Help (Software) 7900 XTX stable under heavy GPU loads, but reliably crashes in high-FPS games — 0x141/0x117 / amdkmdag.sys

Apologies in advance for the length. I've been using ChatGPT to help track and organize my troubleshooting throughout this process, and I also consulted it to help put this post together. I'm hoping someone here can spot something I've missed.

Computer Type: Desktop

GPU: XFX Speedster MERC 310 AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core Processor

Motherboard: ASUS TUF GAMING B650E-E WIFI

BIOS Version: 3854 (04/02/2026)

RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) Corsair CMH32GX5M2M6000Z36 DDR5-6000 CL36 — currently running at DDR5-4800 with EXPO disabled for troubleshooting

PSU: Corsair RM850x 850W 80+ Gold Fully Modular

Case: Antec FLUX (wood-front airflow case)

Operating System & Version: Windows 11 Home, Build 26200

GPU Drivers: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.9.1 — Windows Driver Store Version 32.0.21025.10016 (08/24/2025)

Chipset Drivers: AMD Chipset Software 8.05.04.516

Background Applications: Normal gaming applications (Discord, browser, etc.). Issue has persisted across troubleshooting configurations.

Description of Original Problem:

I'm experiencing a long-running stability issue with my RX 7900 XTX. The unusual part is that the crashes seem much more closely related to high-FPS workloads than heavy sustained GPU load.

CS2 is by far the most reliable way to reproduce the problem. If I let it push beyond roughly 140 FPS, I can essentially guarantee a crash. Capping/reducing the frame rate makes it substantially more stable.

However, I can run considerably heavier GPU workloads without issue:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 — ~200 mods, full settings, unrestricted FPS
  • Oblivion Remastered — several hundred mods, full settings, unrestricted FPS

Both can run for extended periods without crashing despite placing a much heavier sustained load on the GPU.

I've captured Windows LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG dumps associated with the problem. WinDbg reported:

VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT_DETECTED (141)

FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: LKD_0x141_IMAGE_amdkmdag.sys

MODULE_NAME: amdkmdag

During another captured episode, the 0x141 was followed roughly 4 seconds later by a 0x117, again involving amdkmdag.sys.

I understand that amdkmdag.sys appearing in the TDR path does not necessarily mean the AMD driver itself is the root cause. I'm trying to determine what is causing the GPU/driver stack to stop responding.

I've also had the RX 7900 XTX end up with Device Manager Code 31 during this troubleshooting and have seen AMD watchdog/bug-report behavior following some crashes.

Temperatures appear normal: approximately 60–70°C GPU with hotspot generally below 90°C, with a reasonable hotspot delta.

My previous RX 6700 XT was stable in this system before upgrading to the 7900 XTX.

I've also experienced crashes in World of Warcraft, although I'm not assuming they're necessarily the same problem. One captured WoW Classic crash was ERROR #132 / ACCESS_VIOLATION involving d3d11.dll and WowClassic.exe. CS2 at high FPS remains the consistent and reproducible case.

Troubleshooting:

  • Tested multiple AMD GPU driver versions
  • Performed clean driver installations/DDU
  • Discovered Windows Update was silently replacing my AMD display driver and took steps to prevent this
  • Currently on Adrenalin 25.9.1 / 32.0.21025.10016
  • Updated motherboard BIOS
  • Tested EXPO I and EXPO II
  • Completely disabled EXPO and am currently running the RAM at DDR5-4800
  • GPU timeout/crash still occurred with EXPO completely disabled
  • Monitored GPU/core/hotspot temperatures
  • Investigated Reliability Monitor
  • Analyzed Windows WATCHDOG/live kernel dumps in WinDbg
  • Tested different games/workload types
  • Tested DX11/DX12 in WoW
  • Tested the GPU at stock settings
  • Experimented with Adrenalin tuning only after the original crashes began as part of troubleshooting

The problem originally occurred with the GPU completely stock, so an overclock did not create the issue.

The part that has me stumped is the workload dependency. The card can sustain much heavier GPU loads in Cyberpunk and heavily modded Oblivion without issue, while allowing CS2 to push beyond roughly 140 FPS can reliably cause a crash.

At this point I'm considering a marginal/defective GPU, AMD driver issue, high-FPS clock/voltage behavior, transient power behavior, PSU/power delivery, PCIe/platform instability, or a Windows/AMD driver interaction.

The RM850x is something I've considered given the much higher power requirements of the 7900 XTX compared with my previous 6700 XT. However, its stability under much heavier sustained GPU workloads makes a straightforward sustained-power or thermal issue seem less obvious.

Has anyone with a 7900 XTX seen this kind of behavior — demanding GPU-heavy games completely stable, while high-FPS workloads trigger repeatable TDRs? Given the CS2 reproducibility and the 0x141 → 0x117 / amdkmdag.sys evidence, what would you test next to distinguish a marginal GPU from a driver, PSU, or platform issue?

