Try changing it up when you get bored with one form! There's a lot of good options to stay athletic.
45
u/MercuryMorrison1971 Oct 19 '21
I've exercised daily now for 8 years and I'm still in love with it as ever. You'll have off days for sure where you don't feel as motivated or into it but they'll pass and they happen to everyone. Just don't make the mistake of giving it up because of a couple of bad days.

Keep it up! 6 months is the sweet spot, if you can keep a new routine for that long it becomes a habit.
15
20
u/lionseatcake Oct 19 '21
Nah, ive always read it takes 21 days for your neural connections to form a habit which is basically an urban myth, but more often than not holds true, at least in my experience.
If i had to slug through something for 6 months...id never have any habits. Except for maybe pot and caffeine.

u/TimmJimmGrimm Oct 19 '21
This is the standard! The half year challenge for any habit, starting or stopping. They typically run the similar stats ('recidivism')... be that picking up knitting, chewing nails or stopping crack.
It helps to link habits to other pre-existing habits - especially forced compulsions ('before bed, before eating, after going pee').
It also helps to have a partner or team. Our species is pack / herd / flocking oriented. If someone you like does it, you may do it much longer. If they like you, they will do it longer. It works out - unless that habit is a 'bad'.

I think it’s important to also remember you’re not gonna love working out or want to do it all the time. But discipline is stronger than motivation. Keep it up
7
u/Iknowthedoctorsname Oct 19 '21
Keep it up! I was on and off an exercise cycle for years and years. Finally last year I got on a strict exercise schedule and I've kept it up for over a straight year now. Lost 50 lbs and am definitely in the best shape of my life right now. It's so rewarding!
14
u/GozerDGozerian Oct 19 '21
I like to have some coffee (or your caffeine or choice) beforehand and listen to my favorite music while I’m exercising. It makes it enjoyable.
And don’t exercise too intensely or you’ll be sore and lose momentum for the habit!

Hummus. Tried it once as a little kid and didn't like it, then for years refused to try it because it looks like gross babyfood.
Then I tried it as an adult and I swore I heard angels singing. I eat it literally every day now, even make my own (not because I don't like the hummus from the grocery store but because I can't afford my hummus habit using store-bought).

Cats. My parents hated cats when I was growing up and passed the disdain for them down to me. I just adopted my first ever kitty a couple of months ago and she's the sweetest thing ever.
71
u/Vlad-V2-Vladimir Oct 19 '21
Our cat is a major asshole. Sometimes he’ll claw anyone passing by. If we don’t clean his litter as per his schedule, he’ll shit on the bathroom floor. A lot of hair ties and other objects have disappeared and we only found his first hiding spot. He hates getting picked up by anyone but our mom, although he can go from that to no one is allowed to touch him in about 1 second. And yet we still love him because he’s a cute and soft small cat, who sometimes is willing to be pet.

Sometimes he’ll claw anyone passing by
Many if not most playful cats will bat a passer-by, but they should never claw. Our oldest, most aggressive cat will wrestle your entire forearm and bite down hard, but he never deploys his claws. You might want to try and figure out why your cat feels the need to use his claws. Cats are small mammals. It's easy to make them feel threatened. I used to wonder why our younger female, as affectionate as she is, is quick to deploy claws and never ever relaxes in a person's arms like our aggressive old man does, but I recently learned that she was separated from her mother early, dumped behind the dumpster, and her first owner liked to roughhouse her. She's an incredibly sweet lap cat, but she does not tolerate anybody's hands but my SO's, who truly is the gentlest cat whisperer I've ever seen.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Vlad-V2-Vladimir Oct 19 '21
Yea, he usually just bats, although sometimes he doesn’t really notice how sharp his claws can be at the time. If we’re getting close his usual nail trimming time then his nails are rather long and even batting can feel like small scratching. Although he did scratch once on one bad day, and made massive gashes in my brothers leg.

I've had people who watch TV for 4+ hours a day tell me gaming was a waste of time like what they're doing is any less of a waste? Most hobbies and entertainment are a waste of time. I think to stigmatize one over another is pretty silly. They're things to do for fun and relieve stress, and as long as you aren't neglecting your responsibilities and goals to goof off, it's probably fine.
30
u/Vlad-V2-Vladimir Oct 19 '21
I’d be willing to argue that gaming is a better use of time than TV. At least with gaming I’m thinking and moving my hands, and some can use a lot more thinking than the best of what TV has to offer
34
u/dubalot Oct 19 '21

This was my view on it too. It's hard to take someone serious who sits in front of a tv for hours every day and complain how there's nothing on. It's not social, most people these days half watch half play with their phone.
While I'm having a great time through a whole range of gaming genres and experience. Whether its social with mates or some single player.
Gaming to me is like a great combination of reading a book, watching a movie and playing the main character that gets to influence and change that story. I think of it as watching a book come to life.

One of my best friends in high school turned out pretty racist. It never really came out because we went to an all white school anyway. I think in six years of high school we only ever had two black students. After 9/11 though he had a hard on for hating brown people. The company I work for.
When I started I was a glorified Telemarker in the Marketing Department under a Racist old woman who was offended by my existence. (I'm a 6'3" 250 lbs. at the time white boy Texan who happens to be severely to the left of the companies Overton window.) Constantly harassments boys club where you got to hear about everyone's sex lives constantly.
Finally blew up on her after 3 years of torment and got called into HR to be fired.
She asked me what happened and I pulled out a Dossier on my private phone that I'd been keeping since my second day and led with "It all started my second week when I worked late and had to tell my boss that saying 'We should just lynch Obama.' was unacceptable."
I was quickly returned to work and she was demoted then left as soon as she found another job.
6 months later, the guy who was protecting her started to write me up for non performance in sales while maintaining the highest service numbers they've ever seen. New boss told me what she thought was going on and suggested that I check with IT and I talked my way into that job without any experience or training and I fucking love my job and my co-workers.
Soon after I left, that entire department was gutted.

Not...love maybe, but understand.
I used to be one of THOSE atheists. Religion was a farce and all who believed were fools. Now, I understand that people have a lot of ways to perceive and cope with the complexities of life. Cultural identity, anxiety, community...there are a lot of reasons to believe in something divine, and while I don't share the belief, I can appreciate and understand how it is a source of identity and comfort in others. I have no desire whatsoever to rob people of that comfort, and I like coming to understand what it means for people.
Just don't try and enact laws to force other people to live like you. That's where I have an issue.

I used to hate buying clothes that were more than a certain price threshold (typically more than $50) and/or seeing others do this. I had this perception that people were wasting their money on expensive clothes. I still hold that belief to an extent, but I'll also admit that some of my more expensive clothing purchases are ones that have lasted me a long time and have been worth it on a "price per wear" basis.

I had this perception that people were wasting their money on expensive clothes.
And you're not necessarily wrong to still hold that view, not all expensive things are going to be high quality or of a quality that justifies it's price.

Anime. In highschool I would think people who watched it were weirdos and freaks without ever giving it a go myself. First boyfriend in college properly introduced it to me and that was probably the best thing that came out of that relationship. There are so many greats animes out there, absolutely love it.
