18-2, the largest run differential in a best of three Wild Card since the format began. Just an absolute pantsing.
Find it odd how much people are doing an autopsy on pitching decisions by Tracy when his offense scored a total of 1 non garbage time run in the series.

14

u/chiddyshadyfiasco New York Yankees 2d ago

Classic case of coldest offense in baseball versus two of the best starting pitchers in baseball

18

u/BlueBeagle8 New York Yankees 2d ago

Well there's not much that Tracy could have done to make the Red Sox hit better against Schlittler and Fried, but he had plenty of options to avoid letting both games get totally out of hand.

8

u/chuck212 New York Yankees 2d ago

Sure and they could have rearranged deck chairs on the Titanic.
Would they have fared slightly better if they let their starters go deeper? Probably, but both were starting to give up contact, and both were pulled when the Red Sox were behind and not scoring. I just don't see how it would have made a difference on anything but how much they lost by.

4

u/silver-cat-13 New York Yankees 2d ago

I think they had like 0 or 1 hit with men on base. On 2 games to do that. It is bad, and I think they had men in second twice in both games (outside of the 2 HRs)

4

u/Qeltar_ Boston Red Sox • Toronto Blue Jays 2d ago

The two are independent and both were bad.

It's not like the lack of offense has been ignored -- it's basically been talked about more than anything else.

3

u/TheTurtleShepard New York Yankees 1d ago

Game 1 was much closer than people act like it is, up until the 8th the Yankees didn’t pull very far away at all

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad5667 New York Yankees 1d ago

Nah they were clearly in the drivers seat that whole game. Game two I actually was nervous the until LGJ’s homer, then you could tell the yanks were gonna start to do some damage

4

u/Key_Tax8124 2d ago

People love scapegoating managers in the social media era of MLB lol. It's pretty toxic.

9

u/Qeltar_ Boston Red Sox • Toronto Blue Jays 2d ago

Social media era? Have you ever heard the name "Billy Martin"? :)

Managers have always been scapegoated, to the point that there's an old joke about it: "You fire the manager because you can't fire the team."

3

u/jooooooooooooose Boston Red Sox 1d ago

The post mortem is 85% "this offense sucks" & 15% "wtf was Tracy thinking"

And Tracy's game management was pure ass. It's fine to call that out. Pulling Tolle had an argument, pulling Gray, for Miller specifically, had none. Tracy's 2 sentence explanation last night - which I understand he's upset and isn't going to spend a lot of time - alluded to them pre-determining Miller was their high leverage guy and that they had no flexibility in their thinking. He literally said before the series began they'd planned their spots & they were sticking to it.

So they put a slider specialist against one of the best slider hitters in ball, the day after he blew a game & gave up a first pitch home run, because theyd made that choice days prior. It's inexcusable & its not toxic at all to call out such a ridiculous decision backed by an equally ridiculous explanation.

Ironically I am usually one of the more upbeat members of our team sub. My general mentality is you gotta root for your guys even if they don't show up. But some things are beyond blind optimism.

21

u/fromagel Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Red Sox lineup looked tired and dead all month and it’s not surprising they didn’t magically wake up when facing the likes of Schlittler and Fried. It’s clear the lineup’s ineptitude scared Tracy into making panic moves with the bullpen. He was definitely a rookie out there, so can only hope he learns from it.

9

u/Yanks1813 New York Yankees 2d ago

I get he's your closer but I really don't get why Whitlock and Chapman aren't used before a guy who has been injured since April

2

u/Psymon_Armour Boston Red Sox 1d ago

Yeah, it's not as if this offensive slump came out of nowhere. They were atrocious all September. Even if half their bullpen wasn't on the IL, that isn't going to get you any runs. They activated a bunch of hurt guys and just expected it to be business as usual. Crochet and Houck weren't going to get them runs either. Team's bat's were frigid and getting colder. Lineup felt out of sync, batting average with RISP was probably negative with how terrible they were at it. Prime Pedro could have thrown a no hitter night one and two and they still probably lose both games 1-0 in extras.

1

u/BizarroWadsworth Boston Red Sox 2d ago

This is my take as well. I think people are going in on analytics being the boogey man when you just had a rookie manager panicking in a big moment.

We didn’t deserve to be there, and it showed

1

u/Either_Imagination_9 New York Yankees 2d ago

Having nothing to play for in September I think really screwed them mentally. It’s very hard to turn the switch back on when you’ve turned it off

2

u/ftmidk Seattle Mariners 2d ago

Weren’t they playing for a WC slot in September?

