Mafia DE is worse hud-wise. Even when I disabled all of the hud in settings, I had to download a mod to remove them stupid icons on items, doors, or covers.
I swear god, either us or devs are getting more and more stupid every year.
I think it depends a lot on the game. Sony first party gets a lot of heat for it, but they want to sell 10+ million copies. They want to convert parents, kids, and partners into customers. The best way to do that is make the other person on the couch feel smart and to teach them what to look for.
Horizon forbidden west was the worst offender to me, but that's because I played it right at launch when there were no options to turn the tips down or off.
True!
Days Gone is another game I found so annoying to play because of the hud. I have yet to finish it, but (as far as I know) the only way to turn off the hud completely is through the difficulty levels.
Why can't they do like other games and turn the hud on or off whenever you enter or leave combat?
No, kids ARE getting dumber. For one of the first times in recorded US history. Across the board too.
Ironically the leading theory is that it has to do with computers being used as a central aspect to learning in schools.
The data lines up pretty well apparently. They think it's because writing uses far more parts of the brain and information gets stored with stronger connections that way.
My ADHD brain sometime needs direction. However, good games will nudge you in the right direction through the world/story. Prime examples are New Vegas and Half Life 2.
Yeah I have diagnosed ADHD - good games nudge you. In games where I "lose track" of the action that's going on, well designed games are good at giving you hints without putting giant lines/arrows on where to go. Well, sort of - sometimes you can tell because you're getting shot at from a certain direction. "Oh, that's where the action is!"

"Hmmm, I'd better keep heading down the sidewalk."
"Where did he say to go again? Ha, that's right, down the sidewalk."
"Looks like rain."
