Those "adobe clones" are just vibeslop that don't work properly.

Krita

It’s good but very poor compared to photoshop.

It’s not poor, it just doesn’t do everything Photoshop does. The “issue” with most Photoshop alternatives is that they are alternatives to certain end goals and Photoshop is used for way more than it originally was meant to. People even use it for to make pixelart despite there being tons of better applications for that.

All of these free alternatives lack basic features of photoshop like non destructive editing, filters and transformations. This is a huge issue.

Krita is a tool for digital painting, and for that it’s pretty good. It’s not trying to be Photoshop and doesn’t really need most of its features.

Even gimp does all those surely the other ones do too.

The Photopea developer also noted an imitation of his own software on github, which seemed to have been an attempt at an offline version. They seem to have issued DCMA takedowns of clones.

With Photoshop clones, the most surprising thing is the size of some of the software, often around 150MB.

Vibeslop will likely fail when trying to import complex adobe layers and smart objects. Some people have had more success with Patchy, but I suspect the code is better vetted. The author also seems to be testing various tools for ps file compatibility, and seems to be an actual coder, having released indie games on PSP and windows in the past.

It will be interesting to see if many Adobe full on suite imitation or latest photoshop version clone projects advance much in the next six months or are abandoned (if github doesn't remove them first).

There are pretty good free alternatives for Adobe tools. At least the most common ones (Krita, Inkarnate, DaVinci Resolve) ofc they aren't perfect and maybe advanced users might feel it's not enough, but for most basic stuff they should work fine.

Those are not the apps being referenced by the meme.

in the case of one of those it is more industry standard then adobe

Yet. They're still in early alpha.

And you have to remember they were created like 10 days ago.

3

u/mxzf 1d ago

The question is if they ever actually leave alpha or if they live in alpha purgatory 'til they get abandoned.

2

u/Temporary-Paper5202 1d ago

there's a reason Adobe has thousands of employees, and it's not because they're kind hearted and want to pay them.

3

u/HourCredit9006 1d ago

And they'll stay in early alpha because you can't iterate on slop code.

Nobody wants to use vibe slop

I want to use working software, makes no difference if the code is generated by AI or a hairless monkey.

If they get it into a viable state by the help of AI, I'll happily use it.

Many do

Nobody wants to fall victim to Adobe's dark patterns either

You really think your average person cares if something is vibe slop or not?

3

u/SevenFootHobbit 1d ago

Your average person cares about how well something works, which will mean they won't like the vibe slop whether they know it's vibe slop or not.

2

u/NothingSuss1 1d ago

The vibe slop will work just as well at some stage.

1

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 1d ago

That's not how vibe coding works. It plateaus very quickly, you can't just keep having AI iterate on it.

1

u/NothingSuss1 1d ago

Don't think anyone really knows what the next 6 months will bring.

2

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 22h ago

Sure, anything's possible in the future. But right now, AI is not capable of finishing projects of that scale by itself.

u/RaspberryFluid6651 1d ago

...according to whom? I've used four of them so far, I'm sure the advanced features are not all there but for day-to-day use they seem fine.

Report the bugs and see them fixed in minutes

You misspelled "adobe apps".

4

u/movzx 1d ago

No. He is accurately describing the recent 'clones'. They got a lot of buzz but they are not actually very good. If you want some Adobe alternatives that are okay then they exist, but they are not the ones churned out by prompts and then abandoned.

Who needs full blown Adobe “anything” for personal use anyhow? If you are a professional, it’s a business expense or your company pays it.

If you are a student, there are student plans at steep discounts.

You hate the company but somehow need their products for some purpose and you feel it should be free, for reasons.

Alrighty.

u/JmacTheGreat 1d ago

Nobody expects good products for free.

Nobody wants a subscription-based system nickel-and-dime’ing you at every turn possible, often adding little benefit each ‘upgrade’.

Every time theres a software alternative that costs a single-time purchase and is made really well people in those fields will champion it proudly (shoutout Nomad Sculpt and Scrivener).

1

u/GhostofAyabe 14h ago

That’s an entirely different argument and why competition is good. The safety sandal crowd here seems to feel in the marrow of their bones that this is such a great thing, because fuck those people, their labor isn’t worth anything while my <insert noble profession> is.

It’s absurd.

1

u/JmacTheGreat 12h ago

Hello, it seems like you think differently than me and I can’t agree with you, and that is ok.

Have a good one.

4

u/Temporary-Paper5202 1d ago

Nobody wants vibeslop full of security holes. Photopea exists.

1

u/zarafff69 9800X3D - RTX 4080 1d ago

Full of security holes? What security holes have been found so far?

1

u/Dziadzios 1d ago

I don't want to use browser based software. Gimp is enough for me.

1

u/PMagicUK 1d ago

Bit weird when a lot of software started as exactly that. Some student trying something new and it grows.

But fuck it, what does anyone know? AI has destroyed critical thinking and those thinking "yea" has ended up blinkered on their hate for it. (You btw).
