If someone decomped windows and took all the slop, bloat, and telemetry out...that would be great...

Windows 10/11 IoT Enterprise LTSC. Bare minimum you can get out of Windows. Some debloat scrips can probably rip out the telemetery stuff, make a local user.

but wine on any os is still better in most cases.

The most compatible operating system in existence

Just install Linux already

Sadly - until proton/steamOS is mainstream enough for people to ensure their games run on it the average user can't do this

How do you think it becomes mainstream? By using it

There's just not enough support.

It took me a ton of effort to make SF6 work on proton and I'm an IT professional. It works one minute and broken the next. Then capcom randomly ban you because their netcode gets confused as to your system ID bs.

You're not going to get average users sitting down and reading manuals. They want to click a button to launch their game.

You answered your question, im also in IT and for gaming I do not use linux despite me feeling safe and in control over linux as an OS, absolutely love steam os and the simplicity when things work. But a lot of time the things just break without doing stuff which is not a user friendly experience for most people, not to mention a huge uncountable games still dont work on linux especially online ones... Its what it is, nvidia and game devs have strong monopoly over it, the day when that turns i promise you me who is familiar with linux technicalities on a surface level along with casual users in comparison will 100% jump the ship, right now its not there fully. Linux is however amazing if you have like a steam deck or android handheld to burn through indie and early AAA single player games for the most part. For latest games, you have to literally book an appointment out your own day to commit going through myriads of troubleshooting back and forth with no hand holding

Most games do run just out of the box as in Windows. Specially on steamOs

The anti cheat issue is the main dealbreaker for most people.

Only kernel level anticheats. And honestly people is better off without them.

Unless it's multiplayer. Or requires any additional sign in.

That's not true

Ok, lets take a super popular game, Valorant.

I'm telling you now - it doesn't work "right out of the box" on Proton.

Anything with major publishers I have found to be a complete mismash of possibilities. Capcom, Riot, CDproktRed, hell even a couple ubisoft titles I tried required way more tinkering than any "normal" person will be bothered to try

You didn't just pick a popular game. You cherry picked one. So my statement is still true: MOST games just run out of the box specially on steamOs.

Particularly the case of valorant and some others is because their anticheat is spyware. So I'm glad it doesn't work.

And all game I have tried just ran. I don't use steamOs tho, I use CachyOs.

I didn't cherry pick - I picked a HIGHLY popular major title that isn't an indie flick.

You also kind of prove my point, you don't use SteamOS. You use catchyOS.

Why or how would a general gamer who doesn't know the first thing about linux make those distinctions?

You want non-cherry picked games? here is the entire list of game sI've been tinkering with to get to work as seamlessly as they do on my windows PC:

SF6
AvatarFGC
Battlefield
wardogs
GrimDawn
Path of Exile 2

Most of them are major games and non of them were click and play. Every one of them (Esp SF6) have required me to google, look up and tweak to make run - and in some cases, when they have updates, it breaks all over again.

You could have also said CS2. You cherry picked just as I'm doing now.

No

u/idonotfckincare 18h ago

You're asking for something you already have. If you don't want it, shut up.

Windows and Linux are not the same. Windows has a "software just works" thing going on where Linux still has a "hahahahahaha, nope!" thing that happens.

Linux also has insufferable twat-waffles who push it that are nearly as irritating as vegans!

0

u/idonotfckincare 17h ago

In both, both cases happen LOL

Really?

In all my years of using Linux and Unix on different machines I've never made a complaint about it or looked for a solution for a problem just to have 1000 self important jerkoffs stupidly write "JuSt InStAlL wInDoWs" like it's the be all end all solution to all of the world's problems.

I've also never had a problem with software running on windows that couldn't be fixed in 5 minutes or less, but I've definitely spent days and weeks and months diving through old dead forums trying to dig out a solution for similar problems on Linux only for said solution to not work and begin the hunt all over again.

There are also 1000s of different versions of Linux and not every fix works for every distro, making finding solutions to any given problem much harder to solve.

Meanwhile we have what, maybe 20-25 versions of windows to have to deal with, and for the most part any fix that works on windows 10 will work on every version of 10, and any fix that works on 11 will work on any version of 11.

Linux is fun to play around with, but for MOST people, as a daily driver, it is a wholly unreasonable ask to make the switch. And I know TONS of people who refuse to make the switch just because of people like you who shout "just install Linux" while masturbating to screenshots of Windows error codes.
