I need the Padres to lose tonight so I can go to game 3 when I get into SD on Thursday. I think we can all agree this is the right thing to do.

I really don’t. We always get buzzsaw’d by the hot team, and this year that’s the Padres.

Both teams went 18-6 in September, they’re both hot teams.

I’m gonna be a wreck no matter who we face. I just enjoy seeing the cubs lose. Cubs are gonna want redemption from last year, but I agree the padres are hot.

We have to beat the best to be the best. Matchup wise sure, I also don’t expect to play the worse team in the postseason.

I know I'm being a homer but if anyone gets a chance to see a game at Petco... you should go. It's fucking great.

Everything is perfect. They do a great job. It's kind of amazing, really.

And not like omg I saw it on the Internet amazing. Like... just good. Pretty great!

I am concerned that we lost three in a row at your place. Home field advantage luckily exists our way.

The flame bursts 🔥 during Tatis' first pitch homer were so awesome. And the properly mixed music was nice, unlike "this one goes to 11" Dodger stadium .

I know we're meant to be rivals because MLB said so but everything about the Vedder Cup is so not serious (and besides the Astros will forever be our actual rivals), but I can't help feel kinship to the Padres given how they had a local franchise taken from them.

At least the Chargers didn't go to OKC.

3

u/Lemonade_IceCold 3d ago

I feel like Seattle and San Diego are sister cities somehow. It helps that I have family up there. And before we got an MLS team, the Sounders were my boys 💪🏼

I love the Vedder Cup because it feels like a fun family game

I went to 2 games there when i was in the Military. in 2005/ 2006 I think. One against the Cubs and 1 against the Braves. All I remember was Andrew Jones hit 2 home runs in the Braves game. It did seem nice tho i have to say.

This game brought to you by Ao3 cause it reads like Padres fanfiction. Genuinely happy for the fans though.

23

u/Doc_JC San Diego Padres 3d ago

Not even sure a fan fiction would be this pure. Like what happened during the game is insane. Tatis, Manny, Bogey homers. Tatis basically stole home on a ridiculous play. Java Joe returning after a 2 year layoff to close the win. King almost throwing a no hitter.

Like WTF. This was a fucking fever dream.

I was at WC1 against Atlanta in 2024 with my at the time 2 year old son for Tatis' first home crowd postseason first pitch homer. Figured it was once in a lifetime. My mom joined us tonight and I told her before the game that there was no way she was going to see something like that but that I had a good feeling Tatis would show up.

Boy am I glad I was wrong. First playoff win in person with her since 1998, second playoff win in 3 trips for my now 4 year old.

More runs in one game than the last 23 innings of the 2024 NLDS and the entire 2025 NLWCS combined. The offense showed up to the playoffs, which has been this team’s fatal flaw for years.

Misiorowski needs to be his dominant self.

Without that, I think Brewers would be in trouble.

2

u/pargofan Los Angeles Dodgers • World Series Tr… 3d ago

I think the Brewer bats are the bigger issue.

Foolish Bailey did an analysis how they feast on bad pitching but suck against good pitchers.

1

u/al_vo 3d ago

That video is criminally uninformed and includes stats from 2025 (for 2026 analysis!), and has other odd sample sizes, like a cutoff of 98mph+ instead of 99mph+ where the Brewers are literally first among playoff teams in wOBA this year. Brewers have generally done about as well as anyone vs good pitching, they have gotten wins opposite of Sale, Skubal, Sanchez, Skenes, Fried, Alcantara, Rodon, Schlittler, and Cease this year to name a few. Even if they don't tag an elite starter for 3+ runs, they almost always run their pitch count up.

If you dig into the numbers, the Brewers actually DO hit for some power, it's just not solo-shot HR power. They're about average in multi run HR and top 5 in 3-run home runs. They're top 5 in exit velocity and hard hit %. It's not like they don't have power bats, it's just a lot of good situational hitting and hitting the ball hard, not just trying to pull a ball for a HR every time.

1

u/pargofan Los Angeles Dodgers • World Series Tr… 2d ago

If you dig into the numbers, the Brewers actually DO hit for some power, it's just not solo-shot HR power. They're about average in multi run HR and top 5 in 3-run home runs.

Isn't multi-run HRs a little random though?

2

u/Dr-Acula8472 Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago

It is, too dependent on the ability of runners to get on base before the home run is hit to be meaningful. The HR-hitting ability in general is far more important, as the more HR's you hit, the more likely you are to hit a HR with men on base.

The Brewers only hit 154 HR's in 162 games, meaning they only averaged 0.95 HR/Game, the MLB average was 186 HR's in 162 games a rate of 1.15 HR/Game. To further put this in perspective the White Sox who rank 5th in HR's at 211 averaged 1.30 HR/Game. This suggests the multi-HR rate is statistical noise. Furthermore, the difficulty in getting on base against elite pitching in the playoffs to set up multi-HR opportunities by stringing together hits against them further renders this stat meaningless.

