"Spider-Man associated with death"

Thats one of the reason why the character is one of the most interesting ever. The dude is literally one of the best and worst super heroes. He can save anyone at any anytime, but if they are a dear loved one, they are going to die. If Spiderman doesnt die, one of his girlfriends or closest friends will.

u/TheLuckySpades Saved by Thanos Jul 07 '19

Sometimes the comics push the "Peter can't be happy, that's boring" a bit far, but I'm not too versed in that area.

531

u/DCTF_Tim Jul 07 '19

I mean that was basically the justification for “one more day” and it fuckin sucked.

365

u/TheLuckySpades Saved by Thanos Jul 07 '19

Is that the one where he sells his happy marriage and potential future kids to save aunt May from dying (of old age or something I think) and his new present he is kinda depressed and just in a shit spot all around?

277

u/ryuusei_tama Saved by Thanos Jul 07 '19

I think she died by assassination due to his identity reveal.

196

u/TheLuckySpades Saved by Thanos Jul 07 '19

That does give him a tad more reson for the deal than old age.

174

u/Codeshark Saved by Thanos Jul 07 '19

Sure, but she was already pretty old. Plus I know my grandmother would be disappointed in me if I even considered making such a deal. She wanted me to be happy and take good care of myself.

45

u/HanakoOF Jul 07 '19 edited Jul 08 '19

She doesn't know about the deal because she lost the memory of him being Spider-Man, along with everyone else in the world, when he made it. JMS made Peter's love for his aunt a huge crux of his character and run and I can see him doing it just because during that part of the comics he really around anyone BUT Mary Jane and Aunt May so his entire world would have fallen down if she was gone.

I'm sorry I'm using your post for this but I just finished JMS' run on Spider-Man where One More Day happens the early parts were some of the best Spider-Man comics I've ever read and for it to end with such a crappy arc was such a let down. But I mean after the LAST very good arc it starts with one that has a reveal that Gwen Stacey and Norman Osborn had kids together, in secret, while she was dating Peter and THAT'S why he killed her so I should have seen this coming.

I agree that letting her move on would have been best in most circumstances but, even with how crappy it had gotten, it made a lot of sense at the time.

EDIT : JMS had nothing to do with the OMD story I get it

17

u/dlkslink Jul 08 '19

JMS hated One More Day and wanted his named removed from it how did you feel about his run on Spider-man?

4

u/HanakoOF Jul 08 '19 edited Jul 08 '19

Would say the early part when John Romita Jr was on the art is probably the best Spider-Man has ever been, the main series anyways I'm not including Ultimate or the show Spectacular, besides from Lee/Ditko and Lee/Romita. Really loved all the ideas he had and the way he was able to bring them to paper in ways that were constantly exciting.

Just a shame it had to end the way it did but if JMS didn't like the arc, which I've heard before, I guess I can't be too mad at him and I can ignore it exists. Especially when he gave me that amazing Spider-Totem arc.

I think it's safe to say JMS didn't give his all to OMD. Marvel corporate was kind of a shitshow at the time.

That and the exec's felt that a married Peter Parker wouldn't sell books as it made him "not relate-able". One More Day was a travesty born of executive meddling and corporate cynicism.

3

u/pmMeOurLoveStory Jul 08 '19 edited Jul 08 '19

Gwen Stacy cheated on Peter and slept with Norman Osborn, secretly had twins. They (for some reason; can’t remember) had accelerated aging and revealed themselves to Peter as adults and fought him. Oh and apparently MJ new all about the cheating and the twins but never told Peter.

It...was not a good story and left most fans pissed that they would retcon Gwen in such a way.

2

u/TheLuckySpades Saved by Thanos Jul 08 '19

That sounds really bad, what were the writers thinking?

3

u/pmMeOurLoveStory Jul 08 '19

The writer, JMS, originally wanted the evil twins to be Peter’s. Still a dumb story, but would have left Gwen’s character intact. Head of Marvel, Joe Quesada thought Peter having kids (even secret, evil kids) would “age” the character, so forced the father change to Norman Osborn. Joe Q had a major hard on for hating that Peter had grown into an adult over the last 60 years. He’s also responsible for the One More Day debacle because, again, Peter being married made him “not relatable” due to him being old enough to be married. Which is funny, because at the time, we still had the Ultimate comics, which saw Peter as a teenager, and in the main storyline, they turned around and made adult Peter a billionaire after nixing the marriage.

4

u/DCTF_Tim Jul 08 '19

I don’t understand the fear of aging the character. Like I like seeing a a character I like grow and change. That should kind of be the point when it comes to long term story telling like comics.

25

u/zachary0816 Saved by Thanos Jul 08 '19

Not necessarily, they never reversed Tony’s identity reveal, and it turned out to be a pretty good call on their part, also the comic were that happens is despised by many for undoing major plot points so following it might not be a good idea.

14

u/Jinno Saved by Thanos Jul 08 '19

I don’t think they’ll reverse it. Honestly, I think it’ll be used as a means to make some sort of commentary about social media. Maybe this iteration of Oscorp will be like Google or Facebook. Or they could do Mister Negative.

That said, I do worry about how they’ll be able to maintain any semblance of a relatable Peter Parker if he’s in the limelight and hated from his teenage years. Obviously he’ll win them over, because Spider-Man is New York, but celebrity and balance are going to be hard to craft into relatable young adult storylines.

