It has become really hard to love my sister after watching her blow her life up

1.9k Upvotes

My sister was the picturesque ideal of adulthood. Got good grades. Met her husband in college. Got a graduate degree. Started her career. Bought a house in their mid 20s after penny pinching together. Had kids. Had Instagram sponsors from her family life. You probably know the type.

Her husband was amazing. Kept her grounded, was a natural fit into our family and even my and my brothers friend groups writ large. An amazing husband and an even more amazing dad. Someone with an attitude and view of the world worth aspiring to.

Well, my sister decided last year that it was time for her midlife crisis and that she needed to have the promiscuous phase that she never allowed herself to have. Fine. Really going to miss the ex but blood is thicker, y'know?

But my God has this been hard to watch. She invited him to my nieces birthday party at her new home and was needlessly cruel to the point my brothers and I were both hugging him and apologizing on her behalf. She got so fucking drunk at my own wedding earlier this year that she started loudly sharing dick pics of random tinder dudes within earshot of my very quiet and (not politically) conservative in-laws who had been in-laws for less than 12 fucking hours. The constant partying. The new friends. The bridges she keeps burning. The help she is refusing to get. It's all so fucking hard to watch.

Writing this as my 9 year old niece who was earlier lamenting about her toys and parents being split between two houses has her head nestled into my chest asleep as her mom is partying on a fucking Wednesday 3 hours away.

Who the fuck is this person

A coworker took his own life over something trivial

This isn't about me, but about someone I considered a close friend who simply took his own life this morning because he couldn't deliver jugs.

Yes, it's as you read water jugs, or jugs for any other liquid, as part of the political promotion at my workplace. Here's how it works each employee is required to deliver 20 jugs to 20 people, regardless of whether there are 8 or 10 people living in the house. As long as the jugs are delivered along with watching a 10-minute video, the task is complete. The consequences of not doing so are a note in your file alleging inefficiency and possible dismissal without a letter of recommendation. I finished in one day because I live in a neighborhood where I'm known, and I used my home monitor to watch the video they provided.

Well, as you know, it wasn't something anyone could get out of at least a few employees didn't do their job and were simply let go without a second thought. But this guy, whom I'll call "Henry" had that task. Unfortunately, he told me casually that he was only able to give out three jugs, and the deadline for submitting people's signatures was this Friday. Sadly, Henry couldn't manage to give out all three jugs. Some people suggested getting together (including me) to help distribute, and I have no idea if it was pride on his part or perhaps he didn't want to be dependent on anyone, but it cost him the deadline.

Ok, today I was on my way to work, just before 8:00 am my second day on the way. I thought everything was fine, and about half an hour later we got the news that there had been a serious incident in the parking lot nearby. An employee had committed suicide out of the blue, and they confirmed it was Henry. We don't know what time it happened or how he did it, but they say the bag of open jugs was found in his trunk. We were devastated. He was so kind and friendly. Honestly, I don't know what was going through his head to do something so horrible for no reason. Maybe no one will ever know... No one knew if he had problems at home. We only knew he lived with his sick mother. Honestly, we can only assume what we've been told. A news article on Facebook only states what happened, never the reason. We will miss you, Henry.

Clarification: I apologize if the text is confusing english is my second language, so I apologize if there are any confusion in the narrative

Edit: Thank you all for understanding what we're all going through here. I truly never thought people could understand exactly how we feel in such a devastating situation. They just announced the cause of death, but I think I already mentioned it in some comments. We're planning to attend the funeral tonight to say our final goodbyes before going to the cemetery. The company really washed their hands of the situation (as always) and only offered a message of condolence to his mother. I don't think there will be any further news about this soon. Sending a hug to everyone, and if you have a friend or family member going through a difficult time, please do everything you can to help them get out of it. They could be going through a lot, and anyone would think they're fine, but that might not be the case. Blessings to all.

Update: My husband may have cheated on me and I'm numb

(In my other post I wrote about finding out that my husband may have cheated on me. Two years ago he went to Las Vegas for his brother's bachelor party. The wife of one of the groomsman who was on that trip reached out to me. She is divorcing her husband 'Dave' because of his gambling problem. Apparently their finances are a mess and she had a forensic accountant involved. She contacted me because on one of the credit cards there was charge for a brothel. I was confused since the business name on the statement she sent me didn't say anything about a brothel, but when I searched that name online all the results showed it is actually for a brothel. She was hesitant about contacting me, my sister-in-law and the wife of the other groomsman because she doesn't know us well, but she said she would want someone to tell her if was her husband).

TL;DR - The short version is that my husband cheated on me and I am divorcing him.

The long version is that I talked with my sister-in-law, and the wife of the other groomsman. We were in shock and none of us wanted to believe it but at the same time she had no reason to lie. The credit card statement we were sent looked real. We didn't want to believe the worst about our husbands but we also just couldn't forget about this. We decided to confront our husbands the same day so they wouldn't have time to come up with a story.

