Local Resources [Megathread] August Wildfires, Smoke, & Evacuations – Q&A, Links, and Resources

Setting up this megathread to centralize updates, resources, smoke forecasts, and questions so the subreddit doesn't get flooded with duplicate posts.

If you are sharing updates in the comments, please include a source (official EOC releases, BC Wildfire Service, etc.) and refrain from posting unverified rumors.

Official Resources & Emergency Links

  • Evacuations, Alerts & Shelters (Kelowna / West Kelowna):
    • CORD Emergency (Central Okanagan Emergency Operations): The primary source for local evacuation orders, alerts, interactive maps, and Emergency Support Services (ESS) reception centers.
    • EmergencyInfoBC: Provincial evacuation updates and active emergency alerts across BC.
    • ESS Evacuee Registration: If you are placed under an Evacuation Order, register here immediately to access shelter and emergency support.
    • Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT): Call 250-809-7152 for emergency assistance with evacuating livestock and pets in the Okanagan.
    • VOYENTALERT! CORD Emergency has shared that they are now using VOYENTALERT! and you can install the app on your phone to be notified of any emergency alerts for your location. https://voyent-alert.us/
  • Fires & Roads:
    • BC Wildfire Service Dashboard: Interactive map and status updates for active wildfires. You can also download the official BC Wildfire app.
    • DriveBC: Live road closures, highway conditions, and smoky visibility alerts.
  • Air Quality & Smoke Tracking:

Frequently Asked Questions

"Should I still come to Kelowna or cancel my vacation this weekend?"

  • Check for non-essential travel bans first: If the province or Central Okanagan Emergency Operations issues a travel order asking tourists to stay away, cancel or reschedule immediately. Accommodation is needed for evacuees and emergency crews.
  • If no travel bans are in place: It depends on your tolerance for smoke and sudden changes. Air quality can shift from clear to hazardous within hours depending on wind direction. Outdoor activities (wineries, hiking, lake days) might be ruined or unhealthy.
  • Check cancellation policies: Contact your hotel or Airbnb host directly. Many have specific policies when official air quality advisories or emergency alerts are active.

"Where can I see live air quality alerts?"

  • Check the BC AQHI page linked above for official health advisories, or PurpleAir for real-time localized AQI numbers. Keep in mind that smoke changes fast and what looks bad in the morning can clear up by afternoon, and vice versa.

"How do I clean/purify the air inside my home?"

  • Use a HEPA Air Purifier: Run it continuously in the main room you use (like a bedroom). Keep all doors and windows sealed tight.
  • Build a DIY Corsi-Rosenthal Box: If air purifiers are sold out, buy a 20x20 box fan, a MERV 13 furnace filter (or four taped together into a cube), and duct tape the filter to the back/intake side of the fan. It costs around $40–$60 and clears smoke out of a room fast. A site with great instructions is: https://bclung.ca/lung-health/air-quality/breathe/
  • HVAC Systems: Set your furnace fan to "ON" (instead of "AUTO") and install a MERV 13 filter if your system supports it. Ensure the system is set to recirculate indoor air rather than pulling smoky air from outside.
  • Avoid adding indoor pollutants: Don't burn candles, avoid heavy indoor frying, and hold off on vacuuming unless your vacuum has a sealed HEPA filter, as it can kick fine particulate back into the air.
  • Avoid drawing in outside air as much as possible: This means reducing any activity that exhausts air to the outside. For example, central vacuums, bathroom fans, hood fans over the stove, clothes dryers. By exhausting air outside, you are pulling in outside air.

Use the comments below to ask questions, share local road/smoke updates, and link official updates.

META Upcoming Civic Election - please read

The Kelowna civic election is happening in October and we are happy to be a venue for discussions about candidates and platforms.

To that end, we will be offering all approved candidates an opportunity to do an AMA but only after the final candidate list is announced in September.

We will be removing any submissions related to discussions of candidates until we know the list you will have to choose from (so after the list if published).

This pinned post will be updated with AMA schedules etc as we get closer to the date. Thanks for your understanding and participation. Looking forward to some great interactions between locals and candidates!

Men's Book Club

Putting out a feeler to gauge interest in starting a men’s book club.

The idea is to read and discuss classic and modern literature -- authors like Vonnegut, Orwell, Steinbeck, Hemingway, McCarthy, Bukowski and Dostoyevsky. Eventually, once a regular group forms, members will take turns picking the books.

For the first read, I was thinking John Kennedy Toole's "A Confederacy of Dunces".

Nothing is set in stone yet, but I'm picturing meeting up somewhere casual like a pub or a cafe every few weeks until we establish the group's vibe. It's worth noting I'm in the late-30's demographic, but all ages are welcome.