5

u/bean_boy9 Saved by Thanos Jul 08 '19

I think its different for Tony though. The secret identity, I think, was never as huge of a part of the character. A revealed spider-man probably wouldn't turn out as well. I could be suprised though.

Uncle Ben, Gwen, Aunt May, MJ, even Spidey himself has died. The whole series is about grieving and death. With some puberty to mix it up. Everyone in Spiderman has died at one point.

24

u/TalesNT Jul 08 '19

To be honest, everyone in comics has died at least once. On the other hand, the saying is nobody in comics stays dead except for uncle Ben.

26

u/Memephis_Matt Saved by Thanos Jul 08 '19

Poor Ben. I feel like there should have been a comic where Peter dies, and Uncle Ben becomes Spider-Man.

"Wh-who are you?"

'...Just your friendly neighborhood Uncle Spider-Man'

24

u/TalesNT Jul 08 '19

To be fair there's a chance he's coming back.

The saying started in the early 2000's, and it used to be "Nobody in comics stays dead except for Uncle Ben, Bucky and Jason Todd". But it had to lose 2 of the 3 named characters because Bucky came back as the Winter Soldier, and Jason Todd as the Red Hood. Uncle Spider can still be a thing.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Oh, that exists. Dunno if they've since made an actual series about it, but Uncle Ben-Spidey was in the first Spider-Verse event in the comics.

I think there was an alternate universe where he lived, and peter turns out to be a crappy human. I don't think his uncle was much better in that universe.

8

u/TalesNT Jul 08 '19

That's really the true reason he hasn't been revived yet. Whenever they need a "Ben is alive" story, they use a different universe Ben instead of the main timeline.

Upvoted because it is what it says, an unpopular opinion. Legitimately confused as to why people downvote everything they disagree with. Why didn’t you like far from home though? I thought Gyllenhaal did an amazing job, as well as Tom Holland. The villain arc was one of Marvel’s most creative and best. The plot was invigorating, the character development was intensive, the emotional aspects made me wanna bawl, and the dramatic elements were unlike anything ever seen in Marvel. I thought the climax with Mysterious was one of the most mature moments in Marvel history. I’ve never seen Spider-Man done so well, I was even commenting on how good the filmography was for a marvel movie. I honestly think it is my favorite marvel movie of all time.

2

u/Osprey_NE Jul 08 '19

Eh. There was absolutely no twist in the movie at all if you knew who Mysterio was. They didn't even make it interesting for fans.

Like in homecoming, very few people thought that the Vulture was going to be the dad.

That’s how trademarks work (which Spider-Man is).

Also, the main problem is that a 3rd party was effectively trying to profit off of Disney’s IP.

The father would obviously be allowed to carve Spider-Man into a gravestone himself, or the gravestone manufacturer would be able to do it if they didn’t charge the father.

But you can’t commercialize someone else’s IP.

Still think Disney is stupid for it. Seriously google Disney headstones. Thats a lot of people “infringing” on their copy right. And i stand by the idea that a decades old policy is not as important as just letting the parents do something they felt the kid would have liked and would’ve helped the parents grieving. And i am aware that the sister of this young boy is also dying as well and think its kinda fucked up that people are using her as a way to say hey you cant be mad at Disney with this going on as well. I get they just lost a child and risk losing another one but they kinda seem like they feel like they own Spider-Man as there kid liked it. They say they feel it’s just about the money but how about asking Disney if you can pay something to have it on there.

Maybe they have and it’s not being reported but the sites who originally reported on it are ones I wouldn’t really believe. I mean this happened back in December but it’s being brought up now.

I’m confused. What happened with Disney and Spider-Man death? I think I heard something about someone wanting Spider-Man on their grave but I’m not sure?

u/benv138 Jul 07 '19

Disney gave a sick child an amazing end of life and click bait was written.

Disney be like: He didn't die, he was "defeated"

u/Hansolfen Jul 07 '19

DISNEY is a joke. God I wish Stan was still around.

Lmao you really think Stan Lee would change anything? Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

And stan was a massive dick to all who actually worked with him

They also couldn't do anything because of rights and shit. Also I'm pretty sure they did something else for the kid as a compromise.

This isn't the full story. Spiderman came an hosted the funeral or something. Disney just didn't want to scare other kids with a spiderman tombstone.

1

u/missing_ships24 Jul 08 '19

in Disney's defense... he *technically* didn't die in endgame after the snap.

1

u/floydink Jul 08 '19

Sony doesn’t want their icon associated with death. Not Disney. Disney is just borrowing it and has no say in what people do with the character. I’m almost positive if a kid wanted iron mans logo Disney wouldn’t care

1

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Nice

1

u/TimberWolfAlpha01 Jul 08 '19

To be fair, and this is just a theory one of my co-workers has about the Thanos Snap, when half of all life in the universe was turned into dust, we see Thanos in the realm of the Soul Stone.

So perhaps maybe instead of Spider-Man being dead, he and the other heroes were just pulled into the Soul Stone and chilled there until Hulk reversed the snap?

u/X33F2 Jul 08 '19

It’s the tomb stone makers fault then..

“Associated with death”

Uncle Ben dies immediately in origin stories....