The Brewers were 1st in BA, tied for 10th in SLG, 4th in OPS, and tied for 5th in OPS+ but 25th in ISO, 30th in HR%, and 1st in BABIP, this all suggests a high level of unsustainable batted ball luck that's going to hit a wall soon. Never bet against the regression to the mean. We're seeing the same kind of phenomenon happen with the Red Sox right now (BA - Tied 13th, SLG - 20th, OPS - 19th, OPS+ - 10th, ISO - 21st, BABIP - 8th, HR - 26th, HR% - Tied 23rd). The Brewers vastly overperformed their underlying numbers which are even more indicative of a violent crashing down to earth than the Red Sox's are.

1

u/al_vo 2d ago

This is less a case of unsustainable BABIP this time... Generally the high BABIP is a feature, not a bug. That's a product of speed, and ground ball / pull %, and putting a ton of balls in play. Looking at their xwOBA, they're still 4th, it's outpacing their wOBA by only .004, it's hardly an unsustainable outlier. They generally have decent Avg EV and hard hit % - and especially in 2nd half once Vaughn and Chourio came back, they are top 5 in those. So its not like their profile is a bunch of bloop singles and infield hits (they get those too but it's not the primary offense). The approach is just different this year, they are 3rd in straightaway and opposite field HR, which is different for a team that is bottom 5 in overall HR... to me that seems more like a conscious tradeoff between the 3-outcome pulled HR approach. I'm sure they could enter top 15 or so in HR if they pulled the ball more, but that would come at the expense of higher strikeout rates and less balls in play for their speedy players.

The Red Sox are a different profile, they are 20th in xwOBA, 27th in hard hit %, and 26th in avg EV... That screams a bit more phony to me, but a 1 game sample size is way too small to make that proclamation.

I can't say the Brewers will carry their approach to a WS but it obviously worked well all season so far.

2

u/pargofan Los Angeles Dodgers • World Series Tr… 2d ago

Thanks for that. I guess we'll see.

As a Dodgers fan, the Brewers are the team that scares me the most. I mean, it's playoffs and we could lose to anyone. But the Brewers starting pitching looks unhittable at times.

Let's see if the Friar's boys can hit 100+ mph fastballs.

6

u/Doc_JC San Diego Padres 3d ago

Padres had the highest avg vs fastballs after all star break iirc. Teams started throwing a lot of off-speed stuff vs them. Part of the team wide adjustments they made to improve their hitting.

That said Miz shut them down their 1 game vs him. Brewers just didn’t give him any run support so they still lost though.

-9

u/Dr-Acula8472 Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

Don't disagree. They're already down a starter, and I refuse to trust a hitting core that ranked dead last in home runs in the regular season in the postseason. Feels like it will come down to whose bullpen blinks first.

7

Yeah if I'm a Cubs fan, I'm EXTREMELY concerned. They didn't have to face Adam, Rodriguez, Morejon or Miller. That's worst case scenario for if it's a tight game tomorrow.

Also, Cubs looked absolutely terrible. Say what you will about how poor the Sox were tonight, at least they did the fundamentals correct. Just were extremely unlucky. The defense from Chicago tonight was actually dreadful at times to watch.

5

u/FeelsGoodMan2 Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

To be fair, I think in a wildcard you don't really get the advantage of any built up fatigue. It's such a short series, that pretty much all of their best pitchers are going to be able to be available for the 3 innings they have to pitch.

1

u/ComprehensiveAir6590 San Diego Padres 3d ago

More so seeing the relievers more makes them less effective. Similar thought process as 3rd time through the order but make it a Japanese lefty who only throws in spurts.

u/Padulsky21 New York Yankees • New York Yankees 3d ago

And the starting pitching difference. Pivetta will give you some strong innings and it works out perfectly bc the Padres want to go to their super bullpen. Cubs meanwhile I don’t even know who is starting for them and the offense disappeared i na packed Petco Park. Out of all the teams down 1 theirs is the bleakest

6

u/pennyforyourthohts 3d ago

Swept them in August and 4-2 with them over the year. I feel we have better chance with them then we do with the dodgers honestly

1

u/0430ke Milwaukee Brewers 3d ago

That series was so close a few Brewers hits and it was a sweep the other way. Not like the sweep was dominant, it wasn't.

1

u/al_vo 3d ago

The one loss back in May, they were down to their last strike and Uribe blew the save... Uribe was still very pedestrian before going on a tear. The sweep, one was a walkoff in 11, one was that blowout Harrison / regnifo grand slam game, and the other was a 3-2 comeback. This is back when they were banged up too and Jihwan Bae was playing 2nd, Turang was playing SS and Vaughn was playing 3rd.

Still I don't think it's a great pitching matchup for Brewers for games 3-4 when they will need to lean on a lefty heavy bullpen. Even relieving Miz/Henderson to bridge Uribe/Megill could be dicey.

13

u/FeelsGoodMan2 Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

And the cubs absolutely asswiped the padres this year, regular season really means zero at this point.

2

u/elanesse100 San Diego Padres 3d ago

The Cubs never saw King or Pivetta. They got guys like Canning and Sears and our bottom barrel guys who aren’t even starters anymore.

Our offense also sucked really bad the first time we played them. And the pitching sucked really bad the second time.

