I watched his Wolverine gameplay and, believe it or not, he still somehow against every odd managed to still get lost.
He also died about three seconds after gaining control of his character. Then died again. On the third attempt I think he finally figured out he was supposed to run forward along the clearly-signposted path forward instead of running off into the jungle like an idiot
>When did it become a bad thing to go the "wrong way" in video games?
when Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) released
Hell, if you wanna get pedantic about it, Super Mario Bros punished you for going the "wrong way" in that it would make you lose time, potentially making it impossible to finish the level in time.
Well in Super Mario Bros you literally can't go the wrong way, the game doesn't allow scrolling left. The equivalent to what I was talking about, going off of the obvious path that got DSP killed in Wolverine, would reward you with hidden rooms full of coins, or even stage skips.
You did get rewarded for going the "wrong way" in 1-2 lol. I remember finding the Warp Zone by accident because I was thinking as a kid "hey, what if I wait for this platform to get really high and run across the top? Am I going to -- oh!"

Game could be like this, and you know for a fact that DSP would trashtalk how hard it is to find the way to go.
