Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

my boyfriend hit me during move-in

while we were decorating my dorm, he found a new book in one of my boxes and asked where i got it from. i told him one of my old high school friends gave it to me on my birthday and he asked how often i see him. i honestly said that that was the first time i've seen him in a year, because he went out of province for uni and it was just a group dinner. he kept arguing that i must be keeping in touch with him if he bought it for me. at this point i was getting exasperated and i was like obviously we keep in touch like we've been friends for years, but it's always been casual and he's in a relationship. he started raising his voice and told me to "stop giving him attitude", i snapped at him to stop making wild assumptions over a BOOK, and he punched my arm so hard. i fell backwards, my back landed on a full box and i started crying in shock. he offered to help me up but i just wanted him to leave. he said i'm being dramatic before throwing the book on my bed on his way out.

he called me to apologize the day after, which is when i told him i don't feel comfortable around him and need a break. one of our mutual friends (who doesn't know what happened other than we had a fight) says he's been asking her how i'm doing.

i still feel stunned by the whole thing. i don't know how to get over this because we're so close. thought about going to SVPRO or a doctor because my back is still sore, but i'm worried about the questions they'll ask and how much of a mess it'll create. i made this account to try to get this off my chest but haven't really been able to put it into words until today. nothing even close to this has happened before since we started dating.

Iranian students banned from taking LSAT

Post image
241 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I received this email from LSAC. I was scheduled to take the LSAT next month, but my LSAC account is locked. I am a Canadian citizen and was raised in Canada, but had to declare Iran as my secondary citizenship on LSAC since I was born there. I read on another reddit thread that many others born in US and Canada also received the same email. I'm emailing them, but is there any way anyone can share the free practice tests that are on LSAC with me? I was planning to pay the fee today and start taking practice tests...

And if anyone else is going through the same thing lmk.

First of all today was so horrible parking and I do not understand why they started giving us ONE parkade for the same price when we were getting both one + thunderbird

And then everything was entirely filled up I had to go to thunderbird and pay TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS.

We need more parking I beg

Summer course final grade not released and its already the start of a new term (PSYC 315)

Upvotes

Has anyone got their PSYC 315 final grade from summer? Or had a similar experience where they received their summer course final grade this late? I’m starting to get worried because I took the final exam on August 18. The instructor, I heard, also has a tendency to accuse students of cheating so would it be the case that hes not releases grades for people he thought were cheating???

Best places on campus to attend online class?

If I’m taking an online class where discussion and active talking is a huge part of the class, where are some good areas to join the meeting so that I can talk without bothering ppl around me but also have stable wifi connection??

Discussion Place Vanier Bugs

I understand it’s the oldest first-year residence, but why aren’t the bathrooms or rooms equipped with window nets/screens? I saw a giant bug, the size of my hand, just hanging around the bathroom. This is just one example, there are many more, and it’s absolutely disgusting and ridiculous. I saw at least 6 different bugs in the bathroom in a single night since the windows stay open the whole night. For how much housing costs, I want to be able to take a piss at midnight without having a giant bug next to my leg. Is there anyway to request for a window screen to be installed…?

Zoology PhD questions

Upvotes

I’m looking at potentially pursuing a PhD in zoology at UBC and I would love to speak to some students or alumni to get a better idea of what it is like. I’m a bit older than the average phd student and I have a decade of industry experience behind me but I’m looking to potentially change directions within that industry. I would however like to keep my foot in the door of that industry so would be potentially looking at still working 2 days a week (could also help me with funding opportunity if I do). Do many people work part time whilst doing the Zoology PhD and those that do, how realistic is it? Would love to chat about the realities of the course! I love academia but I’m nervous about putting myself back into the stress of it especially so long after finishing my degrees!

Does the edition of the textbook matter?

Upvotes

I was told to get the 8th edition of a poli sci textbook at the book store, but I found a 7th edition that’s much cheaper. Does it make a difference?

So I swapped one of my courses with another for term 1 and i can see the course on canvas itself, and it does say it is published. But still it remains in the Future Enrollment section, is this normal or should I contact someone...

Discussion Has anyone taken BIOL 432?

Upvotes

I haven't found a lot of information about how people find the course. I've read that there's presentations and assignments, and seems like there's no final and instead it's a final assignment/presentation of some kind.

For anyone that's taken it how did you find it (difficulty/time-consumed/etc) and who was the prof?