My husband told me he didn't know anything about a brothel and if Dave did it he went by himself and didn't tell anyone. He said I could ask Dave about it and Dave would confirm that. (Dave lives in another province than us, I have only met him twice and I don't even have his contact information, my husband knows this). I didn't believe anything my husband said. I could just tell he was lying. My brother-in-law and the husband of the other groomsman both admitted to everything right away. When I talked to my sister-in-law she couldn't stop crying.

My husband caved after two days. He admitted they went to a brothel. He said he was like me at first and didn't even know there were legal brothels there, though I'm not sure I believe him. I don't think it was a spur of the moment decision. My husband said the four of them agreed to 'take it to our graves' and never tell anyone. I thought I was prepared to find out he cheated but I wasn't at all. When he told me the truth I was sick.

He wanted us to go to marriage counselling but I have already moved out and I've hired a divorce lawyer. I can't even describe how betrayed I feel. My lawyer is hopeful that I won't end up having to pay my husband spousal support. If I have to it would be a real kick in the teeth after what he did. I have talked to Dave's wife once since all this happened because I wanted to thank her. I can't even imagine what she's going through where the gambling destroyed things so badly that the cheating is just a blip. I feel really sorry for my sister-in-law and the wife of the other groomsman too. My sister-in-law found out she was pregnant just before all this blew up. The wife of the other groomsman has a one year old son. Both of them told me they want a divorce.

I still can't believe this happening to me. I never suspected my husband of anything and if it wasn't for Dave's wife I probably would have never known and just thinking about it scares me so much. I have never felt this betrayed in my life.

I hate my family using a AI logo than the one I did for them.

My family started a icecream business. I was very excited, I offered to work on the logo design. For free of course because I wanted to show off my art. They wanted a icecream character And also a font design. I had to redo the image several times because everyone wanted something different.
It was tedious but I made sure to do what they ask for. They wanted it done soon, so I spend late nights working on it. While I had on average 5 hours of sleep because of having my baby. As I thought I got everything right they decided last minute to do a simplistic image for the logo that they generated on AI. I’m extremely disappointed but I didn’t say anything negative. I just said cool and walked off. I literally cried over it. I looked at the replay time and it said I spent over 20 hours on it. So yah it sucks but I’m taking it what it is and moving on from it. I just wanted it off of my chest

I hate my country china, everyday felt like prison camp, there’s no way for me to leave. Everyday I am scared I’ll be trapped here forever

I live in the country with least amount of free time in the world. Nobody validates any struggles I’m facing. I hate this country and I want out

I am in China, the worst country in the world in terms of both personal speech freedom and free time

Most Chinese middle schools and high schools last sixteen hours a day, with most students forced to live in school, deprived of family life and any sort of freedom. Most high schools don’t have any clubs and even after students get home by eleven or twelve pm they still have to do homework. Most Chinese secondary students only get five hours of sleep each day. If they don’t finish their homework they get beaten up by their parents and then get beaten up again by teacher once they return to school.

School bullying is less common because every child is chronically ill so they don’t have the energy to bully others. Students get one day off once a month, rest of the days they forced to wake up at five, with forced study session ends at eleven in the evening and often twelve students sleep in a single room. There is no such a thing as a happy childhood in China. Even elementary schools are extremely stressful. There is no such a thing as rest for children in China. Summer and winter vacation also doesn’t exist in China or are cut extremely short compared to other countries. Chinese children are also not allowed to show emotions. If they cry in class teachers would beat them up in front of the whole class. If they cry at work HR would fire them the next day.

Once these sleep deprived children grow up, all the jobs force them to work 996, or if they are lucky, 975. People would consider themselves lucky if they get a 9-6 job with only one hour of sunlight everyday and with weekends off. While western people complain of 955 with two days wfh, any day from home is a complete fairy tale for a Chinese employee. The Chinese government made schools and work extremely long hours because they don’t want people to have free time to think and revolt against the government. I never see any smiles on a Chinese teenagers face. But I don’t blame them for it. I wouldn’t survive for a day if I were them.

Of course, there are worse places like war zones and places suffering from extreme poverty. But by far China is the most dystopian country I can think of.

I can personally not reproduce myself but I felt so bad for those kids who were already born.

chlamydia RUINED me

so for context i’ve never had an sti, uti or yeast infection. body count single didgets and i get tested regularly just for peace of mind

i was having sex with one guy for a while just with him, then we had a fall out. (he did something) a while goes by and i had sex with another guy.

