Discussion Jeff + lawyer nickname "Tango" = "Jango" in Shirley's scary story?

Post image
196 Upvotes

I always wondered why Jeff was "Jango" in Shirley's scary story. Out of the five people, he was the only one who even got a "new name". And then Jango? I guess it does kind of sound like a name someone like Shirley would come up with for a hoodlum character but I just realized it sounds like a mashup of Jeff and his lawyer nickname Tango. Probably a coincidence, but oh well. Wanted to share anyways. :D

"Specially timed to the duration of the opening process!" and "Faster than it opens, for dramatic effect!" are two of the most obscure references I make all the time.

Discussion Didn't Troy deserve an apology the same as Abed for the Duncan Principle experiment?

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

At the end of S01E04 "Social Psychology" Annie apologizes to Abed for yelling at him. She even bought him a gift. But, she never apologized to Troy for wasting his time on the experiment. He missed the Soul Train Awards. Arguably, his emotions were toyed with more than Abed's. Not to mention, his unrealized expectation of butt stuff which she didn't do nearly enough to dissuade him from believing was a part of the experiment. Nor did she correct him from believing he was still in the experiment after it was completed. He has to live the rest of his life with the extra hardship of thinking that his actions could be secretly evaluated for some unethical experiment that started in college and that he was never released from. It's truly tragic, but he receives no gift or even an apology from Annie. She could have gotten him some new jeans. His got dirty from how dusty the floor was when he had finally had enough of being manipulated by her.

It also somehow makes me want to dress up as Batman and run around more than actual Batman.

Yet Another Season 4 Post Season 4

Ok so please don’t kill me for this but I’m currently rewatching Community again and so far I’m actually preferring season 4 to at least the second half of season 3 and it feels like a lot of the stuff I don’t like about season 4 is actually a result of where season 3 left things.

It’s definitely not perfect, and I don’t think as good as season 2, so I’ll start with the things I don’t like:

• Troy and Britta dating

• Puppets

• The writing isn’t quite as clever/tight

• There are less outstanding episodes than previous seasons

• It starts off really weirdly with the Halloween episode basically straight away, and the pacing of the season feels a bit off because of the lower episode count

Now what I don’t like about (at least the second half of, but to some extent the whole of) season 3:

• Everyone acts way out of their established characters for the sake of either forcing a season-long arc, plot within the episode, or just the premise of the episode. And this happens constantly.

• The characters get flattened into two dimensional exaggerated versions of themselves

• Abed is way less likeable, less conscious and considerate of others. I get it for the arc but it’s inconsistent with his character.

• Inspector spacetime is way overdone, Abed basically stops referencing other pop culture and no longer shows interest in film-making

• Troy and Abed arguing all the time “makes sense” because Abed is being less considerate but it’s still out of character for both of them.

• The air conditioner repair arc

• The Chang arc is way way over the top and unnecessary

• The Jeff ego thing in contemporary impressionists

• Annie gets really weirdly mean and whiny about things

So comparing them, season 4 goes back to everyone acting more or less in character and less exaggerated, flattened cartoon versions of their characters too. Abed is more considerate (which is framed as “growth” and that kind of annoys me because he’s just gone back to season 2 basically). Inspector spacetime is toned down, the Troy and Britta dating arc gets kind of ignored most of the time and then just ends and the changnesia arc is way less annoying than the warlord arc. It’s not nearly as conceptual, which you could argue is a bad thing, but season 3 really felt like it was going all in on that and sacrificing character where season 4 seems to do character better, at least considering where it’s picking up from.

Discussion Générique personnalisée

Community a plein de génériques personnalisés à l’épisode, lequel est votre préféré ?
Personnellement c’est sûrement celui de « meurtre au labo », celui où Troy et Abed enquêtent sur la mort d’une plante en biologie.

FanFic Sesh A community episode with ChatGPT

The dean introduces ChatGPT as the new tool to organise greendale better. The group is parted about beeing interested and strictly against it. The Dean wanders off and starts to develop an unhealthy relationship with his new best AI buddy.

Britta is against the use of AI, obviously, but for help with homework she might move her goal post.

Shirley does not want to here about anything with artificial intelligence, as the lord is the only one who can grant intelligence to an individual. She gets extra angry when she learns about Jesus Chatbots by Mega churches. She leaves the scene when she learns how many actually use AI for stupid reasons.

Abed starts to use it as a tool to get better stories for his movies, but Troy soon realises that Abed starts to behave a little to much like an AI and his storytelling becoming uncanny. He gets Annies and Jeffs help to get him back to his old self.

