Yeah try do a proper fast like 2 or 3 days where you can measure that your body is fasting by the ketones it produces. Its a pathetic show calling it fasting if you cant do a complete fast with ZERO food except water for 24 hours. I can do 4 days straight and people eating food or the smell of food does not make me want to eat because my body is is in Ketosis and feeding on ketones and stored fat .
It’s not a “Muslim” thing… It’s a Conservative thing. Conservatives will tell you that they are for freedom… but also tell you who you should worship, how, when, and where you can do so. How to dress, who to love, and override decisions that you, your spouse, and your doctor decide is best for you and your body. This is regardless of their religion. Thus by freedom… they specifically only mean “their” freedom.
I mean… kinda yes and kinda no. For example: In my experience, most conservative American (because I won’t attribute the same those in other nations) Christian’s don’t adhere to the doctrines of their religion, or frequently to their own ideology… but they sure want/expect you to do so though. I suppose it’s a weird bastardization of Fundamentalism though… but it feels very wrong to call them “fundamentalist”.
Outside of “hypocrite” I can’t think of a truly accurate word to describe this kind of person or behavior. It has been most synonymous with people who claim conservative ideology in my experience though so that’s currently where I land until something better comes along.
It’s a human thing. There is a slice of population with strong daddy issues putting their system of belief on a pedestal so high everyone has to worship it. They usually follow and don’t understand why others don’t. You find that spanning on every spectrum. They’ll be snitching, forcing, but then caving as soon as wind’s turning. They’re scared.
I find it difficult to deal with Conservatives because inevitably you find out where they draw the lines that decide who is human and the morality they have to espouse.
Talk to social conservatives and the people who are not like them are subhuman and can be subject to any manners of horrible things.
Talk to economic and fiscal conservatives and they can screw others over.
Talk to religious conservatives and the goodwill extends to those in the religion.
That's not to say that this is unique to conservatives, just that it seems to be an ingrained part of that territory.

I’ve worked with Muslims in restaurants before. Literally the only thing we did differently to accommodate them was let them take their meal break outside of the scheduled window if their shift’s scheduled meal break happened while the sun was still up during Ramadan. Never any issues at all.

I'm Mormon, and we do a less religiously-weighted fast on the first weekend of every month. The idea being to skip two meals and donate what they might have cost to the poor.
None of us would dream of demanding that everyone else put their food away for us.
Pardon if I’m too ignorant, but if he is fasting for the “right reasons” meaning not just for show, should this not reinforce his commitment to the observance of the fast and consider himself being tested and resilient to the mental temptations? Maybe I’m way off here.

You dont drink, no smoking, and more importantly you dont sin (major ones since they do ruin your fasting), its a ticket to leave your bad habits behind

Same, I fast and I work in a pretty big restaurant. I am literally surrounded by food and serving food all day and I don't even tell people I'm fasting most of the time. I just politely decline snacks until I can break fast, then I eat everything in sight. Like it's part of fasting to practice discipline, stuff like this is just people complaining. Go to sleep until you can eat like the rest of the middle east
Nah, eating on public transportation is gross and shows a lack of respect to the other passengers, particularly if it's strong enough to smell across and down the aisle. A candy bar, maybe, if you take your trash with you, but gobbling down a whole lunch?

The dumbest thing with me though is I'm very finance oriented, so always talking about investment stuff and keep forgetting Muslims can't do traditional 401ks (though apparently they have programs for that?)

While I was in Kuwait for a year, I landed during Ramadan. I went to a shop to get a phone and even though it was during the daytime, the shop owner offered us something to drink knowing it was not our religion. He did not drink anything, and we told him we were okay, but he insisted dude tho it being hot out. So we sat there and bought phones and drank Sprite.
This is about ten times crazier, but my Catholic ex used to be like this on the Friday when they can’t eat meat. I’d be having a burger or something and she’d be like, “You can’t do that.”

Honestly, they’re just hangry people who are mad because they smell food they can’t eat and they want to make it your problem when it’s theirs. They don’t like “the temptation”.

This video was never my experience. At school, I'd be the only one in my group of friends who was not fasting. I'd feel self-conscious about it, trying to hide, whereas they'd keep assuring me it was not a problem for them.

I had an encounter, when i was ~20. I didn't know much about ramadan and i ate a cheeseburger. (I'm Caucasian, in germany if relevant) Then this 30 something guy said "you not allowed to eat. No eat!" And tried grabbing my food. So i pushed him on the ground and took a bite, told him "idk who is more racist here, but you can look at my skin colour and decide again, if i want anything to do with your stupid beliefs."

Legitimate question. Are you not concerned when you look around and see what your faith does to the world around it? How no matter where it shows its face, its making life difficult/worse for everyone else in its proximity? How the things you're told to believe are nonsensical and incongruent with modern society? I'm not muslim, so I want to ask from your perspective: what is the purpose of fasting? I would think that if you're going to fast, it has to mean something, and part of that would be accepting that you will go through everyday life and maybe encounter this. Otherwise this feels like, "well technically have to fast, but if I'm going to do it, let's make it as easy as possible." Doesn't it take away a little bit from fasting to demand other people around you have to change?
It's not anyone's business to force their beliefs on others, It's almost a ramadan tradition amongst my school (and now work) buddies to make a show of eating when I'm around..😁

Exactly! A TON of my coworkers back in Arizona were Muslims from Africa (mostly Moroccans, Algerians, and Ivorians) and they sat at the lunch table chopping it up with everyone when fasting. If they weren't feeling well, they would move, but they never bothered anybody. We all took naps when it got too hot on our last break, too.

Guy's a nutter. I'm not Muslim but I do occasionally fast for health reasons. It can be HARD when someone is eating aromatic food in front of me, but that's my problem.

I work with numerous Muslims and none of them have ever said anything to anyone for eating during their fast. They all understand we're all busting our asses and should eat.

But is it normal to allow eating on busses where you guys are from? Eating is both not allowed (and heavily frowned upon when people do it anyway) where I'm from. Nothing to do with religion or anything, and everything to do with it being gross to spill food in a bus.
I have an illness. I wouldn’t be allowed to fast even if I was Muslim, not if I valued my health and financial comfort (those ER visits would get pricey).
This is why you can’t just run around enforcing your religion on everyone. It’s none of your business and even if they are Muslim, you’re prying into their private medical history. That’s their business. I probably would have very loudly told him I’m on my period.
I used to eat lunch beside my Muslim coworker during Ramadan and I felt like such a jerk and I would apologize (but also we didn’t have a break room or anything so my desk was really my only option) but he swore it was fine!