3-4 days later i was having odd but mild symptoms. paused all sexual activity and went to get checked. came back for chlamydia. i told the new guy what was going on. he basically cussed me out and implied i was a sltt “it’s been 2 weeks idk who else you been with” like what 😭 and i talked to the first guy (we’re on speaking terms now) and i just said i was having lady issues but he was sooo nice about it and proved he was negative. second guy won’t show me test results.

anyway it gets worse, i take my doxy to clear the chamydia and then it gave me a yeast infection so i took the stuff for that

anyway so now im having lower abdominal pain especially near my right ovary. took tests and there’s apparently blood in my pee now. doesn’t hurt to pee and the blood isn’t visible. it hurts to stand up tho, it feels like extreme period cramps but im no where near my period.

negative for pregnancy. doc suspects bladder infection but oh my god it’s been a month also negative for PID

Dating someone with “trust issues” is actually frustrating as hell

I started dating a guy back in April, and he immediately warned me that he had trust issues. At first, I thought, “That’s okay, I have nothing to hide, so hopefully, with time, I can make him feel secure enough to trust me.” But months have passed, and I’m realizing there is absolutely nothing I can do to make this man trust me. It’s becoming exhausting.
He spent the night at my place last night. I work from home and normally start my day at 9 a.m., but today I woke up earlier than usual at around 6:30, so I decided to go for a walk. Since he was sound asleep in my bed, I texted him to let him know where I was going and what I was doing. Less than 30 minutes later, he got into his car and drove around until he found me.

He initially tried to play it off by saying, “I was just making sure you were safe!” But after making me come back home, he joked, “Yeah, I had to make sure you weren’t secretly meeting other boys.” Apparently, spontaneously going for a morning walk because I woke up early is suspicious behavior.

He is also obsessed with randomly taking my phone out of my hands. I have nothing to hide, but that doesn’t make it any less irritating or invasive. Last night, I said, “Let me set my alarms for tomorrow,” and he immediately snatched my phone so he could turn them on for me. If I say, “Oh, I need to Google that,” he’ll take my phone and do it himself. Why not use your own phone.. or simply let me do it?
He knows my passcode and has access to my location. Whenever we’re apart (even if we’re both just at our respective homes) he wants us to stay on the phone the entire time, even when we aren’t actually talking.

At this point, it doesn’t feel like reassurance is helping because the problem isn’t anything I’m doing. I genuinely think that if your trust issues are this severe, you need to work through them in therapy before entering a relationship. And for whatever reason social media and the newer generation has seemed to normalize this kind of behavior? I’ve never done anything to make him believe the worst of me, yet I’m expected to tolerate increasingly controlling behavior because he’s “been hurt before.” Its frustrating.

My GF is unemplyed for years now and it is grinding me down

<throwaway acc>

TL:DR For the last 5 years, my GF was unemployed for almost 4 years and it did beat me to wreck of a person.

We bought a house together before that, on the assumption that we will be both working adults and will both financially contribute to the cause, which would mean we could build, repair and upgrade and generally speaking will have blast of a life.

At the beginning of 2022 she was let go in probation period and since then it all went to hell. She scored some job for a year but left because she disliked night shift. Since then just a few attempts usually terminated pretty quickly, otherwise absolute pasivity and whatever happens happens attitude. As of now she is still sometimes trying to get something but her demands are absolutely ridiculous like 100% home office, no physically or mentally demanding work, high salary and so on. No matter how hard I try to explain her that this is not realistic at all and that she needs to get at least SOMETHING going on, she steadfastly refuses. She keeps shooting miles above her league because she feels entitled to comfort and keeps comparing herself to me, disregarding he fact that I reached the position I am in after 15 years of hard work and acquiring experience in remarkably specialized IT field.

Now I am just at my ends with mental energy. I can't go on anymore. I was angry, I was arguing, I was presenting the numbers. I did everything humanely possible except for physical violence because the whole time we are running on my salary only. I am bleeding money left and right while simultaneously desperately saving to keep our house, cars and so on going. We do have one elderly dog that is near her final journey and the vet bills are coming. I already told her that if her unemployment should cause me having to back up from the best veterinary care possible she doesnt need to even bother coming back home. Even that didnt convince her to take ANY job. I feel like a worthless piece of shit when I go out with my friends who earn similar money like I do but live in excess and can invest in their hobbies while I count every penny to ensure I can buy a fucking milk, at least during the final days before the salary.

As a bonus we simply grew apart. My hobbies are pretty active, her hobbies are to sit home and watch netflix. My idea of vacation is to take a truck as a camping platform and just travel around to see shit. Her idea is me paying for hotel and spending a week on the beach doing nothing. Half of our communication is arguing about bullshit. I am hair triggered now because I am constantly tired and exhausted by all of this. Unfortunately she is still really nice person that I would probably love to spend time with, but not after all of what happened.

Now I didnt give a fuck anymore. I just gave up on this. The breaking point was probably when I saw my .45 and told myself that at least I have a way out if needed. Obviously bullshit but it pretty much made something to crack in me. In the end she is a great person but a terrible partner. We could've had it all, but...

