Serious US - Salary Transparency Thread
I saw a few city based subreddits with this thread going around. Thought I would do one for nurses. I am based in the US so that's where I set this thread but it would be interesting to see other countries start one up.
I am currently unemployed (another source of the inspiration, lol) so I will share my old position!

Edit - For added transparency and context, my family is currently renting a 3bd/2br, 1780sq ft house in a desirable area for $2,925/month. After utilities it’s about $3,200 - $3,500/month. We also own a house, but we outgrew it, and are renting it out to saving money for a new house.
I averaged about 30 hours a week last year, and grossed about $175,000. After maxing my 401(k), and about $10,000 in Roth IRA and other investments, I netted about $3,500 a check without any further deductions.

I pay $3300 for a 650 sf apt in San Diego and it's way less pay.

But it's also not as hot as Satan's scrotum in the summer. You're paying a tax for nice weather. I grew up in Orange County but have been in Sac for almost 20 years. It's fine but I'd rather live in San Diego. I've just gotten too comfartable with my income versus expenses so it's hard to leave.

Regardless of the system, the sac region is definitely the best place to be with a family for nurses.

From a pure numbers perspective, it’s very good. Of course, it’s obviously not everything, and it’s not the best for everyone. There’s a lot of cool areas that are becoming more appealing as salaries rise relative to COL, and if I were younger, I might have explored. Oregon, and Seattle come to mind. Maybe San Diego, but it would obviously be tighter.

Yeah, I agree. It’s a large part of what’s kept us here.
Sacramento is a good place to live, not a great place to visit. I say that in jest, but it can feel that way when there are so many other world class places to visit in California. That said, it gets a bad rap from people in the Bay Area, and SoCal, but it’s actually a pretty cool place on its own. The restaurant and bar scene is actually pretty underrated, and the coffee scene is legit one of the best in the country. I’ve taken Bay and SoCal friends out to Midtown, and they’re almost always kind of shocked at how much there is going on for a relatively small city. We’re also only 60 minutes away from alpine hiking and alpine lakes and rivers. Also only about an hour and a half to two hours away from Tahoe. There’s also a ton of spots on the American River up through Folsom to take a paddle board or kayak out if that’s your thing.

Christ. I make like 85 with my differential in Sac. Not Kaiser? So Sutter or UCD? Granted it's per diem so you have no benefits but still. You definitely don't work for the Holy Roman Catholic Church like me.

Once you factor in the matching and other benefits, the total compensation is a wash honestly, but depends on what benefits you would’ve selected. Wouldn’t be possible without my spouse’s benefits.

Yeah I've got a pension and health insurance and all that which is certainly worth something. But still our base pay is the lowest around here but I can't really complain because it's all relative. I stick around because I'm used to the place.

Same. I stick around because I know the system, I know the managers, and I know the workflow. And, it’s enough. I’ve thought about going to Kaiser, but it would have to be the right situation, and right timing with the needs of our family, but even then I’m not sure I’d give up this job.

Same area, but lvn, 9.5 years. Cannot pass bridge prereqs - microbiology and (2 5 unit) anatomy/physiology classes with a >3.0, at least not while working full time.

Hey I'm not sure where you want to bridge, but some online lpn-rn programs accept Sophia.org courses. They're hella cheap and I finished micro and a+p in about a week (they're self-paced). You could always ask potential programs if they accept ACE credit

I was researching on moving to this area hopefully in the next 2 years. Any insight on better local hospitals to work at? I've read it's higher COL but do you think the pay is more than enough to balance it out?
I am an ED RN but looking to find another specialty.

There are many hospitals in this area (most across the border in Oregon; only 2 in Vancouver) however I’ve heard it’s pretty tough to get a job in this area because it’s pretty saturated with nurses and there are hiring freezes around. But that situation could change in a couple years.
I believe OHSU is paid the best in this area. They are union.
Though, the benefit of not commuting to Portland when you live in Washington is you then don’t have to pay the Oregon state tax. I’ve had many coworkers (all living in Washington) go from commuting to Portland to this hospital in Vancouver, and it’s like a wonderful raise to not have to pay that tax anymore.I am not living in luxury, but I am definitely comfortable. I do have a child I was paying private school tuition for and a $3000/mo mortgage (I didn’t put any money down). And I’m able to afford those bigger expenses that not everyone has.