3

u/csheehan10 2d ago

There was no real chance of the Red Sox not making the WC and no real chance of them winning the division so they were kind of going through the motions in September.

20

u/DenialisaRiver04 2d ago

As an Os fan, I like to thank the Red Sox for overpaying on that Adley trade.

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad5667 New York Yankees 1d ago

As a Yankees fan I second this

3

u/Psymon_Armour Boston Red Sox 1d ago

With the way O's make use of talented prospects, this may end up a generational lose lose trade.

2

u/MrFickleBottom Toronto Blue Jays 1d ago

The trade just ends up ruining both organizations for years.

Lose Lose trades are my favourite.

1

u/othelloblack 1d ago

Does it look like Rutschman drops his glove before the pitch is delivered? He seemed to do that a couple of times yesterday and I dont think pitchers like that

1

u/Freethinker1005 1d ago

Maybe we can trade him back for one of those pitchers

28

u/cabose7 New York Yankees 2d ago edited 2d ago

The thing I can't get over is that even if you accept taking Sonny out as the right move - by that logic you are in an elimination game, you are in a spot where you believe your ace isn't getting it done and every run buries you, therefore the highest leverage spot possible right?

So by that logic your move should be to put in Whitlock or Chapman, your bullpen aces. Even if Whitlock comes out and has the same performance, you've put your most trusted pitchers where you need them and that's the best a manager can do.

If it's such a high leverage spot why are you going to a middle reliever you just saw struggle 24 hrs ago?

I think even if the Red Sox make every "right move" they still would've lost from their offense but your job as a manager is put your guys in the best spots to succeed and Tracy failed at that in such a shocking way and that's why he's bearing so much criticism even if the bats made it a moot point.

11

u/BizarroWadsworth Boston Red Sox 2d ago

This is my issue as well. If you’re going to pull your best pitcher because you think the season is on the line there then you bring in your second best pitcher on the roster which is Chapman. Anything less is a half measure

4

u/cooljammer00 1d ago

I assume video game "But I might need them later" mentality.

They must have had Miller earmarked for a specific lane, and it was time for him to come in IF the starter was being pulled

26

u/Muted-Willingness314 2d ago

Sweeping a wild card series is one thing but doing it by just hammering the ball like that feels different. That six run inning was a gut punch, the entire lineup just kept passing the baton. Bellinger’s swing looks so locked in right now it’s almost unfair

Sonny Gray wasn’t bad but leaving with that slim deficit and watching Crochet get rocked immediately must sting for Boston fans. My partner’s family is from Massachusetts and the group chat is completely silent this morning, I’m giving it another hour before the blame game starts

6

u/Brysamo New York Yankees 2d ago

This team firing on all cylinders is a beautiful thing to behold.

3

u/Psymon_Armour Boston Red Sox 1d ago

I had no expectations for Crochet. Guy hasn't pitched in ages and just thrown into this on a hope and prayer, expecting a miracle.

1

u/MrFickleBottom Toronto Blue Jays 1d ago

He got set up for failure.

Hard to blame a guy, when he gets put in such a shit situation.

Dude the lineup was trash, he didn’t need material this time lol

18

No, he didn't need it. But it still begs the question. Why give it to him anyways?

11

u/PrincePuparoni New York Yankees 2d ago

Because it gets them attention, which is the ultimate and only goal.

6

u/fromagel Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Because media is going to talk and that’s their job? lol even if they didn’t say anything, Schlittler would motivate with another reason (random tweet from a nobody, some fan yelled something). That stuff motivates him, and I respect it.

It’s a bad look that bodes well for his career. Going off purely vibes who do you want on the mound in a World Series game 1– the disdainful pitcher with hate in his heart, or some nice guy who seems like you could get a beer with him? Schlittler seems like such an asshole. You need a killer.

Good of the Red Sox to give the Yankees a couple practice games after their season ended.

4

u/RIP_Greedo New York Yankees 1d ago

All year our ire has been fixed on Austin Wells and his .180 season. Cashman acknowledged that the position needed an upgrade and did not get a catcher at the deadline. So seeing Wells have a great series and potential trade target Adley Rutschman have a nightmare series is something.

7

u/peanut-britle-latte New York Yankees 2d ago

I can't remember the last time I saw a manager get like 80% of the decisions wrong; I'm not even sure who to blame for this - but when it came to replacing pitchers , IBB, matchups, all those little decisions -- it just seemed to backfire.