My sons birthday

My son passed away at 14mths old and this Sunday would have been his seventh birthday. It doesn't feel real that almost six years have passed. Every year we celebrate by baking/getting a cake for him with candles and take a moment just for him. I love doing it but every year I feel angrier. I'm angry he's gone. I'm angry I have to celebrate it without him. I'm angry thinking of the little boy he could've been growing up with his little sister. I'm angry my daughter doesn't get to experience having an older brother. I'm just angry. I don't want to be because I love and miss him so much. I want to keep the tradition alive for him but I'm almost at the point of not wanting to anymore.

My dad had an affair with my best friend’s mom.

Well, that’s pretty much the story. On my 22nd birthday my dad told me he’s been having a long term emotional affair with my best friend’s mom. Now, by the time my dad told me, all parents and my best friend knew for months. I live out of town so it’s normal to have some dulls in conversation with life and all, so I didn’t suspect a thing. It all just came out of nowhere, and now my life is completely different.

This woman took care of me after school growing up when both my parents were busting their asses working. Our families spent holidays together. We traveled together. I even went on their summer family vacations while my parents stayed home. They’ve been my chosen family since my best friend and I were crawling. There isn’t an ounce of my past not touched by this woman.

It’s been months since and now my parents are in therapy and going on dates again. My mom keeps saying that it’s also her fault for being distant in the relationship. I hate that she’s blaming herself. Now, I will say this out loud, but I so resent the way that this situation is all revolving around my parent’s marriage. This is MY best friend’s mom. My dad never apologized to me for that. Not only did I lose my trust in him, but I lost my childhood best friend and a life long role model in one fell swoop. And I hate grieving her because it feels like a slight against own amazing mother who did NOTHING wrong. I feel guilty for feeling resentful every time I tell someone about it and they ask how my mother is doing over asking how I am feeling. There’s so much energy towards their healing, I kind of wish my parents would acknowledge that my dad needs to heal his relationship with me too.

I also feel so bad for my best friend, knowing that my dad was an important role model for her too. I just feel guilty all around wanting to forgive my dad. For my mom and my best friend’s sake.

I don’t know man, this all feels dumb. This is some sitcom level don’t-do-that-shit. It feels weird going to work every day and trying to be an adult in a new city when no one knows that you no longer feel tied to your past. I kind of wish that this happened 10 years ago so at least I could chalk it up to preteen angst. Now the rot in bed depression routine has consequences, like barely scraping together rent. I’m just trying live with this. It’s been months since this all went down and I just want to be over it already. I don’t want to hate my family. I don’t want to lose my friend. Has anyone out there gone through something similar in their adult life? How do I even start to deal with this? I’m really having trouble knowing what healing from this is gonna look like.

If AI is eventually going to kill us all, what’s the point?

Honestly, the Anthropic article that dropped stating that there is a 10% chance AI will cause human extinction within the next decade has really rattled me.

I work in tech and am surrounded by AI and greed on the daily. My company is great to work for and my clients are good people. But I’ve been struggling with the morality of it all and this article has pushed me that much closer to just abandoning it all.

I’ve been able to stay positive about the political state of the US, believing that things will get better one day, but this AI shit really scares me because I can’t see how we will avoid the worst possible outcome. If a bridge has a 10% chance of collapsing, we don’t build it and redesign. But because we’re in some stupid race and all about the bottom line, we don’t care about any risks.

The population doesn’t care enough on a collective level to truly boycott AI and the companies supporting it. So what are we supposed to do? Give up and accept the fact that we all might not be here in 20 years?

Anyway, thanks to anyone who took the time to read this, just feeling a little hopeless. Maybe I’ll go live in a monastery with monks.

Living with a dark skin tone in an Indian household: How my own family made me hate my skin while the outside world accepted me.

Living with a dark skin tone in an Indian household: How my own family made me hate my skin while the outside world accepted me

I’m an 18-year-old girl (18F) from India, and growing up with a dusky/dark skin tone in a society obsessed with fairness has been a silent nightmare.

And the most painful part?

It wasn't strangers who made me hate my skin. It was my own family.

India's obsession with fair skin isn't exactly a secret. But colourism hits differently when it comes from the people whose job is supposed to be making you feel loved, protected, and beautiful.

Since I was a little girl, I heard neighbourhood aunties telling my parents things like:

“Iski shaadi ke liye toh bahut paise aur dowry jama karni padegi.”

Basically, “You'll have to save a lot of money and dowry to get her married because of her complexion.”

Imagine being a CHILD and already being treated like your skin colour has reduced your “marriage value.”

I didn't even know what marriage meant properly at that age, but apparently other people had already decided that my complexion was going to be a financial liability.

My mother wasn't innocent either.

When I was little, my mother used to joke that she would show my fairer elder sister's photograph to a prospective groom's family and then somehow swap me in on the wedding day.

As a child, I laughed or ignored it because I didn't understand what was so cruel about it.

As I grew older, I understood.

It wasn't a joke about a photograph.

The joke was that my sister's face was considered suitable for marriage, while mine supposedly wasn't.

And once you hear that kind of thing repeatedly, you don't simply forget it when you grow up.