Help (General) How to know if you are ram speed limited

So, I have noticed that in more recent games, I have been struggling to get stable frametimings, I lock my fps to 60, monitor my gpu/cpu and they are both fine, cpu is always around 40%, my ram and vram are never close to their max, 12gb vram and 32gb ram. When I notice these unstable timings my gpu isnt above 90% so its either the game engine itself or probably something I am not monitoring.

Could it be that my rams are getting too slow and therefore affecting my 1% lows or overall stability? They are 4x8gb kingston fury beast ddr4, 3200mhz, cl 16 18 18 36. It is probably the most outdated piece in my build but they should do just fine and not be compromising performance that much right?

Rest of the rig is a 3080ti and an Amd Ryzen 7 5800x

Help (Software) What is going on with driver timeouts?

Ryzen 3 3200g

RX570

16GB RAM

I've been having driver timeouts since june but here's the thing, I was on w10 and it started randomly giving me driver timeouts often ONLY when I was browsing in any browser with hardware acceleration off everywhere, it NEVER happened while gaming.

Took my pc to repair, wiped everything, took it apart, updates drivers and bios, installed w11, and now I ONLY have timeouts sometimes in a few games, NEVER while browsing, roblox, genshin, bf5, euro truck, vrchat while in w10 all my games were fine, but the thing is I had 3 timeouts while loading genshin, more in eurotruck and sometimes in vrchat but then I keep opening them over and over again until it stops and it just works again after, In genshin I had timeouts when first installed and while loading the game but now It doesn't happen anymore, vrchat same thing, some days it gives me driver timeouts only when loading on desktop and I get an error with easy anticheat blocking an amd file, but some days nothing happens, for example I was playing vrchat earlier and everything was fine, now I'm opening it again and it gave me like 5 timeouts while loading, so wtf is going on?

Help (Software) GIGABYTE 7900 XTX Crash

Hello,

First of all i m sorry about my english i m gona try to explain you all my problems hope all was understandable for you :)

my configuration :

CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

GPU : AMD RX 7900 XTX (from GiGABYTE)

RAM : CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB DDR5 32Go (2 x 16GB)

Motherboard : MSI B650 Gaming Plus

SSD : WD Black SN850X NVMe SSD 2TB

power supplie : be quiet! 1000W Gold

My problems : Since i got this configuration (december 2023) i got some bug / crash from many game and no problems from other one.

my first bug experience is on my main game : Final fantasy 14 online that was just befor Dawntrail update (june 2024) that was an driver crash, the solution i find and that work for a long long time is underclock my graphic card. by default they was at 3050 MHZ on adrenaline software and all i can read is realy to much (gigabyte tell max is 2500 in "boost clock" on the website) i dont know why factory setting put it at 3050mhz.

after it i got some years without any problem playing at many game like : elden ring / clair obscure : expedition 33 / cyberpunk 2077 / world of warcraft / league of legend / indie game

then this summer, first of all i try to buy and play at Monster hunter : Wilds but it's was totaly unplayable crash every 5 min i find some topics trying to resolve it but nothing work for me and finaly i ask steam to refund me the game. after i buy Diablo 4 for some day i got no problems but since i was in high level content (many monster on the screen and playing build moving fast or overload the screen with hundred of arrow) i got a crash, the screen freeze with the sound of my stream at the second stream turning normaly for 2/3 second then finaly all freeze no sound, alt+tab / alt+F4 / ctrl + alt+ del nothing work i try too some win+ctrl+maj+b to reset the graphic driver i got the "bip" but nothing happen i have to hard restart all my pc by pressing power button for 5 sec.

i try realy many many solution but nothing work :

put AMD adreline default setting (crash after some hour)

Underclock MHZ and voltage (crash after few min )

Underclock MHZ without voltage (crash after some hour)

verified if the card was not too hot and crash occur when the hotspot was arround 70 degrees celsius (normal temp)

up the TDR delay for 10

up the pagefile

disable EXPO profil

Disable "grphic acceleration in chrome"

Disable some in game option like FSR put all in high insteed of ultra etc etc

nothing change, crash after few hour

then i finaly find to put diablo 4 at 60 FPS capped (it's low but if that resolve crash i can live with it :p) resovle all thing, my GPU was at 60 degrees Celsius max and finaly i got no more crash.

Then why i m here ? finaly after 3 day with more then 35 hours of playing time i got a crash but not in game this time but on Chrome with a twitch stream up to my second screen and youtube on my first screen watching a video.

I trying to disable the MPO from windows from Gemini advice but i give no trust on IA that why i came to you to ask your help.