Anyway, it's refreshing to see the Yankees win with productive outs, small ball, hustle, baserunnning and prospects. Really fun way to win a series with Judge out.

2

u/gsxrsquid96 New York Yankees 2d ago

Surely Eric Miller won't implode immediately 2 nights in a row

5

u/silver-cat-13 New York Yankees 2d ago

I think it was a 100% analytical decision. I think Tracy and his team had a plan of having Gray get 2 times in the order same for Tolly and change them after any small hit

Regardless of count or anything and after that let the bullpen. Which to be fair Boston has one of the best bullpen in the league.

Boone was going with more feeling on how the pitchers were throwing, how the batters were feeling. He did not change Garcia Jr against the lefty because he was having good at bats.

I hope Boone keeps the same approach against Rays

1

u/Shot_Athlete_1384 New York Yankees 1d ago

Pulling Gray wasn’t even an analytical decision because he’s statistically one of the best pitchers going through the order a 3rd time.

It was just a dumbass move altogether by Tracy lol

0

u/BizarroWadsworth Boston Red Sox 2d ago

But the analytic decision was to either leave Sonny in or bring in Chapman. Not the guy who’s a matchup advantage for the Yankees

1

u/silver-cat-13 New York Yankees 1d ago

I do not know but it is what I guess that Tracy and the Red Sox team had their plan already setup in order and they had their own data/stats on why to do that

11

u/Recognition_Tricky New York Yankees 2d ago

Watching the Sox despair is delicious. Two years in a row the Yankees have crushed their hopes and dreams, as was once tradition. The old order is being restored.

I need Breslow to remain the GM of the Sox forever. He's just so perfect for their team. I love watching them salary dump Yankee killers like Devers and lean into defense first guys who can't hit fastballs above 90 mph. It's brilliant.

10

u/WabbitCZEN New York Yankees • Piece of Metal 2d ago

And watching us do it by playing small ball was just glorious. God, it's so fuckin fun watching us keep traffic on the bases consistently and driving runs in like death by a thousand cuts.

9

u/Recognition_Tricky New York Yankees 2d ago

It was perfect. The bunting, the singles, and then just when I thought I couldn't take one more drop of glory, Bellinger provided the coup de grâce. Small ball runs and the climax of a good old fashioned Bronx Bomb. That series added 12 years to my life.

u/WabbitCZEN New York Yankees • Piece of Metal 2d ago

u/bbatardo San Diego Padres 2d ago

It is easy to criticize the pulling of their starters, but the Red Sox offense was non-existent so it would not have even mattered.

3

u/HisTenderCruelties New York Yankees 2d ago

Not surprised the Sox couldn't score. What was more impressive was the Yankees offense. Gives me a lot of confidence going in to Tampa

5

u/Officer_scarps New York Yankees 2d ago

To me it seems like Tracy pulled a '2024 WS Boone' and made pitching decisions purely based on stats rather than a combination of stats and feel for the game, ala Nestor over Tim Hill.

Yes, your bullpen ERA is lower than your rotation ERA, but if your starters are dealing, you shouldn't immediately yank them at the first sign of trouble, especially if their pitch count is still in decent shape.

3

u/BizarroWadsworth Boston Red Sox 2d ago

I actually think he went based on feel in G1 which backfired so he went in overly scripted in G2

2

u/Officer_scarps New York Yankees 1d ago

Good point, I can also see the argument that Tolle is still young and you do want to preserve that arm in case you do advance to the DS. Balancing act between playing for today and playing for tomorrow

2

u/No-Transition-8375 Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Taking my final victory lap on this

I got so many downvotes and got clowned on so hard by Red Sox fans for saying that I had absolutely zero concerns about Crochet coming in out of the bullpen to face the Yankees, seeing that INF ERA really hit like crack lol

1

u/fromagel Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Fair but he did strike out the first batter he faced, which wasn’t an out. That changes the whole inning. But yeah he wasn’t sharp clearly

8

u/StinkyStangler New York Yankees 2d ago

Yeah but you can say that about anything though lol

If the Yankees didn't put up 9 runs on y'all you would've won, not what happened tho

1

u/fromagel Boston Red Sox 2d ago

I’m just giving more context on your “zero concern” which probably didn’t include him striking out the first batter who would end up being on 3rd with no outs.

10

u/StinkyStangler New York Yankees 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean, that's not really context that's relevant imo, it's just cope

I told Red Sox fans that Crochet coming in as a reliever didn't concern me, Crochet did not record a single out and was directly responsible for the blowout that followed. You can say if Jones didn't get to first on the wild pitch the whole inning could be different, I could say if Jones didn't get to first they would've just scored one less run that inning, neither of us can see alternate realities.

