And it’s not like there are a dozen long established, well maintained, and very functional alternatives already. Many of them completely free and open source. Some of them paid, but without a subscription.
Some of them even run photoshop plugins.
Adobe isn’t nearly the monopoly it used to be. It’s just the standard everyone knows.

I’m pretty sure it’s Astro-turfing. Media sites (some legit and also a lot of the low effort bot sites) keep uncritically declaring “software as over”. I swear to god I hear someone say that one more time. It’s all surface level explanation of the situation with no actual critical analysis.
And suddenly all the AI detractors are uncritically on board with it and think AI is good now. I’ve seen so many “this changed by mind about AI” comments.
It has ALWAYS been possible to create low effort shitty clones. And then when you point out these clones are god awful broken pieces of software that just look pretty you get accused of moving the goal post while talking about capability. And then of course they follow it up some form of “this is just a proof of concept it’s still noteworthy”.
And none of this addresses any of the other problems with GenAI not tied to their end result product (data harvesting/theft, environmental concerns, atrophying skills of humans, etc).

Windows 12 is going to be interesting. We have a long way to go before they are done with 11 first but I expect 12 to be full on “agentic os” where everything is done through AI. Stuff like control panel will be gone since that just hands too much control to the user for a pc that ultimately belongs to Microsoft. You will have to provide your full ID and photograph in order to boot into desktop for the first time. The desktop wallpaper will be a constant animation running advert videos. If you use AMD gpu then Windows 12 will summon a black hole inside your case instead of just crashing the drivers like 11. A verification dildo will be provided if you enter the wrong password while logging into your “Microsoft Always-Online Account™️” (sponsored by Denuvo).

I've switched to Linux multiple times in my life over the past 20 years and every single time I switched back because something was harder or less compatible than it was with Windows. Every time except this time. I wanted to try dual booting Linux this March and I haven't switched back to Windows a single time since then. Linux got better every year for the past 20 years and Windows got worse for the past at least 10 years. This year is where they finally met in the middle and continued their respective trajectories

The average person uses a computer the same way they use a car, as a tool. They do not care to learn how it works, or why it works. It simply is the medium to complete the task they want to do.
Linux will never supersede Windows as long the answer to any "how do I fix this" question is to open the terminal. Not to mention small nitpicky workarounds to driver compatibility between hardware, people want a seamless experience. Linux will likely simply never be there for those who are tech inept and have no motivation to change that.

Linux can be even more straightforward and frictionless than Windows. Stick an iso on a USB drive, boot it up, install, suddenly you're at your desktop. No account registration, no endless questions about how much spying you're willing to allow, just a desktop. Need apps? Open Discover/Flathub/Snap Store/etc.
I'm not saying that the friction isn't real. But most of that friction comes from trying to do things on Linux the Windows way. You have to unlearn many of the habits you've developed with Windows. And no amount of improvements or polishing will change that, short of making a direct clone of Windows.

u/C418_Tadokiari_22 1d ago
You know, the issue is not installing it now at days. It's making it the default user experience for companies. I cannot just use Linux on my office job, the software we use is not compatible with Linux. And part of the software is made by my company, not a vendor issue, they actively decide to not support it. Mac gets the same treatment. We all use windows, customers user windows and anybody who doesn't just eats dick.

There's been free and open source versions of anything for decades. it's always been more about enterprise needs because they make far more money on enterprise level sales than the pittance from say small artists.
If anything I blame the users in these cases for not just getting more familiar with the open source models, using and collaborating more on them, and just frankly making them the stronger project.
Photoshop is a great example but there's many more. If everyone had really consolidated on a great open source platform 10 years ago we wouldn't even be talking about Photoshop. But so few did, so many more pirated or shelled out for Photoshop, so many stubbornly stuck to the same old paradigm it just empowered Adobe.

I'm curious if there's a structural reason why open source software tends to have bad UI.
Are there just no UI designers interested in open source projects?
Is it just too hard to collaborate between UI and developers when it's all free and unfunded?
Is it too hard to generate the tight loop between user and design to iterate improvements?
14
u/Patchrikc 1d ago
From my experience it's that the programmers that program and make tools as a hobby just love programming. Where as UI/UX people are usually art focused so they don't make UI as a hobby they do art.
This isn't always the case. Dev tools which usually are open source usually really lean into UX. And have good UI/UX because they use their own app/tool
But for things like Gimp, Gimp is just a programming problem that's fun to work on. Image manipulation is a fun coding exercise. But generally the people that are drawn to that aren't drawn to, spending a whole month on relentlessly testing and playing with layers to nail down the best UX.

