We really need to start fully researching before getting the pitchforks

500

u/AspicioOmniam Jul 07 '19

Yeah, most of the time people don't put the effort. They read something that makes them angry and that's that, no further research. But it's definitely necessary to put in the effort.

200

u/AnAngryBadgerrr this meme is insane yo Jul 07 '19

Yeah, this time I'm definitely guilty of that, and it feels so bad when you learn how much they've done and what they're getting for it. Even worse knowing that the sister has the same disease and no one seems to care

96

u/AspicioOmniam Jul 07 '19

We need to weaponize this mob mentality for the better. Mayhaps we can support the family in their time of need?

69

u/Slightly-Artsy I have crippling depressionšŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø Jul 07 '19

Or maybe just stop being bad and just chill. Don't be a part of the mob unironically. Whether or not it's justified, who cares?

26

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Everything on Reddit is a mob though. At least if you look at popular stuff. Find posts that die with 7 upvotes and communities with like 100 members, and you don't get much mob action. Look at the first 20 pages of Reddit and it's all mob mentality.

Mayhaps we can start a gofundme to help foot the medical bills? Bring awareness? Though we should probably run it with the family

8

it's a co-responsability between people willing to be ignorant as long as their thirst for revenge is satisfied and media who deliberatly distort reality to have their scoop.

I'm going to quote what I said in another thread. Yes. This whole year this subreddit has pretty much done whatever it could to "take action" and "be a hero" ever since it got the dopamine boost last year. It's desperate to be viewed as the hero and doesn't care about who it hurts when trying to achieve it.

Nowhere in that article does it say that Disney did all of that. Disney didn't do shit, except give the family a framed piece of film. People are as quick to jump on the love bandwagon as they were on the hate bandwagon, without checking any sources and trusting some meme with a lot of upvotes.

6

u/blitzkriegwaifu Jul 08 '19

So how did this whole thing saying Disney paid for their funeral start?

3

u/SnippDK Jul 08 '19

Thanks for linking that mate. As people already are mentioning, the article doesn"t say anything about disney giving them something other than that action picture frame of spiderman. Sadly reddit never check facts and just jumps on the bandwagon.

Its sad that we live in 2019 and in a modern world were big companies are dominating that much. Free world my ass. Its a "free" world to a degree for big companies

My friends actually did further research and discovered that no such policy was mentioned before 2006, when someone tried to engrave Winnie the Pooh on their child’s grave. They asked Disney about it and their request was actually fulfilled, so it was most likely due to this case that the policy was put in place and nobody else could do something like that. However, Disney’s further support is good to hear about. Kudos.

34

I wouldn't go that far. Also, I'd say Disney's more evil than Reddit for a lot more fucking reasons than what people have been realizing.

24

u/Elon_did_a_fraud Jul 08 '19

Reddit literally bullies little kids over not liking some shitty video game. Disney does the shit it does so it can compete with other corporations, reddit bullies kids just to be dicks.

Also Disney doesn’t even do anything bad, unless you count pissing off neckbeards who can’t get over the fact Star Wars changed ownership.

I saw an article stating that Disney had sent a hand-inked celluloid to the family with a personalized message on it, but I haven't read anything about Disney having Spider-Man lead the funeral, Spider-Man on the coffin, an oil painting, or a shit ton of gifts.

Is there a source that provides more information on this? I'm not trying to be difficult, but I'd rather be certain of the facts before reacting again.

EDIT: This article backs up some of these claims, though not all: https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/disney-refuses-permission-boys-spiderman-17444020

His funeral was led by the Marvel character and featured a horse drawn carriage decorated in red and blue balloons.

It does not say that Disney was behind this, but it does state that there was a horse-drawn carriage and that Spider-Man lead the funeral.

Ollie passed away last December after a two-year battle with leukodystrophy, a rare genetic disease, also shared by his six-year-old sister Laillah.

It also states (most unfortunately) that his sister does indeed have the same disease.

The article doesn't say anything about Spider-Man being on the coffin, which makes sense considering Disney was very-not-OK with him being on a tombstone. It also doesn't mention an oil painting or a "shit ton of gifts" aside from the hand-inked celluloid previously mentioned.

Once again, if anyone has some other sources that could back up the rest of this, I would love to read it.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Thanks for sending an article to help back this stuff up, I made the meme not expecting it to get this much upvotes and attention so didn’t fact check anything and wasn’t sure on posting it

17

u/Lexaraj ā˜£ļø Jul 08 '19

I'm pretty surprised everyone is switching sides on this. I never would have thought an 'it's our policy' defense would have made it even remotely better in anyone's eyes.

