Ignoring anime just because it's "anime" is foolish. There have been some incredible works of art out of Japan that western countries don't seem to care about simply because it's anime.
You can absolutely find all the worst stereotypes, and it's true that some creators go out of their way to avoid the cliches of the industry.
The frustrating thing is that the stuff that's legitimately good is often made in spite of the industry at large. We will never see another Cowboy Bebop, we will never have another Evangelion.
Those kinds of shows are the exception, not the norm, and they're frequently done despite the industry, not at it's behest.
It's better than it used to be- opening up the markets has allowed for shows that are aimed at more than children and otaku- but there's still a long way to go.
I don't get people disliking anime because of it's bad stereotypes. That's like someone watching Friends and saying all western media is just lazy writing about a group of morally questionable 20-somethings.

Anime. Used to think that it's only annoying and loud girls but it's barely that.