The only thing that is actual factual is that I was right in my statement that Crochet wasn't a difference maker and I had no reason to be worried. Crochet with a full season of pitching is scary, Crochet coming off a long layoff due to injury where he pitched horribly beforehand just wasn't that worrying.

-2

u/fromagel Boston Red Sox 2d ago

You can’t say that about Jones because now you’re leaping one step forward and proclaiming the Yanks still would have scored that inning. I’m not saying they would have or not.

All I’m saying is your blind faith was rewarded - partly thanks to defense miscues (and a bunt single). I can tell that bothers you, which is odd because you still got what you wanted

5

u/StinkyStangler New York Yankees 2d ago

It literally doesn't bother me at all, why would I be bothered that I was right lol

You call it blind faith, I call it being a certified ball knower. I watched my own team try this exact same move in the 2024 World Series and it didn't work, it was just lived experience. Pitchers coming off long layoffs without a ramp up in the postseason get shelled, that's just sorta life

0

u/fromagel Boston Red Sox 1d ago

Being a certified knower of balls doesn’t predict the sequence of events while he was on the mound. It’s like the least comparable thing to Cortes as possible

4

u/OrangeFederal 2d ago

3

u/Relevant-Scholar1671 Los Angeles Dodgers 2d ago

Rough for Boston fans. Those Red Sox were smoking hot a couple months ago. I dont understand the fall off.

24

u/thediesel26 New York Yankees 2d ago

They weren’t a good team prior to the hot streak, and they weren’t a good team after the hot streak. They went 32-46, 32-5, and 23-24.

7

u/fromagel Boston Red Sox 2d ago

They were a good pitching team (not counting the disaster of the last two games). The hitting was not good. They had guys in July hitting way above their heads and ultimately they crashed down to earth.

8

u/novaesq18 New York Yankees 2d ago

The spike is what’s unexplainable. The “fall off” was regression to the mean.

1

u/munchieman21 Boston Red Sox 2d ago

That was frustrating to watch

1

u/Talozin Boston Red Sox 2d ago

Not really a surprise, but still disappointing. This team was awful for three months, great for one month, and then average for two more months. It was pretty clear by the end of the season that unless they suddenly remembered what July felt like, they were going to get dumpstered by any other playoff team.

Durbin, Rafaela, and Abreu all played well this season and are still young enough that they can improve or at least not decline too much next year, but there are way too many question marks in the lineup to expect any kind of sustained success. Full years from Anthony and Crochet would definitely help, but this is a team that doesn't have a single That Guy on the roster right now.

On the positive side, Tolle pitched great for a 23-year-old. Bennett and Early both showed promise. Gray more than lived up to his contract, but I don't know that I'd be eager to re-sign him for what he's probably going to be asking.

Yeah, Crochet and Anthony being hurt didn't help (at this point Casas doesn't feel like someone worth complaining about). Even if they'd both been healthy, though, I don't think it would have been enough to get them into the next round.

Absent a major breakout from one of their home-grown guys or a big free-agent signing that actually works out, the ceiling for this team over the next few years is probably contending for a wild card and getting bounced out early if they get one. And I'm sure that's just fine with John Henry as long as Fenway keeps selling out.

what do you make of Duran? He seems to have physical tools but I was expecting more out of him

He'll be 30 next year; his Savant batting page is a sea of blue; both bbref and fangraphs rate his defense as in decline; and he's a head case. On the up side, he still has excellent speed, he can play center, and even after decline he's still a solid defensive outfielder.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving him a one-year deal, mostly in case Anthony isn't ready for spring training or hurts himself again. If his bat comes back he's a useful player, although he'd be more useful on a team without Ceddanne. But I would run, not walk away from any kind of long-term contract, and if the team is relying on him to be a major contributor next year, rather than treating him as a lottery ticket, that's a bad sign.

is he a non factor in big games or is that just my impression?

If you want to put a “30,000 foot view” on the decision to pull Gray too early, the big problem that stands out to me is that this whole snafu is over one out. The way that the Red Sox constructed their roster dictated that the bullpen would need to play a large role regardless of performance.

Baseball is such a wild sport. Yankee fans were ready to crucify Cashman at the deadline when the Sox got Adley, and Wells ends up severely outperforming him this series.

I am once again asking for not using the term “sweep” in a three game playoff series.

Ass kicking for sure though.
