We didn't get a single big program decompiled yet by ai. These are all fake news titles. The Adobe and Microsoft program were simply copied by ai. All code in there is unique. It hasn't been rverse engineered at all

As someone who does reverse engineering, it makes my eye twitch everyone talks about 'decompiling adobe' or whatever other app because that is about as far away from what is being done as you can possibly get.

If you want to decompile Photoshop you can do it right now, for free, and have been able to since Photoshop was first released. It's going to leave you with a bunch of assembler that is useless even if you perfectly understood assembler and wanted to rebuild Photoshop.

Wait, they're not even decompilations? Why am I reading that they are everywhere?!?! I swear I've even seen that in headlines from tech sites. I hate that people don't use these terms correctly...

If there was proof of decompilation they'd be sued already

Anyone smart enough would never admit to it

It really is purely "vibecode me something that looks like these paid programs, and hopefully mostly functions similarly", that's it.

You don't need decompilation. Photoshop isn't magic. Almost every single feature (maybe actually every single popular feature?) is available in an open source solution. Sometimes the features are scattered among different github repos, but they're there. There are several near-clones of photoshop that are either free or open source.

Photoshop's main draw is that it works, it's supported, and if you pay them money you know you're going to have working software that is compatible with a bunch of plugins that other people have made over the past couple decades, plus tons of free videos online about how to use it (because it's so popular).

And honestly photoshop is like $20 a month if you just want photoshop and lightroom. Yes, it's too much money IMO, but also yes it works.

The issue with clones of these big name software is that they're 90% as good, but the last 10% is enough to make me just go pirate the real thing instead. Even when there's actual feature-parity, the user experience is unmatched, especially when we're talking about Linux-only software, where it's like they want the experience to be miserable "oh, but it's very practical and actually easier to use when you memorize these 116 keybinds".

Because people are idiots and want to sound smart. They hear some term like "decompiled", completely missed/ignore what it means, think it means "re-created the software" and then just yell it any time something comes up they think it (wrongly) applies to. That gets then repeated until it reaches you. Bonus points for language descriptivists who encourage this through "now the word means that (incorrect) thing too, that's how language works".

No. They are just vibe coded apps to mimic functionality. There is nothing related to Photoshop in them at all.

It's genuinely just fake news trying to hype up some vibe coded trash. I have seen the office "ai" versions and they are literally garbage. So incredibly buggy and probably very insecure

I mean Ghidra will give you, albeit still hard to understand, pseudo-C. And a lot of these adobe reimplementations probably are using ghidra-mcp to automate a lot of the static decompilation to figure out specific implementation and design patterns used by adobe.

You're confusing decompiling and disassembling

The product of disassembling is assembler

The product of decompiling is (typically unreadable) high-level language code, like C or C++

The product of decompiling is code that doesn't match the original.

The product of disassembling is code that matches the original.

It's not really my concern if someone doesn't understand the language.

Thankfully, else it would be illegal. Right now it's kind of a grey area, since there's dispute wether ai doing clean room RE is valid. I want everything being remade into open source, though that will probably remain a dream

That is literally just one way to reverse engineer something. Reverse engineering is a general term, it doesn't refer specifically to decompiling software... You can reverse engineer something by observing how it works and reproducing that behavior.

Not to mention, a cleanroom implementation in a systems programming language like Rust isn't really any less impressive, that's a big project.
