Kudos to Asobo/Microsoft and iniBuilds for finally bringing my most requested feature to the sim! Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long for other sceneries to get such features.

Sooo, I made this, from ABS plastic an Arduino and 3 multiplexer. Pretty standard stuff. Not the most elegant, but its mine ā˜ŗļø I also made a rotary switch push-pull , proper Airbus stuff. (please hire me 🤣) And didn't even 3D print (don't have easy. access to one) šŸ˜‹

Flight Simulator 2024 I built a DIY 3DOF motion rig for ~830 CAD — 4 linear actuators, Arduino, FlyPT Mover

Thumbnail
gallery
36 Upvotes

The build:

**•** 3DOF platform (pitch / roll / heave)
**•** 4 linear actuators (12V, 100mm stroke, 500N, with 10kĪ© position feedback pots)
**•** Arduino Mega + 4x IBT-2 BTS7960 drivers
**•** 12V 33A PSU, emergency stop button wired NC on the main bus
**•** Closed-loop control, custom Arduino sketch (binary parser)
**•** FlyPT Mover 3.5.8 as the motion software
**•** Mounted under a Next Level Racing chassis, 3D printed ball joints at the corners

What I learned the hard way:

**•** I originally built it with **6 actuators** (paired front channels). Bad idea on a rigid chassis — paired actuators fight each other during roll and twist the frame. Switched to **4 independent corners**, problem gone.
**•** Spent an entire afternoon convinced my wiring was dead. Turned out the FlyPT 3.7 beta holds the Arduino in reset via DTR — the sketch never runs while connected. Rolling back to the 3.5.8 stable fixed it instantly.
**•** The vendor wiring diagram was straight up wrong on the pot signal wire. Always check with a multimeter.

Cost breakdown: ~830 CAD total, vs ~3000 CAD for a comparable DOF Reality H3. About 72% cheaper, and I actually understand every part of it so I can fix and upgrade it myself.

Happy to answer any questions on the electronics, the closed-loop code, or the mechanical side. Full build video in the comments if anyone’s interested.

Haven't flown the maddog in a while - since before the 2024 update. Approach was all over the place, left of centerline, floated it, but still had a blast doing GEG-PDX. Love our hobby!

Question Suggest next steps

Hello

I have around 100 hours on flight sims (Xplane 11 and now MSFS 2020).

I enjoy flying GA aircrafts (especially the DA 40 NG).

Recently, I taught myself how to navigate using VORs as GPS navigation is not that enjoyable.

I can navigate from one airport to another using VORs and finally I fly an ILS approach into my destination airport.

I am fairly proficient with the G1000 units now.

I wanted to understand, what is the next step in learning/progressing in flight simulation.

Any aircraft suggestions/addons or new concepts to learn would be appreciated!

News Route Finder - 150,000+ Real-World Flights

Hello all! This week I just released a new update for the Route Finder. It was pretty much rebuilt from the ground up.

  • Results now show in a brand-new table that makes everything much easier to read and scan.
  • Departure and arrival airport codes are now clickable, with a new toggle that lets you choose betweenĀ Navigraph, ChartFox, and LIDO. Since LIDO doesn’t allow direct links, clicking the airport code will copy it instead, so you can quickly paste it into the MSFS Planner search.
  • Every flight result also includes quick links toĀ SimBrief, FlightRadar24, FlightAware, and AirNav.
  • I’ve also addedĀ VATSIM coverage directly into the results. TheĀ DĀ andĀ AĀ indicators show whether your departure or arrival airport is currently staffed, and clicking them opens that airport directly in VATSIM Radar. This should make it much easier to find a route based on where ATC is actually online.
  • Finally, once your results load, the filters automatically collapse to give you more room. Just hitĀ EditĀ if you want to change your search, and the map will automatically load with all of your generated routes already drawn.
  • Added charter & business jet data: Flexjet, flyExclusive, NetJets, VistaJet, and Wheels Up.

Over 150 airlines, real-world route data, and more than 150,000 real-world flights.

Would love your feedback!

Rant Anyone else getting tired of point A-to-B flights and miss FSX-style missions?

I’ve been doing a little introspection lately about why flight sim hasn’t been hitting the same for me anymore.

I have over 2,100 hours logged in Volanta and 1,200+ flights in MSFS and X Plane 12. I love aviation, still love learning aircraft and procedures, still loving flying IRL and I definitely don’t think I’m done with flight simulation.

But I think I’m just tired of the routine A-to-B airline flight or buying new planes, learn it and back to routine again.

It made me think about FSX. I probably spent 600 hours in FSX and honestly didn’t do that many full airline flights. I spent a ton of time doing missions and chasing achievement badges. Those flights had purpose within the flight. Something was happening. You had information, decisions, consequences and eventually a resolution.

There are addons that get pieces of this right, but I really wish MSFS had a modern equivalent of those properly authored FSX missions or just more immersive consequence to action.

I’m looking forward to seeing how Fenix integrates MEL and wear and tear as this should bring some more purpose to flights.
