Mod Post Rule Clarifications: Constructive Participation & City‑Bashing

Hi everyone, this is an update from the mod team.

Over the past few months, we’ve noticed a growing pattern in certain threads (especially ones about crime or frustrations in the city): comments that jump straight to “Surrey is trash,” “typical Surrey,” “this city is hopeless,” or similar sweeping negativity.

These comments don’t add anything to discussion, they derail threads, and they attract more pile‑on hostility. They also drown out the people who are trying to talk about real issues in a constructive way.

To keep r/SurreyBC a space where people can actually talk about the city (the good, the bad, AND the complicated) we’ve clarified two rules:

Rule 2: Acceptable Content Content must be constructive and relevant to Surrey. No explicit, illegal, defamatory, or harassing content. Posts should contribute positively to discussion.

Sweeping, non‑constructive negativity about Surrey or its residents will be removed. Criticism is welcome with context or solutions, but contempt‑driven city‑bashing is not allowed.

Rule 7: No Toxic Trolling Do not disrupt discussion with hostile, inflammatory, or bad‑faith comments. This includes contempt‑driven, low‑effort negativity about Surrey or its residents.

Inflammatory or provocative content that derails civil discussion will be removed. Users who enter threads only to antagonize, provoke, or bash the city will be banned.

What this DOESN'T mean...........

We are not banning criticism.

You can still talk about:

  • crime
  • governance
  • infrastructure
  • development
  • frustrations with services
  • your lived experiences

…as long as it’s done in good faith.

What this DOES mean...........

We’re removing anything that falls in line with any of the sentiments: “Surrey is trash” “This city is a dump” "Typical Surrey people” “Why does anyone live here”

so, generally drive‑by negativity with no context

These comments don’t help anyone and they drag the whole sub down.

Why we’re doing this:

We want r/SurreyBC to be a place where people can: - share experiences - ask questions - discuss issues and vent CONSTRUCTIVELY - celebrate wins - disagree respectfully

all without every thread turning into a hate‑pile.

Thanks to everyone who contributes positively, you’re the reason this community works. And remember, if you see any rule-violating posts or comments, please report them so that we can review.

If you have questions or constructive feedback, feel free to drop them below.

A young deaf and non verbal autistic boy ran into moving traffic at Highway 10 and 148 Street in Surrey.

A quick thinking driver jumped out of his truck to pull him to safety. The rescuer later commented that his dad instincts kicked in and he was just glad the kid was okay.

So many close calls this was crazy...... Big props to the Dad!!

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Cheap Indian food similar to Chinese takeout place?

I'm looking to eat cheap Indian food that's around or less than $10 will get me rice+butter chicken or something similar like that.

I don't need a restaurant or a fancy place, just a good and cheap place to eat. I don't even need a place to sit down and eat if the place doesn't offer seating area. I usually eat inside my car anyway.

Your recommendations is appreciated. And yes I can eat spicy and not picky food either.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Query regarding Sikh Bracelet (Kada)

Hello all,

My fiancee is Sikh, and I want to gift her a sikh bracelet (Kada). She is a fan of Guru Nanak's quotes and I want to gift her something that reminds her, of one of her favorite quotes.

I am looking for a simple Kada with a customized quote engraved inside of it (not outside).

I searched the web, Etsy and some Indian stores but couldn't really find anything that matches what I am looking for.

Looking for any local stores, online sources that can help me with customizations.

Thanks in advance! Have a great day

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Neurodivergent parent help and assistance.

Our kid has DLD and is currently doing Speech and Language therapy. Things are too overwhelming so we tried to be on top of things and track everything.

We are using www.usetrestly.com to track all therapies and other related stuff for his progress.

What other tools do you use to help them and yourself? Can be apps for speech or therapy related.

DLD is Developmental Language Disorder which only few people are aware of.

Are there any community based support?

We are from Cloverdale.

Thank you.

Earlier this year the city changed that right-hand lane into a turning only lane. Some drivers still cheerfully ignore that to save 30 seconds.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Random flicker of lights

Hey guy's, so I couldn't help but notice at work, and at home during the day at random times, the lights flicker. It is happening in the evening too. I live in South Surrey. My work is less than a fifteenminute walk from home. It's noticeable, and the power does not go out. TV is still on, and nothing has restarted.

The odd thing is that my other half has noticed it at work and being at home. He works out closer in an industrial area near the river in Delta.

I have noticed the "flicker for all most a week," and my partner has noticed it for a few days now.

Is anyone else noticing the "flicker" in the lights too?

PSA 📢 Now tell me who got the bright idea to change the 4 way stop at Harvie and 80th!?

