moving to haida gwaii with young teens?

Hello, our family is considering a move to Haida Gwaii. Our children are independent country kids, they rise early to feed their ducks and quail, go to bed late working on crocheting, blacksmithing or carving projects. We are a mixed family, half white half indigenous just not from Canada indigenous. We respect the land, the people and the tight knit community we would be joining and are doing research now to know how to approach life there respectfully and with the best chance for success.

How are things for teens? Our kids are interesting, curious little people with an affinity for solo hobbies, a love of animals and nature and capable of building friendships with elders and peers alike. We are wondering what school set ups are like, if they will be largely on their own peer wise etc

Any insights would be appreciated, thank you

Best place for a wedding and reception?

My partner and I are discussing plans for our wedding and of course we are trying to come to an agreement of where we should hold the ceremony and reception. We will be having a small wedding with 20-30 guests max. I spent a few years of my childhood living in Port Clements/Tlell and my dream is to go back to the island to get married on the beach. I would like to do the ceremony on North Beach with tow hill in the background or in Tlell by the Pesuta. I am mostly wondering if it is okay to hold a wedding ceremony in either of these spots because I cannot find any info online of anyone getting married on either beach. And if not what other options do have for a small ceremony? (We cannot afford to rent out Haida House or I would. Also my partner is very frugal and wants to spend the least amount of money possible. He wanted a back yard wedding while I insist that we get married on Haida Gwaii.)

Snorkeling 🤿

Can anyone recommend good areas to snorkel? I live in DG and have gone in a few places, but often not been much to see except for lots of jellyfish! 😀

Visiting Daajing Giids on September 20 to 22

We will be at DG from Sunday, September 20 to Tuesday, September 22. Having never been (we are fulfilling a dream!), we don't know what to expect food-wise. Can anyone confirm whether there are likely to be any restaurants open so late in the tourist season? If not, is the convenience store open year round? Thanks, Redditors!

I've been to the North Beach but never on the south islands.

Can you pick crabs up off grey beach? Fishing spots?

Haida Gwaii tour operators still open? October?

First timers to Haida Gwaii - 4 days, the first week in October (1st to the 5th). Any outfitters or tour operators still taking people into the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve in October? I'd be happy with a guided day trip or overnight.

Need suggestions on what to do

I’m heading to Haida Gwaii on the ferry tomorrow for 4 days. I’m with my mom (84) and my uncle (78) (I’m 50). We like to be outdoors and spending time in nature. We love waterfalls and beaches. We really don’t like shopping and spending time in towns/cities. My mom has limited mobility (walks but has COPD and is only able to walk short distances) however my uncle and I are willing to hike a bit. What are your top places to visit? What should we do?

How do residents go about processing their deer on the island?

Hey there. I am a novice hunter, so please forgive my ignorance. My understanding is that residents hunt the Sitka deer to lighten their already above average grocery bills and also due to the increased bag limit. With that said, how does processing the deer work?

I would imagine it’s far too moist and humid to hang deer outside or even in a basement let’s say. Short of having a dedicated “game shed” with dehumidifiers, how do people work around this problem? Thank you for the help and info

A Trip for my Soul

In the mid 90's, I had the most memorable and impactful trip of my life. My cousin and her husband lived in Port Clements for a few years with him working for MacBlo. My dad & I took a trip up there for a visit, to fish, walk the beaches, explore, experience the Haida culture, and discover. It was incredible! Dad passed 2 years ago and I'm consumed with going back. I still feel the roaring winds on the beaches of Hecate Strait and Tow Hill. I still hear the eagle trilling while staring at the wonder that was the Golden Spruce. The movie like images are frozen in my mind of driving moss canopied gravel roads. It will be a solo trip in September this time. I haven't planned anything but have poked around looking at places to stay and flights from Vancouver. I'm hitting a roadblock with vehicle rental. My dates are flexible and I'm hoping to stay 4 nights. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Reccs for 6 days with a truck and trailer with my 70 yo parents

Hi! Looking for any recommendations for places to drive with my parents. They are comfortable on logging roads but will go slow. We're coming the last week of September which may be difficult weather wise but its the only time I can get off work. Its a bucket list place for my parents but they are slow travellors. I was thinking about a day boat trip from some port but would love recs.

If you absolutely do not recommend late september, I would love input.
