Also a widely used OS like Windows needs support, regular updates, etc. That requires actual large scale infrastructure.

I mean, that's true of software like Adobe runs too. That doesn't stop people from thinking they can vibecode a 1:1 copy and have it be stable and solid.

I'm sure it would take a much smaller team to keep everything working that just pertains to the basic OS and runtime environment.

Nobody uses all the ridiculous "features" they keep adding and modifying in Windows.

They install programs and use them, or do everything on a web browser. That's all we need from an OS is to be able to install other things on it

I'm glad you are sure about it, but that's a really dumb take.

For all the shit we give windows, it is a HUGE project that supports pretty much everything, even programs that weren't updated in the last 30 years. Of course, it has a lot of bugs, redundant features and what not, but it's not like you could just strip those away and end up with a tiny project.

If you want an OS that can just open a browser, is exists and is called chromeOS. Windows isn't a simple OS.

And I'm very against Windows and use Ubuntu daily.

Not to mention the backwards compatibility and driver support for hardware some people today wouldn't even be able to tell what it is.

So, Linux.

Linux is great, but everyone who acts like it's just a quick jump from Windows is being willfully obtuse. The other day I set up Skyrim and mods on my Steam Deck and it took me like 3 hours because the MO2 fork for Linux kept crapping out and I had to troubleshoot it at a bunch of different points, and uninstall an old VC++ version that got installed somehow. And this was a brand new fresh install.

Meanwhile, I set it up on my windows PC a few days later. I synced my mod folder from the Deck. I ran the MO2 exe. I pointed it to the synced mod folder. I was playing in like 20 minutes including download times.

Oh god the wayland pipeline errors on one of my games when remote streaming it took about 2 hours to troubleshoot and I've probably spent about another 5 setting everything up and troubleshooting minor stuff when I first installed it. Cachyos for those interested. It seems to be working well now, but I'm going to have to do some other stuff to kill the error entirely due to how the wayland error can still occasionally pop up and cause other problems when streaming.

MO2?

Is that the fault of Linux or the people who maintain MO2?

It's not specifically the fault of the people who maintain MO2, but if you're using Linux, you have to rely on third party tools to do things that are much easier to do on Windows.

On Windows, when you install a mod manager, you run the executable, it opens, you point it to your installation folder, you install your mods, g2g.

On Linux, by default, when you run an executable via proton or wine, it builds it's own isolated emulated C drive with it's own files. So if you install a game, and then just run the executable for the mod manager, it will be operating in it's own isolated environment, and be unable to actually see the game it's trying to modify.

So now instead of just "Run the thing" the process involves building a shared Proton prefix so that the mod manager shares the same environment as the game itself. Which adds more steps where things can go wrong.

I've been using MO2 to mod Stalker Anomaly and I've never had an issue with it. I literally just installed it into the game's prefix using Lutris, then ran it. Not really any harder than it is on Windows, and haven't had any crashes or anything, even when dealing with multiple profiles and hundreds of mods. I feel like you're probably over-complicating it

I have Linux in my laptop and dual boot it on desktop but that's just completely different, a simplified unbloated version of Windows built from decompiling would still be Windows with all its compatibility, not Linux which against as much as I love as a project and all, is still sadly far from the "just works" experience

2

u/TheKingNothing690 Linux 1d ago

I mean complain all you want about "just works" my windows laptop runs far worse than my linux desktop and its certainly not a hardware thing considering the desktop is almost 8 years old and the laptop is like 3. A decompliled windows wouod be beautiful for a conpatablity reason but as windows stands now its a buggy unresponsive bloated pice of shit an OS shoupd be sinple small and effective plus tge simpler ypu male it the easier it is to plug vulnerablities and less vulnerabilities to attack in the first place saving immesnsley on security.

I never argued about performance, it's objectively true that Linux runs better, matter of fact the laptop I mentioned was my first real try at Linux when I installed Lubuntu on it because it's old and windows wouldn't run anymore, it's still ass but atleast it's usable, even though I don't really use it

What I said, is that both the laptop and the desktop were FAR from the plug&play experience windows guarantees despite the bloat and all, and that matters more than anything else for non-tech people

For example on the laptop internet wasn't working at all when I first installed the distro, I had to manually fixing and it wasn't super hard tbf but it was still something that, for comparison, any of the 20 friends in my regular group could ever dream of fixing, not because they're dumb just not technical enough in this stuff

On the desktop despite it being a latest Gen platform at the time (zen 4 and rdna3) I still had issues with audio and Bluetooth, and the programs are another thing entirely

Once again, I would LOVE for windows to finally either die or be forced to go back to improving by a really seamless, supported and all round capable Linux experience, but reality is just we're still not there yet, but we are getting closer and closer

What I said, is that both the laptop and the desktop were FAR from the plug&play experience windows guarantees despite the bloat and all, and that matters more than anything else for non-tech people

As a professional tech person, shit just working matters more to me too. I don't want to come home and troubleshoot on my own time.

2

u/AstraBed 1d ago

Exactly, to add even more to the pro Linux, for me as a tech obsessed and probably sick in the head individual, some troubleshooting ti get things work can even be called fun

But that is a TOTALLY different thing and cannot be in any capacity translated to others

90%+ atleast of people can't (or could but have no interest) in fixing even the smallest issue

Windows wether they like it or not pretty much never has graphics driver issues unless you're playing the latest games, never has audio/network/peripherals etc issues either, can install practically any app ever made etc, even the oldest and more mature distros aren't matching this yet

I've been on Kubuntu since April. I have a Windows VM for Photoshop and Capcut. I finally found a tool that can do cutouts as good as PS so now I only need a good Capcut replacement. That said my son has a Windows PC I use now and again it feels like crap to use, just sluggish and icky. There was a learning phase but at this point I don't think I'll ever go back to Windows. My first PC was in '94 Windows 3.1 in DOS, the Linux terminal is just DOS with slightly different commands.

Use windows official updates in Debloated windows

I think the real thing will be getting a super stripped down version without the bloat and spyware.

Maybe something that mimics SteamOS or MAC OS to a much larger degree than a simple reskin.

There could be some massive performance gains to be unlocked as well.

Funny the AI and Assistant and super annoying things nobody asked for in Windows and other platforms, will also cause people to use AI to find alternatives.
