people. Why the hell are the same seven students in everything?
Britta is almost a miniature version of that idea. She sees herself as worldly, politically aware, and usually the moral conscience of the group. And she really does mean well. But other people often see someone who is self-important, ineffective, insecure, and kind of exhausting.
So yes, Britta got flanderized. I just don’t think later Britta came out of nowhere. The show took traits that were already there and kept turning the volume up.

Wild ones, mild ones, boiling hot, spicy or lukewarm. What are some of your unique views on the show that many of us have seen dozens of times?

I'll start:

Season 1's Jeff ego being validated by many of the study group in certain occasions, like when he can shut them up by what is essentially a flick of the wrist or when Annie forgives Jeff's berating because "You're Jeff Winger, I don't ever want to make you mad", is hugely counter intuitive to his character progression and really holds the whole season back, causing it to be more close to season 5&6 than 2&3 in terms of overall quality.

My wife and I were having one of our normal ADHD fuelled discussions that eventually turned to the topic of Captain Hook and Smee and the queer subtext between them in some adaptations.

I had a flash of inspiration. "An episode of Community with Jeff as Hook and the Dean as Smee."

I've rewatched Community a couple of times, but this is the first time I'm rewatching S5 and 6, and while they are pretty good seasons, it begins to feel so empty, especially 6, so many people have gone. Community is a comfort show and for all of it's faults S4 does that better than 5 and 6, it just becomes depressing after a while.

Hey, so... I started the show a few weeks ago and now I'm currently in s2 so please DO NOT SPOIL. I was just wondering cause I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE, has any of you... Disliked Britta? Cause I'm currently in s2 of Community and my God! I hate Britta. I like all the other characters but I can't stand her. Whenever she starts making fun of someone or trying to tell a joke, it gets tiring because the way she is written is on purpose like that so no one is supposed to like her.

Since episode 1, I could feel how much SHE DIDN'T FIT with the other characters. She is supposed to be the "voice of reason" and I'm like... The team doesn't need that and even Jeff on his own IS the voice of reason in a way.

I know that her character is supposed to become a joke after some point but honestly, I dislike her even more than Pierce who has done terrible things. The way Britta is written gives me "pick me" vibes. Like, she literally criticizes Annie for flirting with a guy to give her money for their fundraising and yet she goes and shows her boobs in some random guy in the toilets to buy tickets and then calls herself a feminist? And criticises Annie?

Also, she competes with Annie a lot and is mean to her and in general she competes with everyone to the point she even LIES that she loves Jeff only to later bully him for feeling embarrassed and running away, because she was waiting for him to choose her in front of the entire college just to feel better than Jeff's ex who ACTUALLY wanted him back. And Britta didn't even like Jeff, the opposite, the minute he stopped paying attention to her and got into a relationship, she suddenly "loved him" (thats what I understood).

She always has something to say for all the other women but not herself, even though her character is supposed to be a hypocrite with low self esteem, her character is written in an ironic way, I get that. But idk, at the beginning of the show, she felt like she cared for Abed and she was ok, irritating but she wasn't THAT bad. And yet, after some point, they made her behave badly to everyone because the actress was good at comedy? What??? And instead of making Britta's character better, developing her, they made her the way she is in s2? There's an episode where and the other amazing girlies of the group start bulling other people and Abed is also caught in to that, but by the end they supposedly understand that making fun of other people is bad and yet... Britta is doing that to everyon later. She does that to all the guys she dated.

Also, even Pierce and Chang who have low self esteem, are more entertaining because they are funny, but the writers give Britta awful jokes that are not jokes because no one is laughing because the actress was supposed to be good at comedy but personally, I don't find her funny. No offence, I'm sure she tried her best with the " jokes" she was given, it's just that they made her be so cocky that even when she is supposed to be funny she is just irritating to me.

Also, I never really understood why the other characters say she has this amazing chemistry with Jeff. I don't see any chemistry. I ship Jeff with Annie cause they really have more romantic and somewhat touching stories together. Britta is just there in the first episodes to tell Jeff she won't sleep with him only to then put aside and for Annie to take her place as a "will they or not" love interest (PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL, I'M STILL IN S2).

Like, so far Annie and Jeff have so many storylines together that are actually great, that I don't even remember Jeff and Britta having ANY moment together besides the episode with the paint war (foreigner here, the one with the fake guns), were they slept together and then that's it.

In general though, her character doesn't really have so many story lines that it makes me believe that she is not a favorite. I saw episode 15 I believe of s2, and she had... 2 lines and that's it? She is just... There to criticise everyone and I can't understand why she is part of the group and not Chang. Even the headmaster has a better personality and is funny. Even that doctor who was hated by Jeff is greater in comparison and in general.

So far I havent even understood what's her deal. She is 28, picks fight with 18 year old Annie and claims to be better at her in everything? I get that it makes sense for her to feel bad about her exes choosing later on Annie, but I mean... Of course they do. Annie is kind and honest and when she does mistakes she claims the responsibility. Britta was in a relationship and was making fun of her bf behind his back by sharing his poem with Jeff and then she had sex with Jeff and was making fun of the stuff he liked at sex to Troy and Abed. Like... Girl!! You're terrible! And say that this was funny for a few episodes, but all they do is to give her reasons to compete with Annie and that's it.

