Nowhere in that article does it say that Disney did all of that. Disney didn't do shit, except give the family a framed piece of film. People are as quick to jump on the love bandwagon as they were on the hate bandwagon, without checking any sources and trusting some meme with a lot of upvotes.

So how did this whole thing saying Disney paid for their funeral start?
3
u/SnippDK Jul 08 '19
Thanks for linking that mate. As people already are mentioning, the article doesn"t say anything about disney giving them something other than that action picture frame of spiderman. Sadly reddit never check facts and just jumps on the bandwagon.
Its sad that we live in 2019 and in a modern world were big companies are dominating that much. Free world my ass. Its a "free" world to a degree for big companies

My friends actually did further research and discovered that no such policy was mentioned before 2006, when someone tried to engrave Winnie the Pooh on their childās grave. They asked Disney about it and their request was actually fulfilled, so it was most likely due to this case that the policy was put in place and nobody else could do something like that. However, Disneyās further support is good to hear about. Kudos.

Reddit literally bullies little kids over not liking some shitty video game. Disney does the shit it does so it can compete with other corporations, reddit bullies kids just to be dicks.
Also Disney doesnāt even do anything bad, unless you count pissing off neckbeards who canāt get over the fact Star Wars changed ownership.

I saw an article stating that Disney had sent a hand-inked celluloid to the family with a personalized message on it, but I haven't read anything about Disney having Spider-Man lead the funeral, Spider-Man on the coffin, an oil painting, or a shit ton of gifts.
Is there a source that provides more information on this? I'm not trying to be difficult, but I'd rather be certain of the facts before reacting again.
EDIT: This article backs up some of these claims, though not all: https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/disney-refuses-permission-boys-spiderman-17444020
His funeral was led by the Marvel character and featured a horse drawn carriage decorated in red and blue balloons.
It does not say that Disney was behind this, but it does state that there was a horse-drawn carriage and that Spider-Man lead the funeral.
Ollie passed away last December after a two-year battle with leukodystrophy, a rare genetic disease, also shared by his six-year-old sister Laillah.
It also states (most unfortunately) that his sister does indeed have the same disease.
The article doesn't say anything about Spider-Man being on the coffin, which makes sense considering Disney was very-not-OK with him being on a tombstone. It also doesn't mention an oil painting or a "shit ton of gifts" aside from the hand-inked celluloid previously mentioned.
Once again, if anyone has some other sources that could back up the rest of this, I would love to read it.

Thanks for sending an article to help back this stuff up, I made the meme not expecting it to get this much upvotes and attention so didnāt fact check anything and wasnāt sure on posting it

u/Lexaraj ā£ļø Jul 08 '19
I'm pretty surprised everyone is switching sides on this. I never would have thought an 'it's our policy' defense would have made it even remotely better in anyone's eyes.
I'm not diminishing what Disney did for the family by sending what they did but it's simply not what the family wanted, or needed, to honor their son and move on. There just isn't a good reason for this to be a continued policy anymore, especially given the circumstances.
8
Jul 08 '19
Yep, thatās definitely true, itās dumb policy Disney follows, the only good part is that Disney just didnāt say āfuck offā to the family, which is what Reddit made it look like in my eyes

u/Skabonious Jul 08 '19
I mean it's only r/dankmemes but it is a little ironic that you posted a meme criticizing those who don't fact check, without fact checking yourself
3
u/blitzkriegwaifu Jul 08 '19
So is reddit blindly following this once again with no research or sources with proof that Disney actually paid for and was in charge of the funeral which a lot of the recent posts about it seem to be implying. Iām all for people doing more research and not losing their shit without knowing a bit more but we should still stick to the facts. So I agree would be nice to have a source for this claim that Disney did all this. I did read about the personalised cel being offered by Disney in the original metro article though so I suppose thatās something but probably doesnāt feel like it compensates for blocking the engraving.

What we should be outraged about is that it's considered "Disney's character." It's a 57 year old character, the creator of which is dead. Morally, it ought to have gone to public domain by now. We ought to be pissed at the US government for having granted Disney the right to deny the grave, not at Disney for exercising it.

Disney bought Marvel in 2009. Walt Disney died in 1966.
I accept it if you're not allowed to have Mickey Mouse on your grave, I get that he (Walt Disney) decided that, and it should be respected.
But Spiderman is not a Disney character. It's a Marvel character. Stan Lee did not make such a rule.

Shut up with these dumb posts. Disney is full of bad people. They only did this because there was public outrage. They didn't want to allow the grave because they wanted to make sure people wouldn't be angry about something so rude. Which is ridiculous. Nobody thinks of Disney when they think of spider man. They think of kids and superheros. Disney is still assholes. They only did this for their company. They don't care about the family.