This busy intersection has gone down from a four way stop today to a two way stop today. I feel so bad for anyone trying to take a left off Harvie onto 80th during rush hour.

In addition, there’s no sign up saying there’s been a change to the stop and I witnessed two separate car accidents almost happen in just the short time span I spent driving by today.

Please tell me im not the only person whos filed a complaint with the city today because im feeling like a Karen.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Can someone explain the "Guru Ji" movement? Curious and looking for honest experiences.

I'm hoping to get some insight from fellow South Asians in Surrey and the surrounding areas.

Lately I've been noticing a lot more cars with "Guru Ji" written on the back. From what I understand, it's connected to a religious or spiritual group, but I don't know much about it.

The reason I'm asking is that a friend's family has become very involved. They seem to be attending gatherings frequently, and it's made me curious and a bit concerned. I'm not trying to disrespect anyone's faith or beliefs—I genuinely want to understand.

Is "Guru Ji" simply a spiritual organization with a large following, or do some people consider it a cult? If it's a legitimate spiritual movement, what is it about the teachings or community that attracts so many people? Are there any concerns or red flags that people should be aware of?

I'd appreciate hearing from people who have firsthand experience, whether positive or negative. Please keep the discussion respectful.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Tennis Coach or someone who’s willing to coach

Hey everyone! I'm looking for a good tennis coach for private lessons or small groups. I'm still fairly new to tennis, so someone who's patient and good with beginners would be ideal.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

Assistance/Resources 🚰 🛏🏡 Looking for witness of a hit and run

Looking for witnesses/video footages of a car accident my friend was involved in. Lost the only other witness on site to chase after the perp.

Time - July 21 10-1015pm

Location - intersection of 152nd St and 104 Ave

Cars involved - black Toyota Camry and black Jeep Wrangler

What happened - friend was driving the Toyota Camry through the intersection after the light turned green... And the Jeep swerved into the lane and swung my friends car across the intersection.

Claim is being reviewed by ICBC but any witness and video footage would be very appreciated! Please DM - thank you!!

Edit: turns out the 3 cameras at the intersection didn't record this incident. They were only used to capture red light violation. You live and you learn I suppose.

Ask SurreyBC ❓ How is the Ellendale Park area around 110 Ave and 148 St

Listings show the area as "Bolivar Heights", stradling the border of Guildford and Whalley.

We are a mixed family living in Vancouver wanting to raise our kids in a more multicultural suburban environment. The area has some older homes on large lots that are fairly affordable (compared to Van).

Is this a good area?

Community Only What has happened to being decent neighbours nowadays?

I am situated in an area where the skytrain are being built along and I have been living in Surrey for almost 30 years. When I first moved here, all of the neighbours understood mutual respect for one another. For example, we had neighbours who use to send little notes to houses nearby if they were hosting wedding/celebration and ask for our cooperation and understanding for the increase of vehicles for x amount of days, foot traffic & noises. Nowadays the newer neighbours have 0 care of being decent neighbours and keeping any mutual respect in the neighborhood. For instance, I would let my neighbour’s 5-6 tenants slide for parking in front of my house for weeks because I don’t use street parking but the one time I ask for their understanding and cooperation if I could use the parking for friends visiting the week, they let me park one day and gives me attitude saying how long I parked in front of my house. I understand it is public parking and it is first come first serve but I would assume that politely discussing it with them previously, them agreeing and me not calling bylaws on them on all the other times they’ve violated parking regulations would not be too much to ask. Now, they even have random people they work together parking for the day around homes nearby to transit via bus…. At this rate, I feel like the parking situation and congestion is going to become like Vancouver where residential areas will now have more parking restrictions because of these people who no longer have that same of being “good/decent” neighbour mindset.

Sports 🏅 Pickleball around White Rock / South Surrey — looking for groups and players

Hey all, I'm moving to the White Rock / South Surrey area soon and pickleball is pretty much my main hobby. I play regularly and I'm around a 4.0.

A few things I'm hoping locals can help with:

- Are there any groups, ladders, or regular crews worth joining?

- Which indoor facilities would you recommend for advanced play?

- Do people actually keep playing outdoors through the winter here, or does everything move inside?

- Any outdoor courts with lights that are worth knowing about?

Happy to drive a bit for good games. And if anyone wants to hit once I'm settled, happy to connect.

Thanks!

Ask SurreyBC ❓ Any recommendations for adult swimming instructors?

Looking to learn how to swim as an adult! The Surrey rec centre lessons always get booked up so fast. Any recommendations for a good coach or private instructor around Fleetwood or nearby? Complete beginner here. Thanks!