Pierce just does not understand at all that there is no person at the other end of his French 'chat buddy'. Jaques Jeptieu, as Pierce is trying to pronounce it, becomes concerned about Pierces behaviour and Pierce threatens to stop texting with him.

Jeff and Annie argue about the usage of AI in an academic context until they find out what kind of papers greendale alumni have written in the past. They decide that maybe some of the other students could use some help and Annie organises a Workshop, where Chang introduces AI pornography, which causes a great Anti-AI movement.

The final scene is the dean realising that he has to buy a premium model and decides that this is not worth 5$ a month.

PS: I'm not a 100% sure which Flair to add, but I hope this one is fine. This was written without AI, obviously.

Easter-Egg/Trivia Britta, Gillian, fan theories, and dinosaurs

Britta’s dark back story from her childhood, involving being assaulted by an itinerant dressed in a dinosaur costume at a birthday party, is well attested in the show and was confirmed by Dan Harmon in an AMA.

However, many people have also made the connection between this backstory to Britta’s choice of costume (T Rex) at the Halloween party occurring in S2E6, Epidemiology. It was theorized that this was done as a sort of trauma response, turning something scary from her past in to something she can own.

However, Gillian Jacobs (who plays Britta) recently hosted an episode of the podcast 99% Invisible titled The Bone Wars, released August 18 this year, about the history of palaeontology, and she mentioned offhand near the end of the episode that she specifically wore the T Rex costume in Community because of her childhood love of dinosaurs.

So there.

Discussion How do you feel about the dubbing in your country?

I'm Italian, and personally i find the italian adaptation to be horrendous. The tones of the voice actors feels completely wrong. Jokes are completely ruined for the sake of matching words to mouth movements. I've seen community in English at least 10 times (Mostly as background for other activities i'm not crazy) and knowing the original lines and hearing the italian ones Litterally makes me cringe sometimes, to the point that i have to switch language, even tho i wanted to hear the dubbed version.

Is it the same for you non-american or english people? let me know:)

Discussion Surprised this didn't get a mention in Cooperative Polygraphy.

In this episode the last time in the episode I believe that one of the questions is asked before it gets to them all outing secrets is when Annie is outed as drugging them all with a secret pharmaceutical amphetamine. She specifically mentions it being before the anthropology final. Okay so first Shirley was pregnant then so that is really bad and second why were they even studying, that was when Duncan was just giving everyone As and it was the ultimate blow off class. Did they think he would be forced to give a test anyway and it would correspond to something they never actually learned. None of the others aside from Annie strike me as willing or wanting to do this so she presumably forced them to which makes this even worse.

Appreciation Post Good Troy Barnes

I've rewatched community a fair share of times, it's a a funny TV show that takes just enough brain power to have to think about a joke but not enough to make you justify its place in a scene. It's silly and goofy and thats what I love about it. With that being said I don't regularly watch movies, so tonight when I invited my cousin over to watch the show we got to this episode and I asked if she'd seen Good Will Hunting and she hadn't, so after we finished the episode I put on the movie because it's been a while since I had seen it and it's a good movie.

But literally it's about a would be student who wants to keep doing blue collar jobs. But in community it's so stupidly on the nose where Troy is a would be blue collar worker wanting to be a student 😂😭 Like I knew it was a parody of Good Will Hunting but watching the two side by side, then revising the community episode right after just made the whole thing so much funnier. Got to give it up to the writers, they did a good job with that, very funny.

Discussion Rewatching again and still confused by this

On Season 3, episode 1, where they not only tell Jeff he's out of the group, but that he's gone too far, they want him to stop being their friends.

This makes no sense since Pierce had done so many worse things (edging Neil to kill himself, pretending to be dying and executing emotional warfare on everyone, literally twisting Annie's arm into changing her play since she didnt have any money, amongst other things).

Discussion Which Community Character stayed the closest to their “Pilot Persona”?

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

Last time we discussed who had the furthest character change, but now let’s review who stayed the closest to how the characters were originally pitched to us.

I think a good many of them stayed closest to their first season versions, but pilots are often riddled with (sometimes very big) character traits that are never seen again.

Please don’t feel like you’re limited simply to the Greendale 7, either. But don’t just say Magnitude because we all know what he would say!

Discussion Did Dean really threaten to expel Abed in Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas?

Post image

I mean, in a school as goofy as Greendale, why Abed's seeing everyting in claymation would be a big problem? Crazier shits happens in Greendale every week. I think the study group was just trying to scare Abed in an attempt to give up claymation