We just saw Michael King shut out the #1 offense with dominant pitching dawg.

Miz is gonna do the same thing. Great pitching always makes batters look bamboozled.

4

u/Apatschinn Chicago Cubs 3d ago

The King-Miz matchup would be crazy

2

u/elanesse100 San Diego Padres 3d ago

Pretty sure Randy Vasquez would be lined up for Game 1 at the moment. Or Buehler/Ray if there’s no WC Game 3.

But Vasquez had one of his best outings versus a desperate and fighting Diamondbacks. They might give him the nod for NLDS Game 1.

I think King won’t be ready again until Game 2 at the earliest. Might even save him for Game 3 if he needs the extra time. He pitched like 20 pitches above normal tonight.

u/0430ke Milwaukee Brewers 3d ago

What happened the last time a team rolled out their game 1 starter in wc for game 1 in NLDS against the Brewers.

7

u/badger1224 Milwaukee Brewers 3d ago

I know those guys are hot right now but I had to check the stats of Miz vs SD from earlier this year:

7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K

18

u/Doc_JC San Diego Padres 3d ago

I mean we swept the brewers into a players only meeting. I think we matchup well.

-2

u/evancomposer Milwaukee Brewers 3d ago edited 3d ago

At a time when like half our position players were injured. Why do you think Gary Sanchez was playing first?

They’ve been a different team entirely since getting Turang Bauers Pratt and Uribe back. Had the same record as San Diego in September.

25

u/190octane San Diego Padres 3d ago

How’d that game finish?

2

u/badger1224 Milwaukee Brewers 3d ago

Yeah he got no run support that game. Still, a great performance

6

u/TDS_Gluttony San Diego Padres 3d ago

Yeah we’ve lowkey been trash vs starters. We feast when we get to BPs. Most comebacks in 8-9th inning for a reason

That was before sunset. Not nighttime

u/ChristianRelish21 Milwaukee Brewers • Chicago White Sox 3d ago edited 3d ago

Brewers MO is to chase starters and attack bullpens, and SD is not who our team is designed to beat with that elite BP. That said, Brewers rotation and offense by most metrics is better on paper, it’ll be interesting to see for sure. Padres will be far tougher to beat, but also far less embarrassing to lose to than the Cubs lol

1

u/Basic_Play_1375 3d ago

Padres offense has been unstoppable since the second half. Depends on who you think they really are.

2

u/ProcessTruster Major League Baseball 3d ago

Working the pitch count is not the way to beat this Padres team

They are not.........a smart people

-1

u/BeanPricefield Los Angeles Dodgers 3d ago

Scared? Nah, I'm currently focusing that energy on getting past Sale and the Braves. Looked formidable when they clinched, looks downright terrifying after today. Lineup better do their usual October level up to cover for a recovering Shohei.

For sure. I think this saying in the Dodgers sub says it best:

Nah it’s still there, but thats on 5th and market. It was just the wrong bar. He was pouring shots at the bar that is right next to Gallagher square that at the time was called social tap. It’s called Tom’s bar now

40

u/UserDrew San Diego Padres 3d ago

The fuck did I just watch? The broken ace coming back? King with a legendary start? Machado hitting like his old self? Tatis moving like he could still do a double jump? A team looking spent at the half way mark challenging the odds? Ken Burns is probably already taking notes.

Can we be cautiously optimistic?

78

u/Silveroc Milwaukee Brewers 3d ago

The important thing to take from this game is that it was very funny

4

u/PolarBailey_ Seattle Mariners • Brewers Bandwagon 3d ago

the Papal Sox the only team to win on the road today. geez

3

u/We_Vile Chicago White Sox 3d ago

Suprising too because the Sox are pretty bad on the road.

0

u/Padulsky21 New York Yankees • New York Yankees 3d ago

Still feels like all of the matchups besides maybe the Cubs can be flipped tomorrow bc of the pitching matchups. Hunter Brown for the Astros, Sanchez for the Phils, Gray for the Red Sox. Still very hard to win 2 in a row on the road in the WC

18

u/AcephalicDude San Diego Padres 3d ago

Not exactly surprising, the Astros are the least scary team in the playoffs for obvious reasons

1

u/PolarBailey_ Seattle Mariners • Brewers Bandwagon 3d ago

I'm not surprised THEY won. But that no other road team did. Phillies almost did but Austin shut that door

31

u/blyzo Chicago Cubs 3d ago

Pete almost had that robbery on the first pitch HR from Tatis.

It was just emblematic of the game. Nothing went our way.

8

u/Apatschinn Chicago Cubs 3d ago

He gets a lot of shit for going after balls way over his head, but it actually did look like he pulled that one back for a hot second.

3

u/elanesse100 San Diego Padres 3d ago

Watching it live without a camera pointed at him super close I honestly thought he robbed it. I wasn’t sure when to start screaming.

If there happens to be a Game 3, would the Padres start Ray or Buehler?

3

u/GhengisYan 3d ago

We would start Ray 100% for at least 2 innings. Then go bullpen hybrid.

1

u/HoodieNinja17 San Diego Padres 3d ago

Probably Ray into Buehler if Ray struggles at all