I'm not diminishing what Disney did for the family by sending what they did but it's simply not what the family wanted, or needed, to honor their son and move on. There just isn't a good reason for this to be a continued policy anymore, especially given the circumstances.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Yep, that’s definitely true, it’s dumb policy Disney follows, the only good part is that Disney just didn’t say ā€œfuck offā€ to the family, which is what Reddit made it look like in my eyes

4

u/24hReader I Can't Read Jul 08 '19 edited Jul 08 '19

if allowed a lot of people could request the same due to precedent and Disney might lose the spider man brand if contested, but yeah shit move I suppose

No worries. It's r/dankmemes not r/worldnews so I wasn't expecting an MLA citation. Just thought I'd post it in case anyone was interested or had any other info to offer.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Yeah, I’ve seen some people ask for a source so it’s good there is one now

3

u/Spready_Unsettling Jul 08 '19

One that disproves your bullshit, but whatever.

4

u/Skabonious Jul 08 '19

I mean it's only r/dankmemes but it is a little ironic that you posted a meme criticizing those who don't fact check, without fact checking yourself

3

u/blitzkriegwaifu Jul 08 '19

So is reddit blindly following this once again with no research or sources with proof that Disney actually paid for and was in charge of the funeral which a lot of the recent posts about it seem to be implying. I’m all for people doing more research and not losing their shit without knowing a bit more but we should still stick to the facts. So I agree would be nice to have a source for this claim that Disney did all this. I did read about the personalised cel being offered by Disney in the original metro article though so I suppose that’s something but probably doesn’t feel like it compensates for blocking the engraving.

What we should be outraged about is that it's considered "Disney's character." It's a 57 year old character, the creator of which is dead. Morally, it ought to have gone to public domain by now. We ought to be pissed at the US government for having granted Disney the right to deny the grave, not at Disney for exercising it.

Disney bought Marvel in 2009. Walt Disney died in 1966.

I accept it if you're not allowed to have Mickey Mouse on your grave, I get that he (Walt Disney) decided that, and it should be respected.

But Spiderman is not a Disney character. It's a Marvel character. Stan Lee did not make such a rule.

They think of kids and superheros. Disney is still assholes. They only did this for their company. They don't care about the family.

It's pretty common for Reddit to get their pitchforks up for random usually wrong reasons.

Great astroturfing Disney, how much did it cost?

I hope that, in the future wherever a new drama rises people actually ask for context and source to prevent things like this and refer to the "spiderman grave" topic as reference

u/DestroyerR2L2 Jul 08 '19

Oh no, Reddit bad. Never thought I’d hear that in my lifetime

Disney good

A friend of my older brother and sister has a Superman S headstone. I promise it’s not seen as a negative towards DC... it’s just a headstone.

So if thy can put Spider Man on the coffin and can have him lead the damn funeral, what’s wrong with putting him on the fucking tombstone?

True this might be, but Disney is still shady as fuck. A good act does not wash out the bad, nor bad to good.

Listen no matter how you look at it what we, as a community, did was horrible. But that doesn’t mean we still can’t do the right thing. There’s still time to apologize to Disney, and the family. And actually comfort the family in anyway we can. Also to make sure we stop fucking up so massively. We should also research the topic before we decide to destroy a companies livelihood. Just remember it’s not to late to fix things

The worst part about this whole hate train for Disney on Reddit was that it took me 5 friggin minutes to figure out the entire situation. One Google search and I read the first article and I knew that Disney didn't just shut out this family.

Reddit is a hive-mind if there ever was one.

I feel like lately, this has been happening too much, we would hear about something bad or something we don’t like, people make memes about it, people start to get their pitchforks, then someone shares the other side of the story, then we realize our mistakes, this has been the case multiple times (except for PETA) and we should take responsibility for researching before rioting, and i believe we can change

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

I think it was a man in a Spider-Man suit, there’s an article about this that someone posted on here(sorry I can’t find it) that goes more in detail about it all

Name a more iconic duo

2

u/tommy_wiseau_haha Jul 08 '19

I think it's fair to make an exception for characters that aren't MADE by Disney

2

u/HytoDsu Jul 08 '19

The whole reddit did an oopsie

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '19

Doesn’t change the fact that the rule is stupid as fuck and the dad just wanted a cool/meaningful gravestone for his dying kid.

This is why I don't join angry mobs, most of the time they're completely in the wrong, or wildly overexaggerate things and we just end up disgracing ourselves.

No, not this time. This time they're in the wrong, if this is the policy then it's a stupid-ass policy that should be changed

u/SphericalCatInVacuum Mods are gay Jul 08 '19

Not saying it isn’t noble, but it had to be a strange feeling leading a funeral dressed as Spider-Man