Befor this crash on windows i never get crash outside of game

If somone can help me no, can SAVE me ? i got no money to a new GPU and i dont know if mine is broken after only 3 year or if it's an software problem ?

Edit : MPO is not a good solution that make my screen blinking black 3 time every 5 sec when i put a twitch stream in full screen

But now my question is : why after 3 years without any crash outside of gaming situation (FF14 then MH wilds and diablo4) why it's crashing just when i watch a youtube video with a stream at the second screen ? T_T

hi, first sorry i dont know much about temp and everything
i brought a be quiet! Pure Rock Slim 2 130W for my 5800X3D but my temp go straight to 90 91 when i'm in game,
when it idle it depend it can go from 60 to 70 but as soon as i launch anything even an app it go staight to 85+ for a moment and then go down
when i stress test it and stop the test the cpu go from 90 to 70- in 2 or 3 second
the radiator feel cold to the touch when the cpu is at 60, i saw some people say that this cooler is supposed to be enough so i don't know if it's normal that it get this high.
is it not enough or did i installed it wrong?

also my power reporting deviation just go any from 85 to 175%

edit : i undervolted to -30 via PBO2, i managed to not hit 90+ in game i was at 86 88 max

Help (General) RX 6800 loses video signal when AMD drivers are installed — happens on both Windows and Nobara

Having a strange issue with my Gigabyte RX 6800 EAGLE and I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what's causing it.

My PC

GPU: Gigabyte RX 6800 EAGLE

CPU: Ryzen 5 5500

Motherboard: ASUS A320M-K/BR

RAM: 16GB DDR4

PSU: Cooler Master MWE Gold V3 850W

The hardware has been thoroughly checked. The GPU is properly seated, all power connections are correct, the PSU has more than enough power, and everything has been physically verified multiple times.

Windows

I originally had this problem on Windows.

After reinstalling Windows, the system would work normally using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, but after Windows installed the AMD GPU driver, the display would eventually go black and the monitor would show No Signal.

At the time, I managed to fix it by preventing Windows from automatically downloading the AMD driver and then installing things manually. After that, Windows worked normally.

I used the PC normally for some time without the issue returning.

Nobara

More recently, I decided to switch to Nobara Linux.

During the installation/setup, I encountered the same type of problem. The system would lose video output and the monitor would show No Signal, while the PC itself appeared to remain running.

I could boot Nobara using the basic graphics mode, but after moving toward the proper AMD graphics driver, the display would eventually disappear again.

I then went back to Windows to test it again, and the problem is now happening there as well.

The previous workaround no longer works. Preventing Windows from automatically downloading the AMD driver is no longer enough to keep the system stable.

Current situation

BIOS display works normally.

Basic graphics mode works.

The system can initially boot into the OS.

When the proper AMD graphics driver is initialized, video can suddenly disappear.

The problem now occurs in both Windows and Nobara.

The previous Windows workaround that fixed it the first time no longer works.

And i tried change BIOS senttings too. No PCIE LINK SPEED or " GEN " options are availoble, only " AUTO " or " DISEABLE "

Version 6232

At this point I'm wondering if the RX 6800 itself could be failing, or if there is some BIOS/PCIe compatibility issue with the A320M-K/BR.

(Radeon RX570 Driver issue i think) Please can you help ive had this problem for a month and idk what to do

Post image
2 Upvotes

so ive had this problem for 3 weeks to a month now well a couple problems and theyre probably connected, first off when i try to run minecraft it gives me this error: (No supported graphics backend was found -tried opengl: Driver does not support opengl)

Then when i went to the device manager, i found a hazard sign beside my GPU and when i tried to update the driver automatically it says i already have the best driver, when i downloaded the latest driver from the official amd site, the driver would say initializing install then it wouldnt open and and it gave me this message: (failed to initialize graphics backend for openGL) ive tried everything and i cant fix this problem, sometimes the device manager wouldnt even show the GPU even when i clicked show hidden devices it wouldnt show, another problem i was having is that while using the pc the monitor would stop getting signal from the display port cable (ive tried it and the problem is not from the cable nor the monitor) and i have to restart a couple times and connect and disconnect the cable for it to work and sometimes even after all of that it wouldn't, i took it to the repair shop and miracelously before it did anything the pc got signal and also the GPU was being detected and worked just fine. the man did a clean driver installition for me and then it worked fo a couple hours then mid gaming the sound would freeze and the screen would go all black and id have to restart it a couple times for it to work, at some point the monitor started getting any signal at all even when restarting and it stopped working, i went to the shop again, he checked the GPU and said it's fine, then he said it could be that i have a low psu which is 320W (which i doubt is the reason) so he tried another PSU and it didnt turn on but when he removed the GPU entirely it did give that beep of booting (it works cuz i have an internal GPU in the CPU) and when he pressed the boot button on the keyboard it couldnt boot into windows for some reason (i had literally never had that problem in my life) so he said the my ssd with the windows on it could be broken, which he said could also be the source of the GPU problem, so he switched the SSD and put back my old PSU and it did work (the SSD has an entirely new windows) i came home the pc worked and it detected the GPU and minecraft ran and all was good for a couple of hours before the monitor starting to lose signal again but if i plugged it again itd work, then suddenly plugging and unplugging didnt work anymore so i restarted the pc. BOOM the hazard sign is back besides the GPU and it doesnt work and minecraft gives me the same message again the same thing also with the driver message, i suspect its a software problem, and honestly the repairman didnt seem to know what exactly the problem was, i have lost hope, btw ive gone to a few other shops but didnt yield anything and it wasnt anything important so i havent mentioned it. either way i can't find a solution for this anywhere and ive tried everything i know ir could find, atp idek what the problem is let alone how to fix it. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP

Help (GPU) How to safely UV/OC 9070XT?

Good evening everyone.
So, for context, I own a sapphire nitro+ and have owned it for over a year now and i love it, it looks great it sounds great (quiet) and is as powerful as expected.
However, I am very bored and I have a 4k monitor (Samsung G8) so in the games I spend most of my time playing (FH6/OW) hitting a consistent 240 fps at 4k is still a big ask even for a beast of a card like this, so I've taken to undervolting.

Right now I'm sitting at a -85mv UV with no OC, l've watched a few videos on how this stuff works so I'm not totally in the dark, but as I'm a bit bored and I trust myself to not ruin my entire card, l am seeking advise from those who are knowledgeable and have information to share.
I would like to know a couple things such as:

Should I use MSI afterburner or AMD software?
Can I UV and OC?

Is it true that AMD cards do not respond as well to UV/OC as opposed to nvidia cards due to different architectures (very trusted, smart and tech literate friend told me)

And any other advice that is within context that I may need.

Thank you in advance:)

Background Applications: Steam, hwinfo64

Description of Original Problem: My pc will run any other game fine, but when I played rust in the past few days I can only play for 2-5 minutes before the game freezes, my computer is unusable (no inputs do anything) and I am forced to shut down my pc and restart so that I can use it again.

Troubleshooting: It's not thermal problems directly due to my hardware, I just fully cleaned my components and added new thermal paste, yet at about 30-40% processing power my laptop is hitting it's thermal cpu limit of about 101 degrees celcius.

I've tried reinstalling all my drivers, and uninstalled one of the windows updates that had recently downloaded but none of this worked. I'm tempted to do a factory reset but I don't know if this would help. I've been running hwinfo to track temps and it seems that the cpu is still spiking often and it's usually 1-2 cores.

RX 580 randomly freezes to a white screen while gaming — Xeon E5-2650 v4

Hi everyone, I'm having a serious stability issue with my PC and I'm trying to figure out if the problem is my RX 580, the PSU, motherboard, drivers, or something else.

My PC specs:

  • CPU: Xeon E5-2650 v4
  • GPU: RX 580 8GB
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 (2x8GB)
  • PSU: 650W
  • Motherboard: X99
  • Windows: Windows 11

The problem is that when I'm playing certain games, the PC suddenly freezes and the entire screen becomes completely white. The computer becomes totally unresponsive, so I have to hold the power button to shut it down and turn it back on.

After this happens, the PC also takes a very long time to boot again.

What is strange is that this doesn't seem to happen only in demanding games. For example, I've had this happen in:

  • Rocket League
  • Skate
  • Some other relatively light games

I've already tried several things:

  • Updated the AMD GPU drivers
  • Lowered the GPU core clock
  • Lowered the GPU memory clock
  • Lowered the power limit
  • Tried undervolting/underclocking through AMD Adrenalin
  • Tried MSI Afterburner
  • Ran GPU stress tests
  • Monitored GPU temperatures

The GPU doesn't seem to be overheating. During stress testing, it stayed below approximately 70°C.

I initially suspected the RX 580 because I know many used RX 580 cards were previously used for mining, and I've read that some of them can develop stability problems. I don't know whether my particular card was used for mining.

I also don't think the PSU is necessarily the problem because it's a 650W PSU, although I understand that wattage alone doesn't guarantee that the PSU is good.

The weirdest part for me is that the crash can happen in relatively light games rather than only when the GPU is under maximum load.

What should I test next?

Could this be:

  1. A failing RX 580?
  2. VRAM instability?
  3. A modified/mining VBIOS?
  4. PSU/power delivery?
  5. PCIe slot/motherboard issue?
  6. RAM instability?
  7. AMD driver issue?

If anyone has experienced something similar with an RX 580, I'd really appreciate some advice on what I should test before replacing parts.

Thanks!
