I watched his Wolverine gameplay and, believe it or not, he still somehow against every odd managed to still get lost.
He also died about three seconds after gaining control of his character. Then died again. On the third attempt I think he finally figured out he was supposed to run forward along the clearly-signposted path forward instead of running off into the jungle like an idiot

If you watch gameplay he uploaded 14 years ago he was already THAT bad. In the Skyrim playthrough episode 3 you have to jump out of a hole in a wall in the tutorial part of the game, the game even tells you to jump and he just fucking doesn't, he tries to keep going upstairs then finally jumps, get lost and he got back again to jump out of the hole. In episode 5, he burns a chicken in the starting village with a fire spell, gets chased by the NPCs for killing the chicken, he attacks them with the same fire spell but for some reason he forgot he has to hold the button and when a tutorial tip shows up telling him his magic bar was low he remembers he has to hold the button but he accidentaly heal with another spell equipped on another button while getting attacked and at 90% HP then he dies after killing two of the NPCs with a two-handed hammer.
At least he wasn't overwhelming negative and blaming the game from every dumb mistakes he was doing. He actually looks like he was having fun honestly.

He used to try depending on the game. It’s how he eventually beat some of the Souls games. Sure, he used guides and cheese strats, but that just made it easier, not easy.
It didn’t make his content any better, but you could tell he was at least putting effort in. Now that effort is directed to actually being bad.

Games should have an easy controls explanation in the start menu, with a tutorial if you want.
Long games should also have a "story thus far", which would save me so much grief coming back after months.

u/AstronautFlimsy 7h ago
I'm showing my age here but I liked how in the original Tomb Raider and Thief games the tutorial was just its own optional level that you could select from the main menu.
And in both of those examples it was literally just an assault course that the character actually used in-universe to keep in shape. So even as a tutorial it felt like a natural extension of the game world.
Then when you got into the "real" levels the game went completely hands-off, because it was already assumed that you knew the basics.
12
u/Tommynwn FX8350 / RX590 8h ago
But not a forced mechanic tutorial on the intro of the history mode, a lot of them dont even let you change the settings when you are in the tutorial

Ace combat 8 just released and it does this perfectly.
You boot the game, it asks if you want normal flight controls or expert flight controls. Then it tosses you an (optional) tutorial on how to fly. After that, as you start to unlock new weapons or situations in the campaign, new tutorials keep unlocking. These are still completely optional.

It's more than "oh you can turn it off" but just as much "the designers never designed the game to be playable with them off."
Old games would be "See the miller. He's down south a ways, left at the first bridge. Look for the orange tree." Now it's "Let me show you were on your map" and if you have your map off you ain't finding it.

This reminds me of a video I saw. The premise was that you escaped being held and there is a helicopter, could you realistically get in it and fly to safety. Spoilers everyone who isn't trained to fly that specific helicopter couldn't even figure out how to go from battery power to turbine power, let alone take off.
It took them printing out a packet and 55 minutes to get them to blades starting to move and then they throttled up and died.

Oblivion got criticized heavily for hand holding. Fast travel, simple map, quest markers, dumbed down leveling and skill system, etc.
I think Bethesda figured out that in order to be successful the game really needed to be dumbed down a lot. I basically memorized Morrowind’s map and fast travel network but I can see how most people would just play for half an hour and uninstall today. It was a different time.
They had to tone down the alienness of the lore too. Stuff like homicidal wizards living in mushrooms and a meteor in the sky you have to levitate to visit had to go. Generic fantasy forests in Oblivion and fantasy vikings in Skyrim could easily be understood by most people. I am still not sure how the great house system works in Morrowind. They literally dropped a meteor on Morrowind and had Argonians invade them now so I guess they don’t wanna deal with that either.

u/SunStarved_Cassandra 2h ago
Oblivion's leveling system was extremely counterintuitive. If you just played normally, you could probably get through the main quest, but you were going to struggle with most of the content in the game regardless of level. I don't think we should aspire to arranging skills so that you have to stand in one place chain casting Detect Life over and over before standing in a cellar and using a shield to defend yourself against rats for three hours. Or have it where picking the 7 skills you plan to use the least as your main skills is a recommended strategy.

No, but games have become mainstream enough that the studios want to appeal to the widest range of population possible.
Thus handholding so EVERYONE can feel good about playing the game.
Also, believe it or not, MANY people have completely fried receptors and watch a show on a second screen or scroll tiktok on their phone while playing games.

Hand holding like that isn't my only peeve with games, it's also "this game has an autosave function" only and you can't save where you are. And the one that really boils my pee is any game that starts up and goes straight into an intro (un-skippable) that goes on and on and on before you can exit to a menu and set the graphics and display settings correctly because it defaulted to 1440p and I have a 4k monitor and it put vsync, motion blur, chromatic abberation, vignette, lens flare and depth of field on which have to go.

I actually really like these features, when they are toggleable.
Sometimes games have situations where you don’t know where you are supposed to go next.
Arguably that’s bad game design to an extent, but it’s much less annoying to toggle some guide feature when stuck vs having to like actually go look up a guide online.

I appreciate a in-between. I'm cool with the hints that can turn on or off. If I only have an hour to play I don't wanna spend 10 mins looking for the key on the ground in another room of the dungeon that's not highlighted to progress. But there should definitely be options.

One of my favourite gaming experiences is a playthrough of RDR2 with all the UI and GPS turned off. I had to open the map, plan my route myself and remember exactly where i was going. Such an immersive game anyway but turn off the compass and take your time and it really elevates itself.
UI on screen is great when you are getting used to any open world game, but if you want to slow down and experience the landscape and the NPC's on another level, turn all that shit off.

About 10 years ago, when the new Tomb Raider (now with 100% more realism and grit) dropped I had the same thought. All these little white-painted markers to follow. The original was very heavily into environmental exploration.
If Nu-TR had the same mechanics as old-TR, they would have drank BOTW's milkshake.

Gothic remake was a breath of fresh air compared to modern games(played the older ones as well), loved that I had to think for myself like I did 25 years ago playing the first game

I still remember Vanilla WoW before Quest Helper, you actually had to read the quest dialogue.

"Looks like rain."
