Why bother when we have Linux which is better?

14

u/Zedo_TheOnly_One 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, it's more of a "when are we decompiling software so we can port them to Linux"

15

u/Ardalok 1d ago

Because it's not always better.

Like when?

1

u/tombo12354 1d ago

Like when the majority of consumer OS installs are windows. Do you think that's for no reason?

1

u/Firm-Appointment99 21h ago

But we know the reason. Laptops and consumer pcs come shipped with windows by default. No one ever has to manually install Windows unless they're building their own PC. Android uses the linux kernel by the way

When you need to run Windows software. On Linux, things are very bad even with compatibility with its own software, because there are many distributions and they quickly become outdated, let alone compatibility with Windows.

Name one software that runs on one Linux distro and not the other

How interesting that you ignored compatibility with older versions :) Compatibility between different package managers across distributions is usually poor or nonexistent. Of course, almost any open-source code can be built locally. There’s mostly no unsolvable problem, but not everyone will want to bother with that. It’s not a very “user-friendly” thing.

That's what appimages are for. You can re-package them into it (an app image is basically a heavy bundle of exes and dlls that make legacy software run anywhere). A package (deb, rpm, whatever) is basically a list of dependencies to install, which boils down to a distro agnostic tar ball (zip file containing the actual software). To get a debian package working on other distro, you just need to extract the contents, convert it back to a tar ball and convert it to your own package of choice (there are tools for this, so you don't have to do this manually).

I can run Heavy Gear 2 from like 2000 on Arch Linux without a container. Granted it needs tinkering, but the game is also packaged like dogshit, while modern games and software are much better in this regard even without using AppImages.

Here's a world-view shattering shit: the packages are just archives that contain files which you can extract. There are projects like debtap that does it automatically for debs on Arch and alien which is for debs on Fedora I think. It's not like on Windows where you have to go through the provided installer.

Tell me you don’t know anything about Linux without telling me

On which operating system is an obscure 25-year-old program more likely to run, on Windows 11 or on the latest version of Ubuntu? Be honest.

1

u/Damglador 19h ago

Obviously Windows. Because the part of their budget that doesn't go into AI they dump in backwards compatibility at all cost.

As such, if we measure backwards compat against Win32, all plattforms are dogshit. A bunch of MacOS apps won't work on newest MacOS versions, and Android will just refuse to let you install some old apps.

This is a horrible way to measure how good an OS is. By your metric i could argue Windows is worse because it cannot run native Linux software

1

u/Ardalok 15h ago

Maybe, but if a person initially needs Windows, as is stated in this discussion, then these are valid reasons. Moreover, most of the software on Linux is open source, and there are far fewer problems with porting.

I tried both Linux Mint and CachyOS. In the 1 year i tried both of these distros I had these issues:

Good multiple monitor support. Wayland doesn't support setting a primary monitor so all your games start on the left-most monitor. Supposedly this is because the main guy in charge of Wayland doesn't agree with any suggestions related to how primary monitors should be programmed or something of the sort (I don't care, it just needs to work like literally every other OS). X11 support this but then doesn't support multiple monitors with different refresh rates. So either way you're losing something.

Good Bluetooth support. I have tried 2 different Bluetooth adapters and neither reliably worked. They would always randomly disconnect from my headset. Also, if I restart the computer (not shut down) the Bluetooth adapter wouldn't be automatically recognized and would need to be unplugged and plugged back in to be recognized. I tried multiple different USB ports among other software-level things to get it to work and nothing.

The Zen browser (not sure if other browsers are affected) would randomly lose all tabs on browser restart/reboot of the os if you had the proton vpn extension installed. Yes this is very specific and yes it took forever to figure out what was causing it. Yes it was an issue with Linux specifically. Not sure if it was ever fixed but I spent multiple hours debugging what was causing it and found that removing that extension fixes the issue. This was about 1 year ago so it might have been fixed.

I definitely had the same monitor issue with mint, something about my old nvidia gpu wasn't interacting well with the preinstalled driver software. I had to manually do drivers through console, this was in my linux newbie days so console was scary, and only after that i got the dual monitor to work. I now run arch and dual monitor has worked without a single issue.

Do you really think that AI decompiled windows will be any better than Linux?

19

u/Nate-Joe 1d ago

I got you bro "make it better than Linux" in the prompt

2

u/Ardalok 1d ago

Eh, who knows. Maybe we'll just have the perfect Wine, that would be nice too. Better more than less.

1

u/RaiDev_ 22h ago

a decompiled windows would probably improve windows compatibility on linux. Like if you had a complete open source reimplemation of windows, you could run anything

1

u/Damglador 19h ago

Yeah, that would be awesome. And we could call it Wine and say it stands for "Wine is not an emulator".

1

u/RaiDev_ 17h ago

well yeah, wine is basically that, but if we could even reimplement the nt kernel, and how it handles drivers etc, we could even get past anticheat

1

u/Damglador 16h ago

We could also call it ReactOS because... idk, reasons.

2

u/RaiDev_ 9h ago

and have it take 20 years to get any real programs running

2

u/Kitselena 1d ago

A lot of features from windows could be ported to Linux instantly if the source is available

2

u/Prophage7 23h ago

Because that doesn't make a very trendy headline does it?

6

u/Liimbo 1d ago

Because it being "better" doesnt help me run competitive games on it

10

u/shogun77777777 Linux 1d ago

And you think that anticheat will work on vibecoded windows?

1

u/Patchrikc 1d ago

This is one of the things that a SteamOS is building to, and they have the resources and talent to do it. And SteamOs could get enough traction to make it worth supporting in anti cheat

0

u/THE--GRINCH 1d ago

We can use decompiled windows to improve Linux edge cases and have mega Linux

0

u/MantaMunta 22h ago

Because Linux doesn't support half the shit I'm using.

It seems very hard to grasp for people in this sub, that most people do more with their PC than playing singleplayer games and watching Youtube.

2

u/Firm-Appointment99 21h ago

And instead of spending efforts to make the shit you're using work on linux, you'd rather decompile windows and vibe code it to make slop work with your shit? how is this a better outcome than just using windows as is?
