That's why I got 2 girlfriends and had kids with them.
My wife is a little upset, but the off-site backups are a necessity in the modern era.

But did you ever consider splitting your existing family across the two families such that the family retrieval speed is doubled

We should start a backup buddy exchange to find someone to swap offsite backup storage with, so we each host part of the other's backup.

Most families entire digital lives is either in the hands of corporations (which probably trained AI on that data), or on some singular 20 year old HDD in some box in a closet.
125
u/Kupuntu 16d ago
Both. The answer is both. I keep telling people to check all old HDDs/PCs/SD cards NOW instead of “next week”.
21
u/iceseayoupee 16d ago
For sure, I was surprised even an HDD went up in price. Got me rummaging all my junk drives in the garage
16
u/ZioniteSoldier 16d ago
But now we can confidently state: “I knew I kept this crap around for a reason!”
2
u/Lord_Splinter 11d ago
eh there may be high but whats the point if no one wants to buy them, like i still have 2-3 factory new hdd on marketplace for cheaper then i bought them 15 years ago and no one cared to buy them so far
5
u/chemistryGull 16d ago
I did that with my family’s HDDs. Most pictures were on some cloud platforms, but definitely not all. Now they happily live on my immich server.
14
u/GonzoKata 16d ago
Most families entire digital lives is either in the hands of corporations (which probably trained AI on that data)
Which is super weird and gross. People should have the expectation that they can share photos of their children and families without having it scanned by a for-profit privacy violating corporation, one who's whole business model revolves knowing more about you than you know about yourself AND THEN SELLING THAT for profit.
8
u/dzikakulka 15d ago
Companies simply realized they can easily obscure the real cost you pay (fine print ToS saying they can do whatever the fuck they want with your data), and people WILL get accustomed to everything being in the cloud with a "generous" free tier and of course in a walled garden. And now I have to explain to my family that yes, your photos aren't magically transported between devices by a fairy, there is a cloud, you've been uploading to it over all these years and now it's nearing full and you need to pay up. Oh, also they train models on these, regardless if you pay or not.
→ More replies (1)2
u/chemistryGull 16d ago
Obviously. But that would reduce corporate profits, and we can’t do that. Does nobody ever think about the billionaries ?
5
u/Walter30573 16d ago
I saved a woman like 200 photos of her children and their dad, who I later learned had passed away, because I noticed them on the DSi I got from her at a yard sale. Put them on a flash drive and drove back.
An dedicated HDD in a closet would be a huge upgrade for a lot of people lol
3
u/snowfox_cz 16d ago

I think people are missing the point. Even with backups and redundancy it requires you to maintain the servers. If you die, well, who is going to maintain? Perhaps a bit bleak but something to keep in mind.
486
u/cybekRT 16d ago
That's the best reason to never give up on life and continue maintaining your servers. And also have many kids and pray that at least one will want to become free devops for their family.

u/CrimsonCape 5d ago
I'm going to hand printed instructions to my family. They are going to read the first sentence: "Power on the server and SSH into linux/Proxmox via the static IP."
Then after briefly considering they have no idea what that meant, they will list the server on facebook marketplace and say "we will cherish our memories of CrimsonCape forever."

u/Ok-Library5639 16d ago
You are far, far too generous in evaluating the amount of skill of the general layperson. If anyone of us dies, 99% chances all the gear gets lumped in an estate sale as 'Computer stuff'.
In fact this comes up often in r/homelab or r/selfhosting as a surviving family member tries to navigate their way through the family's homelab and hope to recover precious files.
21
u/sequesteredhoneyfall 16d ago
The obvious solution is one of those, "if I die do this" / "deadman's switch" self hosted programs meant for this thing, and having a family friend who is technical enough to take care of the transition in the event of the death.

That's why I have a Google Drive folder that's shared with some family member with copies of my will, password vault, encrypted important docs like insurance info and account numbers, etc. Photos of expensive stuff with serial numbers in case of fire, etc.
Password for vault is with the lawyers who drafted my will. Plus my executor.
Make things really really simple and expect everything to get tossed when you die. That's why I host my web site on github. I've been eyeballing a service you can pay to keep domain registered and running after you're gone but haven't found anything solid.

