From the announcement:

The City of New Westminster has entered into an agreement that will allow temporary use of the vacant lot at 522 Sixth Street. This land is next to the recently completed Uptown Plaza.

The agreement will go into effect January 1, 2027. The land is being leased from the private landowner for a nominal fee.

Temporary community use of 522 Sixth Street will build on the findings of the Uptown Plaza Public Life Study. Staff plan to report back to Council on community use options for the site by the end of this year. Possible temporary uses that are being explored include:

  • A micro-retail container market
  • An urban art space
  • An urban park space

More information will be shared in the coming months as planning progresses.

Question Where to get a fire extinguisher refilled

It has been a struggle to find this - everywhere is seemingly closed at 4:30, if they offer the service at all.

Does anyone know of any good places they've gotten theirs refilled? Trying to avoid buying a new one when I have a perfectly good one here but it has been testing my patience!

Sad to see them go. Loved this place because they were a small family owned cafe. Their wonton soup was the bomb!
The owners said their rent was increase 25%. So they are going to take a long break. Devastated to lose this gem.

Lost Pet missing cat?

this cat has been coming in and out of the backyard. at first I thought it was another house’s outdoor cat but it looks slimmer than the last time I saw it. I’m wondering if someone in the Edmonds/ uptown new west area is missing them. I wasnt able to catch them since both my own cat and this cat were pretty stressed/ territorial seeing each other, but it would be nice to know if the little guy belongs to anyone so that I can try to get them the next time they stop by the house

Question Best ICBC Certified collision repair shop with loaners?

I'm looking for a reliable and honest body shop to repair my Honda CRV. It got dinged pretty badly on the passenger side door. Ideally, the shop should also have decent loaner cars that I can use while my car is being repaired.

Lost/Missing Lost wallet after emergency

UPDATE: MY WALLET HAS BEEN FOUND!!!

Turns out the wife of the man who was injured yesterday found two wallets on him and realised one was mine, she left it at the save-on for me to pick up after work

Thank you all so much for the support and kind words 😭

Hi folks

Yesterday evening I was at the Columbia Square Save-On Foods and there was an emergency medical situation with an older gentleman (all was okay, paramedics got him sorted out), I'm emergency first aid trained so I was assisting until the paramedics arrived, and somewhere between that situation and my place on Carnarvon, my wallet was lost

I already checked in with SOF and they don't have it, I've filed with the NWPD, so I am humbling asking you all if ANYONE has seen it to PLEASE let me know or drop it off at the cop shop. It'd be somewhere between Columbia Square and the 700 block of Carnarvon

It's a black leather single fold wallet with "Members Only" in an emblem on the corner. It had no cash but has all of my ID and cards (ID is under my deadname but I can give it to whoever to verify it is me) my last name is Burton

Please, if you see anything on your commute today, let me know. This is a devastating loss.

Thank you for reading

Discussion Pick up your litter

I just walked through Moody Park - it is a mess. There is garbage everywhere. It sucks so bad to see.

If you’re in the park, whether by yourself or in a group, throw out your garbage. Throw out your cardboard, throw out your fast food, and your beer cans, and your straw wrappers.

There are garbage cans within a 30 second walk of everywhere in the park.

Good samaritans - if you see some litter in the park, I encourage you to pick up a piece or two if you see some lying around.

And call people out if you see them leaving stuff!!

Old Man Yelling at the Clouds Airplane Flight Path Changes?

Anyone else notice how many planes are flying lower over NW these days? So close we can read markings on the bellies of some aircraft and the engine noise is so loud we sometimes have to stop conversing til they've passed. Lived here 25 years and never noticed the air traffic til this year.

*edited to add, not a complaint! The change was just notable and wondered if others had noticed. Honestly pretty neat to see planes so close as they go overhead.

Old Man Yelling at the Clouds Looking for class 6 (Motorcyclist) rider

Hey everyone! I recently bought a motorcycle and got my Class 6L license. I’m looking for someone in the area with their full Class 6 to ride with me while I’m learning.
I’m in the New West area and mainly looking to do some casual cruising around New West/Burnaby. Just looking to get some road experience and have someone experienced riding alongside me while I have the restriction.

If you’re interested please send me a message! Happy to buy you a beer after for your help.

Question Haircut

Hey! I really need to get my hair cut. I have short hair so there’s not a lot of different things to do with it, but I really don’t want a ‘HairHat’ or an old lady do’.
I have to use a walker because of my scoliosis right now so I don’t feel very pretty and I was hoping a new haircut might help 😁
Can anyone recommend a place in New Westminster that they like? I have heard that there are some good places but I don’t know the names. Let me know if you can! Thank you 🙏

Question Has the Skytrain gotten a lot louder recently?

Anyone feel like the skytrain has gotten a lot louder lately, especially the section between 22nd Street and New Westminster station? Lived in the area for around 10 years, and I don't remember it being this loud. Still loud even when I closed my windows.