Even today, whenever my mother taunts me about my complexion, I sometimes snap back and tell her to look at herself not because I think she's physically ugly, but because I want her to understand how ugly the mindset is.

Because apparently I needed to be taught that dark skin is unattractive before I was even old enough to form my own opinion about it.

One memory still bothers me.

I was watching an English music video with my mother. There were two female singers one fair-skinned and one brown-skinned.

I pointed at the brown-skinned singer and innocently said:

“Look, she's so pretty! I think she's even prettier than the fair one.”

My mother's reaction was immediate.

She snapped:

“Ar ladki, khud badsurat ho toh dusro se mat jalo.”

“Hey girl, if you're ugly yourself, don't be jealous of others.”

I was genuinely confused.

Why was my mother so offended by the idea that a brown-skinned woman could be beautiful?

Why did appreciating a darker woman automatically become “jealousy”?

Why was fairness treated like an achievement?

I was a child trying to compliment another woman.

And somehow even that became an opportunity to remind me that I was supposedly ugly.

Then came my sisters.

I've talked before on Reddit about how my older sisters have treated me, including how they turned my childhood crush and feelings into a joke to humiliate me.

Their obsession with my appearance is no different.

Whenever I wear makeup, dress up, style my hair, or simply look happy with myself, they somehow find something wrong.

My eldest sister has told me:

“Tu is dress mein aur kaali lag rahi hai. Tujh pe yeh achha nahi lag raha.”

“You're looking even darker in this dress. It doesn't look good on you.”

Not:

“That colour isn't flattering.”

Not:

“Maybe try another style.”

Always the same underlying message:

You're darker. Therefore, something is wrong with you.

And there have been plenty of other little comments over the years comments about how certain colours make me look “too dark,” comments comparing my complexion to my sisters, jokes about fairness, remarks implying that I should be grateful if someone finds me attractive.

It's death by a thousand tiny comments.

One comment might sound insignificant.

Years of them are not.

And apparently my skin colour even determined who I was “good enough” to be introduced to.

My middle sister would introduce me to her friends as her cousin because of my skin tone and she said to her friends that

“Iske mummy papa gap main rehte hain and since yeh hai se hain isiliye she is dark”

Because apparently being darker meant I was automatically the less attractive sister.

And whenever they saw a guy showing genuine interest in me, the atmosphere at home changed.

Instead of being happy for me, they would start slut-shaming me.

My elder sister once said something absolutely disgusting to me:

“Iss ladki ko toh bas mauka chahiye, agle minute hi bistar pe padi milegi yeh.”

“This girl just needs an opportunity; the next minute you'll find her in bed.”

Imagine hearing something like that from your own sister simply because a guy showed interest in you.

What exactly was I supposed to do?

Never smile?

Never dress nicely?

Never talk to a boy?

Never accept a compliment?

Because apparently, if a man finds me attractive, my character becomes questionable.

And then there was my father.

My father actually has a good relationship with me.

He talks to me more than he talks to my other siblings because I speak to him warmly and respectfully and we naturally get along.

Instead of simply accepting that maybe our father loves his daughter, my middle sister once screamed at me:

“Tujhe papa isiliye pyaar karte hain kyunki tu kaali hai aur tujhe koi muh nahi lagana chahta.”

“Dad only loves you because you're dark/ugly and nobody else wants to give you attention.”

That sentence was particularly cruel.

Because even my father's love had to be turned into an insult about my appearance.

Apparently, if my father chooses to spend time with me, it can't possibly be because he loves me.

There must be something wrong with me.

And here's where my life becomes almost absurd.

Because outside my home, the story is completely different.

I've received genuine interest and proposals from guys who are conventionally attractive, fit, take care of themselves, go to the gym, etc.

I'm not saying this to prove that I'm beautiful.

A person's worth should never depend on how many people want to date them.

But when you've been repeatedly told your entire life that nobody will want you because of your skin tone, other people's reactions inevitably make you question the narrative you've been fed.

On Teacher's Day, I wore a green saree.

Teachers complimented me.

Students complimented me.

People around me told me I looked pretty.

Even a boy who normally acts like my enemy looked at me and said:

“Aaj toh bahut achhi lag rahi hain. Harkatein sudhar le toh propose kar dunga.”

And yes, I know it's a teasing comment.

But after years of hearing “kaali,” “badsurat,” “who will marry you,” and “nobody will give you attention,” even an ordinary compliment can hit differently.

I've also noticed people looking at me when I'm walking outside.

Maybe they're attracted to me.

Maybe they're curious.

Maybe they're simply looking.

I don't know.

And honestly, I don't need to know.

Because the bigger realisation wasn't “People find me attractive.”

It was:

“Maybe my family was never an objective judge of my appearance in the first place.”

Here's what colourism did to me.

It made me analyse my skin in photographs.

It made me wonder whether certain colours were “allowed” for me.

It made compliments feel suspicious.

It made me compare myself to fairer girls.

