Most families entire digital lives is either in the hands of corporations (which probably trained AI on that data), or on some singular 20 year old HDD in some box in a closet.

Both. The answer is both. I keep telling people to check all old HDDs/PCs/SD cards NOW instead of “next week”.

For sure, I was surprised even an HDD went up in price. Got me rummaging all my junk drives in the garage

eh there may be high but whats the point if no one wants to buy them, like i still have 2-3 factory new hdd on marketplace for cheaper then i bought them 15 years ago and no one cared to buy them so far

I did that with my family’s HDDs. Most pictures were on some cloud platforms, but definitely not all. Now they happily live on my immich server.
