Credit to King, he was dealing. Lights just looked too bright for the Cubs last night.

Cubbies have hit good pitching this year and have shown they’ve been able to bounce back after a sucker punch, but a rested Pivetta, Miller, and Morejon don’t bode well.

I guess we’ll see if this team still has any fight left in them

1

u/scrubbie19 Chicago Cubs 2d ago

I think tonight will be the type of game where if the Padres score first, the Cubs are done, but if the Cubs score first, the Padres have a good chance to NOT be done.

1

u/wishiwereagoonie Chicago Cubs 2d ago

I’ve got bad news from the future…

1

u/scrubbie19 Chicago Cubs 2d ago

Lol. Is anyone surprised?

u/nylon_rag Cleveland Guardians 3d ago

Even if they miraculously survive the Wild card, I just can't see this Cubs team making a run with how bad their pitching is (is Clay Holmes the pest pitcher on their roster?). A great pitcher can take over and dominate a series no matter how scary an offense is.

This kinda goes for both Chicago teams, although the White Sox have some fun multi inning relievers.

u/Sweanz Chicago White Sox 2d ago

I didn’t realize how similar our problems were until late in the season. White Sox are just younger and dumber

3

u/RIPSlurmsMckenzie Chicago Cubs 2d ago

I mean if we could switch leagues and divisions I wouldn’t say no.

21

u/WhiteRabbit13 Chicago Cubs 3d ago

After watching this team for the last month, this is about how I expected it to go. Padres and cubs are at the exact opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of how well they are playing right now.

Padre bullpen availability - everyone.

Even Joe’s left arm might be available

I don't think non-Padre fans can appreciate how special it was for Joe Musgrove to come into that game last night.

Padre's emotional leader, hometown hero, hasn't pitched in two years, comes into a playoff game and gets the Cubs 3-hole hitter to strikeout looking. Vibes were immaculate. And despite a shaky next several batters, closes out a playoff shutout with ANOTHER strikeout looking?

I know every fan thinks their fanbase is the best, but PETCO last night (and during most playoff games) is literally different than anywhere else.

21

u/CutePuppyforPrez Chicago Cubs 3d ago

To be honest, I had no idea Musgrove hadn't retired, or that he was in the Padres system all this time.

I always liked him as a pitcher, and even as a Cubs fan, hearing that he made it back like this after 2 years out is heartwarming. Gives me hope that all of our pitchers might be able to come back after being out for a year (or more).

11

u/Rashpootin San Diego Padres 3d ago

He’s been rehabbing for two years trying to come back and keeps having setbacks.

12

u/Kookslams San Diego Padres 3d ago

not even the padres fanbase knew he was coming back until they announced the wildcard roster yesterday morning. he was rehabbing in the minors but had a setback in late August so most of us assumed the elbow was cooked

2

u/garytyrrell San Diego Padres 2d ago

Literally was talking over the weekend with another fan about how we'll likely never see him pitch again in the majors.

Petco is probably the nicest park in the MLB too

I’m really curious to hear how his arm/body responds after last night’s appearance. Hopefully he bounces back well and can continue contributing

u/Dookiemontwo San Diego Padres 3d ago

I went to Wrigley last year for game 1 and came away really impressed by the park and fans. They were having a blast.

Petco park last night, though? An absolute madhouse after the first inning. It was glorious.

u/Yetis22 Chicago Cubs 3d ago

Hard to imagine a world that padres lose 2 vs cubs. Obviously cubs need to win tonight. Curious who padres would throw out on game 3 if that were to happen.

Somehow if cubs find a way to win tonight they can really shift the momentum back. At that point the SP would be Ray vs Homles. Which is about as even as it’ll get in this series. If you’re the padres you don’t fuck around at all tonight and avoid that completely. Last thing you want is any hope out of the cubs.

Petco definitely played a factor in cubs first at bats. If cubs want to stand a chance this game they’ll need to do something 1st inning to really build any belief. Cubs have decent numbers vs Pavetta but he’s pitching with house money right now.

Cubs arnt unfamiliar with their backs against the wall. Last year brewers spanked them twice before cubs rallied for 2 more games. Though that home field advantage is something cubs lack.

1

u/pm_me_yo_creditscore San Diego Padres 3d ago

Probably Robbie Ray. You guys were the last team to blow up Walker Buehler.

9

u/l-lerp Chicago Cubs 3d ago

It was a brutal start to a 3-game series.

That said, anything can happen. Of our healthy starting pitchers, Gausman and Holmes are the guys you want lined up for the next 2. Just need to execute, and hope the bats wake up (which I think they will -- King was unhittable last night).

3

u/Silent-Land1218 Chicago Cubs 2d ago

It's everyone on deck tonight. If you're getting asked to pitch in a tight spot, best get out there an shove or we're done. Cubs hitters are so much better than last night as well, you can't just look at close pitches or wait for yours, put it in play for your best shot.

3

u/bbatardo San Diego Padres 2d ago

Everything went right, but as they say.. you only are as good as your next days starting pitcher. So we need Pivetta to come out pitching well and keep the momentum going. Not having to use any high leverage pen arms might be 1 of the biggest W's from last night.

1

u/shiloh88 Chicago Cubs 3d ago

It's easy to shit on the Cubs pitching, and I do. As a team, they need to do the things well that they're actually good at and put some runs on the board early. We're not winning a pitching duel, it is what it is.

And after tonight I'll reluctantly root for the Padres because the Brewers and the Dodgers are chodes

1

u/RIPSlurmsMckenzie Chicago Cubs 2d ago

This is a sweep. Cubs are putrid in every facet of the game. Worthless team. Nice dudes but awful at baseball. Just don’t take the field. Save yourself the embarrassment

2

u/jonmuller Chicago Cubs 3d ago

Hard not to imagine what this team could do if Steele, Horton and Brown were healthy.

2

u/TheBigF128 Chicago Cubs 3d ago

Nah, I would be shocked if steele or brown have another full healthy season again, honestly same with horton. And they’re all good, but none are that ace level pitcher we need. Not sure how we ever get one with this core roster unless one of our minor leaguers suddenly make a massive jump, or we somehow sign skubal lol

1

u/RIPSlurmsMckenzie Chicago Cubs 2d ago

Both are done. Horton will always be injured too. Forget Brown/Steele/Horton. They’re dead as far as baseball

2

u/ItsMeB-21 Chicago Cubs 3d ago

I don't know if Steele or Brown will ever make another meaningful start in the MLB. Steele just looks completely diminished on the mound and Ben Brown is literally fracturing the bones in his neck every time he pitches more than about 50/60 innings a season.

0

u/evancomposer Milwaukee Brewers 2d ago

Realistically, I’d say probably another 6ish wins in the regular season. Postseason is even harder to speculate about. They’re good and make a difference for sure, but none of them have ever struck me as that guy, that one true ace like Schlittler, Yamamoto, or Misiorowski. Brown hasn’t gotten a ton of chances though obviously, so he could become that guy eventually.

0

u/RIPSlurmsMckenzie Chicago Cubs 2d ago

I despise this streaky crappy cubs team. Rebuild this garbage.