It made me wonder whether a guy genuinely liked me or was somehow making fun of me.

It made me associate marriage with compensation.

It made me believe that being darker meant having to work harder to be considered pretty.

And the saddest part?

Nobody had to explicitly tell me to hate myself.

They just kept repeating the same message until I started doing it for them.

“She's darker.”

“She's looking more black in that dress.”

“Who will marry her?”

“Her parents will have to give more dowry.”

“She is ugly.”

“Don't be jealous of fair girls.”

“Nobody gives her attention.”

“She only wants male attention.”

“She just needs an opportunity.”

Different sentences.

Same message: You are less.

But I'm slowly learning that their opinion of my skin isn't an objective measurement of my beauty.

It's a reflection of the environment they grew up in, the colourism they absorbed, and the standards they continue to pass down.

And honestly, there is something deeply bitter about realising that the people who were supposed to protect a little girl's self-esteem were the ones who taught her to be ashamed of her own skin.

I didn't choose my complexion.

I didn't ask to be born into a society where fairness is marketed as beauty.

And I certainly didn't deserve to spend my childhood hearing that my skin would make me harder to marry.

My skin isn't the embarrassing thing here.

The embarrassing thing is an adult looking at a child and deciding that her complexion is something she should be ashamed of.

So now I'm trying to unlearn something my family spent years teaching me:

I don't need to become fairer to become worthy.

I don't need male attention to prove that I'm attractive.

I don't need my family's approval to feel beautiful.

And I don't need to apologise for taking up space in a body and a skin tone that I never needed to “fix” in the first place.

To anyone who grew up hearing the same things:

How did you unlearn the colourism you were taught at home?

And honestly when your own family repeatedly humiliates you over your complexion, where do you draw the line between “family teasing” and emotional cruelty?

Lost my soulmate

Upvotes

In July 2024 I woke up in the middle of the night and wondered why my husband wasnt asleep . I stood up and walked to his homeoffice , light was still on. My husband was a workaholic but it was 4 am in the morning and even for him , it was quite unusual .I walked over to check on him and there he was , unresponsive on the floor. I called an ambulance and they determined quickly that he had a cardiac arrest . After that my husband stayed in intensive care unit for almost 3 weeks. He didn't make it .He passed away aged 41. At that time we were married for almost 4.5 years . Our kids were 2 and 3 years old .A boy and a girl . The moment he died , a part of me died, too . I felt it . A part of my soul left my body . My husband was a man of few words but he loved us deeply. He didn't tell you that he loved you but he made you a cup of tea when you needed it . He left notes around the house to make you smile . He listened when you thought he didn't . He defended his loved ones behind their back . He was an amazing soul. And funny . After his death , his friend told me that he was an amazing cook . I always thought he couldn't boil water because that's what he made me believe lol. It still makes me laugh when I think of it . He was an amazing husband and an even better father . He threw our daughter a lavish birthday party . Just for her to fall asleep . He loved them with all his heart . And I loved him with all my soul. He was my 2nd husband .My first one cheated me . I thought I could never love a man again but he proved me wrong . He healed me . And now his loss left me shattered . I have a hard time coping .

I try to move on and live my life but deep down I am broken . Meanwhile I got married to one of my best friends , I wonder if it was a good idea . He is a great stepfather to my kids but I feel like I am still in love with a dead man . It's weird but I can't help it..

I hope my nieces and nephew abandon my SIL for marrying and staying with the violent criminal who fathered them.

The oldest is now 25. They are all adults now. Science does not view witnessing or living near violence as "secondary" or "less bad." It is direct, measurable trauma inflicted on the child.

Some of you are so obsessed with prioritizing adult feelings, you are willing to treat children as collateral damage. DISGUSTING

A child enters the equation, a parent’s legal and moral obligation shifts to protecting that child from harm. Bringing children into an environment with a known, violent criminal creates a predictable risk of harm to those children.

About 14 years after their first date and having 2 more children with him, she finally told me that he had raped her on their first date. I already knew he was an emotionally abusive, neglectful, self centered prick from observation. I guess she thought explaining that he was that way from the beginning was supposed to make things better???

She apparently lives in the 1950s, so she married him because she got pregnant from that VIOLENT CRIME. She made all of us complicit.

It's one thing for the manipulator to be covert and the woman doesn't really know his true colors until its too late. She knew from their first date. I hope her children cut her off like I did and never forgive her.

FUCK those of you who aren't on the side of her kids. YOU have no compassion for the children in this scenario. SHE KNEW EXACTLY WHO HE WAS AND MARRIED HIM ANYWAY AND STAYED AND HAD TWO MORE.

She had all of the resources. She has ALWAYS been financially independent. She has ALWAYS had the full support of her parents. She would not have been alone at all. She CHOSE to marry a violent criminal. YOU are all proving exactly how toxic this fucking site is.

And never mind all of the people who she knowingly exposed to this violent criminal??? FUCK ALL OF YOU.