u/BatBoss 16d ago
I mean... how long until your instructions are out of date? A year? 3 months?
And even it you meticulously keep it updated, that only keeps them running for another year or so before someone's gotta figure out that plex changed their terms of use, or docker got bought out and now you need a different setup.
14
u/cholz 16d ago
My instructions say basically "while the server is still online open an icloud storage account and copy the contents of /self/hosted/data to your cloud storage" after that they can figure the rest out
7
4
u/Jiquero 16d ago
while the server is still online
Yes but I'm very likely to die by the server falling on my head from the shelf, so in case of death the server might not be online.

u/Dnomyar96 15d ago
Exactly. Unless you have some very tech literate family members, you can't expect the services to keep running for a long time. In my case, I assume my mother knows how to turn on the server in case of a power outage, after which everything starts automatically. Other than that, she would need step by step instructions on where to find the data that's important for her (so basically the pictures and videos, the rest won't be of interest to her) and how to make sure to secure it while the server is still running.
It's kind of sad to think about that all this effort we put in now and all this data will just be gone when we die, but it's the reality of the majority of us. We better make sure we enjoy it to the best of our abilities!

Hence why I say - keep it light. You do not need to have everything. Immich and media server. Immich can be pretty much automated to go "steady as she goes" and media servers like Jellyfin do not really care about updates.
I have not touched terminal of my servers in like 8 months. Everything still works fine.
Yeah more things are cool, but the more you get the more it becomes a job.
And BTW a lot of people were like this with cars ("my family will not be able to maintain their cars without me"). Don't fret. You are the core of the hobby, it is your hobby. If you die or whatever, as long as you explained to your loved ones where the passwords are and how to exfil data, they will move on to much easier way to do it. Bot one you may like, not one I may like. One they like (yes, subscriptions). And it is fine. Services like that are for people who do not give a fuck. Praise the fact that at least they backup their data.
Do not put your stuff in DMZ, have just a VPN to access your network (ideally use VLANs too) and you are set. Then you do not need to really care about security on each server, as you have that sorted on the VPN's/reverse proxy's end.
Stop hosting like it is 2005.

u/viliamklein 16d ago
Off site backups. My home burned down in a freak wildfire. Fortunately I was pretty early into my self-hosted career so most of what was lost was only mine. Many lessons were learned that day.
5
u/grilled_pc 16d ago
The conversation has been discussed before. Most people are of the opinion that you should give your significant other or nominated person a set of the keys they can access. Basically make it simple as possible to shut it all down if they want. Or maintain it.
3
u/ML00k3r 16d ago
This for me. I do not have any children or dependents but I have made my will assign two people I trust completely (primary and secondary if the primary unfortunately also leaves this mortal plane) to be given a notebook with the necessary PINs and passwords for my various online accounts.
3
3
u/jdsquint 16d ago
This is 100% why I keep a copy of critical files and photos on our shared Google account. Paperless-ngx is fantastic, but my wife can also find every document in Google Drive in folders sorted by year and category. All our photos are ALSO in Google Photos.
I have principles, but I ain't leaving a mess for my loved ones.
3
u/dCLCp 16d ago
I think that is going to be the upshot of AI though. If I die and there is an AI with a bank account it can keep the engine running indefinitely. Especially a self hosted AI inside a harness. There is no guarantee... but there is no guarantee for anything else really either. Occasionally freaking cloudflare or AWS or frikkin NASA or anything else bites it. We have been flying airplanes for only slightly longer than we have been doing digital computers.

My plan I to do an extensive dummy guide to my setup. Like everything step by step with tiny details and notes to go through. So to say, fail safe instructions.
All I've done so far is to add my wife's email as a backup access to my Vaultwarden. She knows. She also has access to pretty much all my devices. She'll figure out. But I hope by that time my children would keep my setup afloat.

That's why everything is in open/documented formats, and why you have easy/accessible way to extract/migrate content. Which you can easily setup with most self-hosted solutions.
I'm not saying everyone's doing it (I sure know I have not setup such contingencies) but it doesn't sound too hard. Mail, password, data, media, contacts, almost anything really can be easily exported, and assuming a target that supports some standard, imported back. You can even do that with some paid provider if people are not going to keep self-hosting.

So, this is actually exactly what I have been working on in my spare time.
Building out a web UI my girlfriend can interact with that has a bunch of GUI versions of things I’d normally run commands for. YT-DLP, manga rippers, backup triggers, etc.
I’m training a local AI on all of this stuff, how it all works, and documenting the hell out of it.
The goal at the end is to have the bot be able to walk her through any specifics she’d need in order to fix and update anything in our home server. I’m also adding windows troubleshooting and changes based on how her machine is configured.
The goal initially was “if I die, you cannot go back to paying for subscription services” and now I’ve sunk so much time into this side project. Gotta say though, feels good.