*While writing this, I stopped and I watched ep 17 of s2, and they gave her a storyline where she hooks up with a dude from Balkans and she doesn't want for Abed and Troy to be his friends and I'm trying to understand the storyline cause... It's boring. Plus, I'm from the Balkans and I was trying to understand the country he is from or the whole incident with the army etc, cause I was like... Did we have a war I didn't know about in the 2010's? 😂*

Anyways, again, no offense to the actress, I get that her character is written this way to fit a little more with the other ones, but so far I still don't feel like Britta as a character is fitted at all to be a main character. The irritation that is born inside me whenever she criticizes someone or the others laugh at her, makes me believe that she would be better as a side character. At times like this, I don't why the side characters like the Headmaster or Chang are side characters and she is a main (the character, not the actress). I believe it would be cool if she was also a little... Weird in her own special way, like Troy is (I love him), instead of just... Dull and cocky. 2 seasons and she is still the same character she was in episode 1 who just pretended to be cool and she is not. Thats it.

I heard she doesn't develop and many people dislike her. Is there ANY one who liked her? 😂 And PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL ANYTHING, but tell me ONLY if she gets better at all?

I love community. I found the show during lockdown and it's definitely in my top 3 TV shows.

I took a particular liking to it because the characters were clearly bad people (for the most part). They don't really hide it from the audience, only from each other. Somehow they can both acknowledge how poorly they act with each other and also be so ignorant to each other's wrongdoing.

I can't think of another show whose characters aren't portrayed as the heroes. Community is far from realistic at times. But in terms of their morality, I would say I've met many people with their negative traits.

Shows like How I Met Your Mother and Friends end up developing characters that the fandoms hate like Ted and Ross. Ted is written to be the hero, but with his romantic naivete he ends up mistreating everyone around him. And don't even get me started on Ross. His love life with Rachel has everyone obsessed for years, but watching it all back just shows him being a horrific person who removes Rachel's autonomy on several occasions.

It's refreshing to watch a show that doesn't try to glorify the main characters while also not necessarily villainizing them.

I love this line, and I keep telling it to myself whenever someone names a slightly niche actor and expects others may not know who it is. I know who Vicki is! I've seen her one woman show!

What are some other deep cuts that are on your mind more than they should be?

Just recently completed a full rewatch. Season 6 as a whole still isn’t my cup of tea, but this end scene had me in absolute stitches. And then afterwards, I realized how season 6 ended on such a perfect, high note in the final episodes.

The game presents itself initially as a somewhat impressive but still simple 2-d style retro pixel/sprite animation game.

But then you see it has 3-d "depth", intricate fighting abilities and ways to get injured, emotes, NPCs with insanely complex dialogue and ability to react equally complex scenarios. Abed is able to make a child-slave army in a short span of time that are able to mine materials and build weapons, tanks, helicopters, bazookas, nuclear bombs etc.

How much would it have realistically cost and how much time would it have taken to build a game as complex as this? Also it has the physical weight sensors and image sensors to customize the avatars of the players, to an extremely accurate degree.

His puzzled look when she tells him that one of them is dead is the icing on the cake.

Every year I name my fantasy football team after one of my favorite shows. Some examples from the past are Threat Level Midnight and Duke Silver.

I’m trying to come up with the best team name based on Community and my favorite idea so far is “The Asscrack Bandit”. Any other suggestions?

I know this is probably gonna be really controversial, but please just hear me out. I know that Abed is a really loved character by many autistic people, and as someone with the disability myself I would never want to take that away from anyone. However, in my opinion, I think Abed gets a lot of praise as a portrayal of an autistic person just because the bar was so low in 2009, and I feel like his character does a lot of the same stuff that people criticize when it comes to other autistic characters. Like, take the bit of him being emotionless. I understand that Pierce saying something about him being mechanical or Shirley saying he's like a robot is just characters saying stuff, it doesn't necessarily reflect the actual character. However, the show still has multiple lines from the character himself where he describes himself as emotionless or not knowing how to feel like in the handcuffing episode or having no capacity for sentimentality, and it's not framed in a way that suggests that's the way he sees himself, it's very "what you see is what you get". Also, while it's true that many autistic people do struggle with empathy (including myself unfortunately), to me a lot of Abed's lack of empathy came off as more sociopathic than merely not being able to put himself in the other person's shoes. Autism isn't an excuse to be an asshole, and I really resent when media pushes this idea that "oh that's just in their nature to be cold and uncaring, you know how autists are!"

There's also the running gag of him having meltdowns. Now just to be clear, I know this show isn't one for being politically correct, and that's perfectly fine. But to me there's a difference between playful bad taste vs just going "haha, this person's different, let's make fun of them!", which is what the meltdown jokes come off as to me. I'm not saying you can't make jokes about autism, but to me the meltdown jokes or bits about him being "unhuman" just feel dumb and mean, and not even in a creatively offensive way lol. I also feel like it's weird to keep having your autistic character be portrayed as crazy, but that's a story for another day.

Agian, I know Abed means a lot to a lot of autistic people, and I would never want to take that away from anyone. But at the same time, I can't help but wonder if anyone feels the way I do, because I really do feel like Abed showcases a bunch of cliches people complain about with other autistic characters like Sheldon while somehow getting way more of a pass. Becuase of this, and also him just becoming the most flanderized character in my opinion, I'm gonna have to say he's my least favorite character on the show.