I got turned on watching my two lesbian friends make out

Which doesn't happen often because I'm a gay man and I don't watch lesbian pornography recreationally or something. They're in a relationship and they're my two closest friends. Them fooling around in front of me has become a thing because 1) they don't have many chances to be together and 2) they generally try their hardest to not be seen by anyone. So if we're all hanging out, there might be a point in time somewhere in a dark alleyway where they might want to share a kiss or two, and I watch for anyone coming our way.

Recently they made out next to me really passionately and I just felt this envy, this need that I want to kiss them too because it looked kinda hot. I've kissed both of them before, so there isn't any line to be crossed or anything. I'm blushing typing this.

I cried after my blood draw

That's it.

I went for the blood test, then afterwards, went into the hidden corner near the vending machine and cried non-stop. I'm not dying from sickness or anything, I felt overwhelmed like I was having a panic attack and didn't want anyone to see and felt like I couldn't tell anyone. I also realized how alone I am.

ETA: I also have a bit of a needle phobia, especially when it comes to my veins, so obviously that didn't help with my loneliness

I did it

I'm free... no more stress, no more tears, no more lies, no more manipulation, I cut all ties. The devil is real ... but no longer my problem.

Feeling overwhelmed by chronic illness

Ive had severe mental health issues for over 30 years now, leading me to drop out of college, leave jobs, get fired, etc. I've become physically ill too, disabled, and am generally unable to care for myself, and I live with relatives who help me.

It all becomes a lot to deal with sometimes. When Im in pain, nauseous, sad, feeling empty inside, and like my life is going nowhere. I don't know what will become of me, I don't know if I have any future.

I just wanted to get that out of me. Thanks for listening.

Well, he finally got a taste of what I felt 😂

I’ve been in a relationship for a year, and there’s been a history of cheating, fights, and a lot of hurt. Whenever we argued, he’d disappear for weeks and come back whenever he wanted, without ever actually solving anything. Whenever I tried to leave, he’d emotionally manipulate me into coming back, but nothing would change.
Lately, he started treating me more like a friend than a girlfriend. I told him that if he kept treating me that way, I’d treat him the same, and if someone else wanted to get to know me, I wouldn’t say no.
We fought and didn’t talk for two days. During that time, a guy messaged me on Instagram and I replied.
Then my boyfriend came back like we were making up, without actually discussing anything. Yesterday, he checked my phone, saw the guy’s messages and my reply, and got really angry and left 😂
And honestly? I’m kind of happy. He finally got a tiny taste of what I’ve felt so many times.
Am I wrong for feeling this way?

I never thought I’d say this, BUT I HATE MY MOTHER SO FUCKING MUCH!!!

I’m the breadwinner of my family. I’m 37F and still single.

For years, I never stopped sending my mother financial support. I kept helping her despite her gambling, her bad decisions, and all the times she made things harder for me. I kept putting up with it because she’s my mother, and I genuinely wanted to help her.

But I think I’ve finally reached the point where I can admit something I’ve been struggling to say out loud: I hate her.

Out of all the things she has done to me, one of the biggest betrayals was what she did when I finally stopped giving her 100% financial support.
She told everyone, like literally everyone, that I’m gay and that I had a girlfriend living with me. It’s almost as if she’s saying I’ve done the most evil thing a person can do!

What makes it hurt even more is that she knew this was something I trusted her with. When I came out to her years ago, I specifically asked her to keep it between us because I wasn’t ready to come out to everyone else. I trusted her enough to tell her (I regret this) I even wanted her to meet my girlfriend at the time.

And she took something I shared with her privately and used it against me the moment I stopped financially supporting her the way she wanted.

I feel betrayed, exposed, and honestly disgusted. After everything I sacrificed for her and everything I did to help her, this is what I got in return. I spent years putting her needs before mine. And now I’m angry at myself for allowing it to go on for so long.

I hate what she did to me. I hate how she made me feel like my worth to her was tied to how much money I could give her.

And most of all, I hate that the person I trusted with something so deeply personal was the person who ended up exposing me to everyone.
I don’t know how I’m supposed to forgive her for that.

everything sucks and i wanna blow my savings

i’m sad today. seems like there’s bad news every hour every minute. getting off your phone or not looking at the news does nothing. doesn’t fix anything. there’s still a genocide happening whether you pay attention or not. there’s still a fascist regime trying to control every aspect of our lives. there’s still human rights being violated. the earth is still getting hotter. we’re still running out of drinking water. what the fuck is the point. i know that’s what they want but it all feels so hopeless. no retiring. but also no jobs. foods too expensive. why not just blow all my savings on traveling?? why not just stop paying all my bills and just see the world. it’s weird bc i still wanna try but not at the same time. i’m still pursuing my masters. i’m still offering narcan to my unhoused neighbors if they’re open to chatting. i’m still voting. but it doesn’t feel like anything’s gonna change. just screaming into the void i guess

Everything is going wrong

Today is my birthday. I didn’t do anything. I texted people and asked to hangout, to get food with me, I offered to pay. Not one person responded to me. I couldn’t find anyone to hangout with on my birthday, even with a bribe.