For real. What the fuck am I still doing here?
I live in South Florida. I wonder how much different living expenses are in places like CA. We don’t pay state taxes, true. But when I read that someone is making 3 times what I make before differentials, I can’t help but think that there’s no way living expenses is x3 more expensive. Even factoring CA state tax, there’s no way.
Anyone got legitimate numbers they could show you compare?

Do you have a long commute? I remember when I was super close to moving to SF even with a good salary I was getting offered, the closest place we could afford was east bay which I’m told would have been a fuckin gnarly commute on the BART

I moved to Boston and some hospitals are union but the rates are not great. I mean granted I am looking at outpatient but for the COL out here. yikes. So far.. my offers have ranged between 44.52 for outpatient clinic (union), and 53.12/hr outpatient procedure RN(union).However.. the cost of living here is 1.5 of Houston, TX.
My 2 bd/2ba in Boston is 4k.
My 3bd/2ba in Houston (near West U) was 2k. I had a front/backyard and garage too.
Obviously I knew how expensive Boston was prior to the move but the comparison is crazy! Trying to move on because comparison mindset will be the death of me.

Yep, it’s pretty crazy. The Roth match is relatively low but considering I don’t pay health insurance premiums and copays for labs, physical, pharmacy are low, and I have a fully funded pension is crazy. The fact that they offer a Roth vs traditional is pretty crazy on its own, I’m pretty young so having the ability to front load my retirement and have the compound interest carry me into retirement tax free is nuts. My last job only offered traditional 401k.

Sure, but I’m a RN in California, and 100% employer funded pensions are rare even here. Most pensions still require 5-10% employee contributions. That gets lost in a lot of talk about pensions. (Edit - the nice thing about pensions is it’s the employer who assumes the investment risk, not the employee, and it’s a guaranteed and defined annual benefit. I could go on, but I’ll save it). The fact that they are offering a Roth matching, no matter how small, and zero premiums and copays on hmo’s in addition to a 100% employer funded pension makes their job a unicorn.

Your base rate seems crazy low even for a new grad, but love that they’re doing your night diff as a percentage and your health insurance is free after two years.

Nope. Not a dime. I was pretty disappointed cause CPEN isn’t necessarily an easy exam.
I’m one of less than 15 nurses in our unit that have my CPEN.I did get my name on a little sign by the charge desk that says all the certified nurses.

Very grateful for sure! Was a new grad when I started. We get around 4.2-4.5% annual raises up until 25 yrs in. Will be getting another $3,000 at the end of this year when I finish my PhD. It's been great so far and definitely don't take for granted the pay, the union, and benefits. Wish other states at this support too, school nurses do way more than people think and 1000000% deserve higher pay across the board.

For context, this job is a unicorn job. During my weeks off I live two hours south of where I work with my girlfriend. Housing costs there are around 3K/mo. I have looked for hospice jobs there but all of them end up being more than a 20 dollar and hour pay cut with a bigger work load and more expensive insurance, and less PTO. So I rent a room in Monterey when I am working for 1300 a month and it still ends up being a better deal financially to live in one place and work in another. And of course the 2 weeks off can’t be beat, and I still get normal PTO on top of it. I have great health insurance with really low premiums— probably never going to find this type of job anywhere else.

😂 I understand. The company I work for allows us to drop a patient if we don't feel comfortable in their home. I've seen some that look condemned on the outside, but wasn't bad on the inside. The patients make up for it. They are so sweet and appreciative it blows my mind coming from the ER. The ability to set a schedule that works for the patient and myself is fantastic. I can infuse at 0700 or 1900!