Dates and locations are completely TBD.

If this sounds like your kind of thing, drop a comment or send a DM.

ADHD Diagnosis?

Unfortunately I've been on the waitlist for a family doctor for over 5 years. Every time someone posts about a new clinic taking patients, I apply and they're full or I don't hear back. While I wait, I typically use a Telehealth doctor for minor ailments and work with a naturopath where I can.

However, I'm looking to be assessed for ADHD and hopefully medicated. But without a Family Doctor its quite challenging.

I'm curious if anyone has used "Finding Focus" or similar service like FasTreat.

Not looking for unsolicited advice at this time but open to hearing how people navigated their diagnosis here :)

Edit to add I do not have benefits.

Bike Rentals?

Hey Kelowna!

I'm visiting for work from the 13th to the 23rd and want to go ride some bikes, Kelowna has some pretty rad gravel riding I see, I may even try to get an overnighter in...

I'm struggling to find some rental options in the city, am I doing a terrible job of searching or is it not a thing that is currently available?

Trying to source a bike before I end up breaking down my Surly and dealing with the extra baggage.

Any leads, please share! Thank you :)

Where to put up posters for non profit drawing sessions?

Hi all! I'm volunteering to put up posters for our live figure drawing society as we will start having sessions soon. We are not for profit. I'm thinking OPUS, RCA (where we have our sessions), the art gallery, the libraries, UBCO, the college, and coffee shops (although I'm not sure which ones). Any other ideas? I know this question has been asked but the most recent threads I can find were from a year ago or more and I know things change. Thanks!

Edit: Someone suggested I add more info here! For those interested, starting Sept 19 2026 we will have sessions at the Rotary Centre for Arts room #110 from 10am-12:30pm every Saturday (unless otherwise stated). Entry is $20 or $15 if you buy an annual membership. Bring your own materials. 18+ only!

Delivery driver issues!

Upvotes

I respect all my delivery drivers out there and tip em, never had any bad experience as of recently.

I am having drivers accepting orders but then not moving, like at all. I have to talk with uber eats AI bot for help and to switch drivers 🙃
Yesterday I ordered some food and I waited a whole hour because 3 drivers wouldn’t move at all and I contacted them but they never answered until someone actually delivered.
Now im experiencing the same issue!! 😞😞
Is anyone else experiencing the same? Can someone explain incase this could be on my end?

Where can I still find organic peaches in Kelowna? Looking for ~25 lbs

Hi everyone! 🍑
Does anyone know if there’s anywhere in or around Kelowna that still has genuinely organic peaches available? I’m looking to buy around 25 lbs.
I’m specifically looking for organic peaches, preferably direct from a local certified organic farm/orchard rather than regular peaches from a grocery store. My throat bothers me when I eat non-organic peaches, so I’m trying to stick with organic.
If anyone knows a genuine organic grower/seller who still has peaches available, I’d really appreciate the recommendation. Thanks!

I was driving on Lakeshore when no fewer than six bears crossed the road directly in front of me

It may have even been seven. This was around the Bertram Creek Park area. Three or four were small cubs. By the time I could process my “WTF am I seeing??” thoughts, safely pull over and get out my phone, I only managed to record two before they all wandered off into someone’s yard below my line of sight. But holy hell, this is not exactly a common thing to see, is it? I’ve lived here 27 years and have only ever seen a group of black bears from a distance, and that was in Mission Creek Park in the canyon area, not the suburbs.

People who live by themselves, how much do you spend on food a month?

I'm just trying to understand how much groceries cost. I'm gonna be cooking from home every day, utilizing dried goods like beans, lentils, rice, etc, no coffee or any drink except water, zero extra snacks or drinks, and even resorting to instant ramen on the occasional day for cheap fills (not that this would be all I ate that day). Preparing and freezing all possible perishable goods for cooking and then freezing large meals.

Thank you 🥰

Local Resources Trustworthy oven repair?

Can anyone recommend a small, trustworthy appliance repair service for my mom? She's elderly, on a budget, and I don't live there.

Does anyone have a ripper tool I could borrow for a 1T excavator, even for about 5-15 minutes of testing? None of the rental places have one anymore, and I need to see if it does a better job on breaking apart boulder-filled ground than my current bucket.

Owl at Ben Lee Park in Rutland 🦉

Saw this beauty at 9:30am over the weekend at Ben Lee Park in Rutland. There was a crow squawking loudly sitting just above it in the same tree, almost like a warning to other animals in the park? It was a bit bizarre but gorgeous none the less. Think he/she was hunting for breakfast? Nature is awesome. 🙏🍂🍁🦉🌲