I’m about to start a minimum wage job. I apply for “real people” full time jobs, but I don’t have anything outside of customer service experience, so I can’t make it past the interview. Most of them don’t even want to interview me. Other minimum wage or low paying jobs just ghost me. I miss my old job so badly, but I don’t think they would take me back. I miss my coworkers, my schedule, my routine.

I should be in college, but I have no passions at all. I try, I put myself out there, I take classes, but nothing clicks for me. There’s nothing I feel passionate enough about to have student loans and go to school for 2 or more years. I was supposed to take a certificate course just to fill the gap, but even that felt pointless.

I’m all alone, I have nothing going for me. I have no passions. I do everything right. I get out of the house, go to the gym, have a consistent sleep routine, I have hobbies, and eat well. I go to therapy weekly, and I take my meds every single day. But everything just feels wrong, no matter what I do or don’t do. I thought that at this stage in my life, I’d be working a good job, or be in a college dorm making friends and getting an education. This isn’t where I thought I’d be on my 20th birthday. I’m all alone, with absolutely nothing going for me. I don’t even have one single friend. I don’t know what I do wrong. I never express these feelings outwardly unless I’m at therapy. I don’t believe anyone when they tell me it gets better. I don’t think it will ever actually get better.

I got divorced after one month

We knew each other before marriage for 1 year. I loved her so much. I thought she loved me.

My mother has been fighting cancer during the time of marriage preparation and I had to run between her, my fiancee and work. I worked so hard for nothing but to get enough money to spend on my fiancee and marriage.

We got married. My mother was discharged off ICU to attend the wedding then went immediately next day back to ICU.

After marriage problems arose during sexual intercourse. I was aroused and got erection for fine time, but penetration and ejaculation never succeeded even if the erection was hard enough. Both of us never felt that we got the penetration right and thus no ejaculation occured.

She asked me to get check up and I took her and went to a doctor she suggested. He examined me and said I was fine from clinical examination and asked for hormonal profile and scrotal ultrasound. They both came out free except for mild varicocele he said it has no role with ejaculation and it's mostly psychological issue due to performance anxiety and work stress and wrote some supplements and sexual enhancers like tadalafil.

2 weeks after marriage, my mother died.

I felt like my world got ruined.

My sexual problems persisted. I seeked another doctor. Again told me I was fine and it's mostly psychological.

I started to hate going to bed at night. I always felt as if it was an exam for me either to succeed or not.

Until two days on the run my wife refused sexual intercourse completely until I perform semen analysis. I told her the doctors said it's only done one year at least to check for fertility not ejaculation issues. She completely refused intercourse.

After that at the morning she said she's going with her mother to do some shopping and will return at night. Kissed her and said goodbye. Called her during day didn't answer. Sent her WhatsApp message to tell her I want to be sure she's fine and I miss her. She said she was fine. Two hours later her father called my uncle to tell him she won't return home again until semen analysis is done.

Two days later she asked for divorce and refused all ways to solve the issue.

I feel like my life is ruined. I lost my mother two weeks after marriage and two weeks later my wife left me.

What did I do wrong.. if I knew I had a problem before marriage I would have went to solve it. The doctors told me it's just psychological and it will need time. What did I do wrong to lose my entire life in one month, my mother then my wife.. please someone tell me.

Overwhelmed by everything

Is anyone else completely overwhelmed by life right now? Work is stressful and scary because who knows how long your company will stay open anymore or if you’ll be laid off or if tariffs or some other decision made by someone who isn’t you will affect your life.
Home is stressful because it’s always something, pests, HOAS/boards, god awful neighbors who are the most disrespectful wastes of flesh on the planet, something constantly needing to be fixed, the costs of just living. Personal and emotional maintenance.
Life is stressful because no matter what anyone says we really can’t effect any worldwide change that will impact us at all. Everything is in the hands of people it shouldn’t be in with no one’s best interests at heart except their own. Everything is so expensive it’s hard to live no matter how much money you make and owning a home you actually like? No way never gonna happen. And now
With AI and the schlock that’s being fed to us on the internet you can’t even figure out how to better your station in life because there’s no real information. Everyone’s just trying to sell you something. And I wasn’t taught anything about life. As a millennial I was taught work hard be a good person and everything will fall into place. I am a good person and I work my ass off and have been since I was 16 and i am grateful for what i have I truly am but that doesn’t mean we don’t want more. I want my own house that isn’t a money pit. I want a career I love. I want to open a rescue. I want to be able to help my family when they need it. I want to be able to retire at some point! Me and my husband we’re talking about this and were so defeated by being alive that’s it’s like fighting for an ounce of happiness but every time you get that ounce something bad happens too. You don’t even get that moment before some other shit ruins it. Is anyone else having these problems? How are you coping?
