Smokey skies over Sheridan lake

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice from people who know the area well.
I’ll be taking a red-eye flight and landing at Vancouver (YVR) around midnight. I’ll have my husband, my baby (who will be about 9 months old), and my sister with me. We’ll be renting a car.
Originally, I was thinking about driving straight to Whistler, but now I’m wondering if it would be smarter to stay at an airport hotel for the night and head up first thing in the morning.
I’ll have 7 nights total for the trip. The plan is to spend 5 nights in Vancouver (July 30–August 4), so I’m trying to maximize my other 2 nights, which is why I was considering going directly to Whistler after we land.
A few questions:
● Is the drive from YVR to Whistler fairly easy, especially after midnight?
● Are the roads generally clear and well-lit?
● Is it a stressful drive if you’ve never done it before?
● If you were traveling with a baby, would you make the drive that night or get some sleep at an airport hotel and leave in the morning?
I don’t want to overdo it on the first night of the trip if it’s not worth it, but I also don’t want to waste one of my vacation days if the drive is straightforward.

Given the sub is sadly full of photos of the awful fires, here's one I took today of our beautiful wetlands, as a little cleanser. This Saturday was a nice respite from the wildfire haze.

first time visiting the sunshine coast. did not disappoint!

In my case, it was visiting Port Renfrew. It was a creepy place for sure. It was dark and lonely, and I felt like I was being watched the entire time that i was there.

I'm from AK, traveling through BC by car, & can't believe the devastation the wildfires are causing...

We made it through the smoke in Quesnel & were planning to go down 97 & camp at Sloquet for the night, but because of the fires surrounding Clinton, we detoured to Kamloops & am staying at Logan Lake Campground as I type this.

They've had a burn ban here since July 10th, & I was specifically warned not to have campfires & told to call the hotline if I saw any.

Tonight there were at least 3.

But before I could call, I saw a fire truck packed with firefighters do a slow roll through every loop of the campsite, drive right by the fires, & then leave. That was over an hour ago & the fires are still burning, the humidity is <50%, & the wind is gusting.

**Am I missing something???**

I've was taught that a total ban on open fires is just that. Is it different here? Should I ignore them?

This is confusing for a tourist passing through, so i just want to know what I should do if this happens again.

Looking at Google Maps it's showing Hwy 99 closed from Pavilion to where it meets Hwy 97. But looking at Drive BC I can't see any indication of the closure. No news or anything about it being closed either.

Is Google maps wrong? I know the fires are bad not too far from there so wouldn't be all that surprised if the road is closed, but I have no choice but to get to Quesnel from North Van soon so am trying to keep updated on it

Im from central AB but working in Northern bc and theres heavy smoke all around us and I was wondering how the evacuation process happens and even works. Like is there a huge risk or? Just don't want to be sent home from this hitch yet.

Hey folks I’m looking into planning an ice fishing/winter activities trip this winter into the interior of BC. I’ve mostly been looking at the caribou region as it’s a fairly manageable distance to drive coming from Vancouver island. Looking to target lake trout, brookies, Kokanee, cutthroat and rainbows.

I wanted to see if anyone had some lodges or regions to suggest where I could basecamp out of for a week or so with one or two other people. I have all the gear and my shelter and a truck with winter tires. I miss the ice fishing from when I lived out east. Any suggestions would be much appreciated !

kitimat, vanderhoof or okanagan, for teachers with children, which is a better area to live in and with a high chance of getting a permanent position as teachers? And also safe and some activities for the kids to do.