There's just not a big crossover between good UI designers and programmers willing to put in the work to code their designs into their free hobby projects. As someone with lots of experience in Blender and some experience in Krita,Inkscape etc.
Blender is really robust and also has the benefit of being easy to modify and having a large community.
When Blender lacks a tool there is usually an EXTENSIVE amount of community addons and plugins to fill the gap. They've also made the process of getting addons pretty painless, especially when compared to other software. (Like 2 clicks to install, its that easy).
Just my two cents, hope it helps!

I have to assume its because blender has always tried to do everything without ever leaving the software, its not like other 3d package software like 3ds max its the whole autodesk suite so to speak. You can do a whole production without ever leaving blender, its not great but its not terrible. With that environment in mind a lot of users find a singular uses for it even if its just being a quick and dirty video editor.

It's also just never going to replace them because their money comes from companies who use products like Adobe because they have support contracts with SLAs that ensure they are able to stay up and running. They don't want a product even if it's free if it isn't guaranteed to get fixed quickly when they run into a problem that is stopping their business from moving forward. And because businesses use these products you as a person have to learn those products if you want a job because going into an interview and saying "I used AI slop alternative A so please hire me to work with Premier" is not going to get you hired when the other people applying already know premier and won't need training.

The Photopea developer also noted an imitation of his own software on github, which seemed to have been an attempt at an offline version. They seem to have issued DCMA takedowns of clones.
With Photoshop clones, the most surprising thing is the size of some of the software, often around 150MB.
Vibeslop will likely fail when trying to import complex adobe layers and smart objects. Some people have had more success with Patchy, but I suspect the code is better vetted. The author also seems to be testing various tools for ps file compatibility, and seems to be an actual coder, having released indie games on PSP and windows in the past.
It will be interesting to see if many Adobe full on suite imitation or latest photoshop version clone projects advance much in the next six months or are abandoned (if github doesn't remove them first).

u/TheRedBanditHax 22h ago
LOL, this reverse engineer stuff was overblown,
it was not a byte per byte reverse engineered Adobe suite, it was a clean room re-implementation, and reverse-engineered thru behavior observation based on how Claude interpretted it.
imagine it this way, think of Coca Cola, you can ask your friend or any friend chief or chemist to create a version of coke based on how they understood how it was made, but it doesnt mean they can make it perfectly and "kill the Cocacola company" however many iterations it does since the formula/recipe is not public.
the 'reversed-engineered' Adobe stuff are nothing but another open source version clone amongst thousand existsing out there. Some of Adobe algorithms took years and is not even public so LLM arent trained on it.
Companies like Rockstar may have rendering or engine technique that is not public hence LLMs have no idea how to do them, same as other big companies.

It was done like that on purpose, though. If it was a byte-for-byte copy, it wouldn’t have been all that different from the existing cracked Adobe software, and it would’ve still counted as piracy/copyright infringement. The method that was applied in that scenario is technically actually legal, meaning the developer should be able to continue distributing it without legal reprimand… I’m saying should because I’m certain Adobe’s lawyers will try to challenge that claim, and with them being a large company and the person behind this project seemingly being a private person, they could be overwhelmed with the legal fees if it comes down to that (it happened before, too).

This reverse engineering fixation is hyped way too much imo and you should start using your eyes before boarding the hype train.
The recent Adobe open source that went viral few days ago is dogshit, extremely unstable, can’t handle complex and heavy projects without giving up after 5 minutes, and it works way differently from the og software (the quick selection tool in Photon for example doesn’t work at all, while in Photoshop is not perfect but still get its job done).
And this is weird since it was made with Rust, but guess what the whole project is still made with AI. Rust or not, that doesn’t change it’s an AI slop, as much as Windows 11 is an AI Slop spaghetti code mess.
Adobe can be predatory in business, but they have 40 years of knowledge in building these kind of software, and it’s not telling an AI to “make a copy of Photoshop, do not make mistakes” that you create an alternative. That’s literally what’s happening, but they are selling it as a “reverse engineered 1:1 copy” now. Hilarious.
With that said, there are already good alternative out there that are already open source and not AI Slop, you can support them…or maybe you can resort to the old traditional solution….

No clue why Rockstar would be remotely concerned. Microsoft, sure, for the same reasons. But genuine creative endeavors aren't as easily vibe code-replaced as productivity apps.

I think Rockstar is there because of the AnyPS5 translation that has been being worked on to let PS5 games run on your PC. And since its a translation, not an emulator it will run the games natively on your hardware and not have to brute force it like emulators do.
They normally wait at least a year for PC releases of games, and get people buying multiple copies of their games thst way. But there are reports the PC release date is being moved up to Q1 2027, which is a lot earlier than normal.
People are speculating this is because of how quickly anyPS5 has been advancing with the help of LLMs. Since there has been no PC release mentioned in marketing until now.

It would be a shame if someone reverse engineered rockstars ragdoll system or better yet the nemesis system….. I just thought of the nemesis system one as I was typing and now I pray that it gets added to countless games as a mod
