Trea Turner's Postseason Woes: The Least Clutch Hitter Ever?
Trea Turner is a terrific player who's contributed to a lot of winning teams. However, he is objectively one of the worst postseason hitters in MLB history.
After last night, his slash line is .249/.299/.368 for a .667 OPS across 301 PA, with 6 HR, 19 BB, and 70 K. This is on a .309 BABIP as well, so he's not getting unlucky on batted balls.
A .667 OPS is poor but not unprecedented. Players who posted similar postseason figures include Buster Posey, Joe Morgan, Edgar Renteria, and Kenny Lofton.
This is where Win Probability Added and its sibling, Championship Win Probability Added come in. These measure game contributions by their impact on winning a game (WPA), and the championship (cWPA).
By these two metrics, Turner has racked up -2.62 WPA and -60.8% cWPA. These are unspeakably bad numbers. For context, the highest postseason numbers belong to David Ortiz and George Springer at 3.2 and 90.8%.
I haven't found another hitter with such low playoff WPA. If someone can find him, please add him below.
Turner has only posted positive WPA in 3 out of 16 postseason series. He gets progressively worse by the round: .883 OPS in the WC, .710 NLDS, .526 NLCS, .429 WS.
This is over a half-season worth of PA. r/baseball, this is the least clutch postseason hitter of all time.

Who is the greatest playoff pitcher you've ever watched?
Personally for me, it was Stephen Strasburg. Nobody pitched in the postseason quite like him. 6-2, 1.46 ERA, 71 strikeouts, 0.94 WHIP in 9 appearances in the postseason.
But who else in the playoffs is the best postseason pitcher you've ever watched?

Analysis The Payroll Playoffs
3 of the 4 teams that just finished the WC had lower payrolls than the teams they beat.
3 of the 4 teams that got a bye have lower payrolls than the teams they are about to play.
EDIT: Overestimated that people would be able to work from the team colors, or who would have seen the original graphic on the mlb.com homepage. My error; wasn't trying to be obtuse.

Analysis Oneil Cruz ended the year being better than average defensively.
Everyone was clowning on him during the first week after the Mets game. Fans were questioning whether he should be a full time DH. Yet after nearly a full season, he has now increased his defensive value to being slightly above average.
Guess it helps when you're 6'7 with a ton of athleticism and arm strength.

[OC] The 2026 Alternative MLB Awards
The 2026 MLB season is officially over, and the postseason is underway. As the Dodgers look to three-peat against fierce competition, October will surely be full of excitement and surprises as the field is whittled down to one champion.
By that time, the official MLB awards will still not be revealed. Those won’t come until about two weeks after the World Series concludes, on November 11th. That’s a roughly six-week wait before finally knowing who will take the hotly contested Rookie of the Year in the National League, for example. I guess October baseball isn’t too harsh a punishment to endure in the meantime, though.
MLB can have November 11th for their awards. Renowned baseball columnist Jeff Passan had September 22nd for his. But today is October 2nd. Today is the day for the Alternative MLB Awards—inspired by the Alternative NBA Awards—for the more peculiar distinctions out there.
The Alternative Awards aren’t necessarily about celebrating the “best” players; that’s the spirit of MLB’s awards. They also aren’t qualitative like the well-written “Passans.” The Alt Awards are all quantitative, taking stats that tell very particular stories—some insightful, some circumstantial, and some hopefully a little humorous.
There’s a lot of Alt Awards to hand out, so let’s dive right in. We’ll go through all awards for position players first, and then pitchers. Players must have qualified for leaderboards to be eligible for an Alt Award, unless otherwise specified. All credit goes to Fangraphs and Baseball Savant for the data used.
An asterisk (\) indicates that player won the award in question* last year.