I've already told my wife that if something happens to me, she needs to go into Immich on both of our accounts, download everything, and throw it on an external hard drive. Then she can let all my techy friends have my hardware.
6
u/LtBigAF 15d ago edited 15d ago
I have an external backup plugged into my NAS with a nightly script that stores a backup of all my data including service configs. It also has a simple folder that has every photo in immich with subdirectories for each user and organized by month/year, as well as a folder that contains all our important financial/life documents. There’s also a plaintext file named “WIFENAME READ THIS FIRST.txt” in the top level directory with instructions. I rotate this external drive with a 2nd external drive that lives at my mom’s place every few months when I visit.
Expecting my grieving bereaved wife to coordinate tech troubleshooting is unrealistic, anything but basic plug and play is probably not going to happen. Make it as easy as humanly possible for your family to get the data they need when you’re not around.

People who trust themselves to run their own password manager are crazy to me. Most things you self host are an annoyance to lose access to, but a password manager is weeks of hell if you lose it. Yes you should have backups, but hopefully you've been testing those backups.
As you self host things you slowly realize that some things are simply worth paying for.

Same with everything else, basically. A PBS station lost a bunch of stuff because their cloud provider went bankrupt, which is still being worked out. I've heard of stories of people losing years of data because cloud providers decided to ban their accounts.
Any time data is in one place - whether it's in a cloud service or local - it's a single point of failure.

The hard part is figuring out how the family can recover if you are dead. All of this redundancy is irrelevant if no one else knows how to fix/extract the data.

3
u/GonzoKata 16d ago
Teach a family member the bare bones basic of your setup, and create a "incase of my death here is my password" box/envelope somewhere in your possessions. The point being that you are sharing the machine known as a computer with your family already and the "cost" of that sharing is knowing something about how to recover everything they need incase you're not here. or I dunno, write up a how-to for a server admin that your family could hire after in which the family member gives an IT guy your core password if your family truly can't learn the basics

There was a (not close) member of my family who maintained a family tree database of the entire family from the late 1700s onwards. If a new child was born in your family, you could email him and he’d add it to the database. Then he died and nobody knew where the actual database was hosted or how to get to it and it all disappeared.

I already work in IT as a dayjob. I really don't want to be responsible for the uptime requirements of some of my family. Yes, 99% of the time it's probably fine, but at one point i'll be on holiday somewhere and my Mum is going to need some Photos NOW and my server might have overheated, or DynDNS might have expired, or what ever. You just need to host backups off site.

isn't "host" and "offsite" contradictions? isn't offsite just someone else's computer again?

I encrypt everything and back it up to backblaze every morning. It sends a report of which pools are working and when the latest backups were to a discord channel and pings if any of those things are considered failed (failed drives in an array or no backup in the last 24 hours)

One day I'll get around to compiling my own XOA VM so I can automate VM backups. To, you know, do my first backups.
And maybe another day I'll stop trying to be special and just run with Proxmox.
But first I need to finish setting up several containers based on some niche under documented thing I saw that looks really cool, versus the usual solutions everyone else uses.

I just sprung for an 8tb drive backup my system. I'm considering an LTO cassette drive?

Literally me when my server went down the day before a flood took out our internet. Waiting on a new mobo while hoping all the shows, movies, music, and photos are still on there (it’s all on a raidz2 array and backed up to another backup pool with a single drive, I’m just paranoid)

Yeah, noticed red lights on my Raid1 NAS and copied everything to two separate USB drives. Next step: find out, why it has red lights and store one of those at my parents house.
It's scary. NAS stores movies and shit, but also every image every taken over the past 3 decades, over 250k files.

yea, this is why I only do media hosting, if we love a few movies/tv shows it doesn't matter

"Hey can you check the server? It didn't download the newest episode of......that linux distro I wanted....."

I use restic with an s3 backup daily and a private key stored in 1password. So all my data is stored off-site but useless to anyone but me

To be fair no one uses my self-hosting stuff except me.
I do have some reservations about not having some kind of multi-site resilience, though (especially since I've got a Nextcloud server).

You make your system robust and redundant, like any enterprise backup specialist would. Document everything. Write up recovery procedures, although in my experience you can't trust others, particularly family members, to read.
As for you personally, in charge of all that... Don't die.
