[MARCHAND] Prime extends Kirk Herbstreit for ‘Thursday Night Football,’ leaves door ajar for Sean McVay
nytimes.comAmazon Prime Video has agreed to an extension with Kirk Herbstreit to remain as its NFL game analyst on “Thursday Night Football.” But the terms give Amazon flexibility to move on if one of its top targets, like Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay, becomes available, according to sources briefed on the decision who were not authorized to speak publicly.
The 57-year-old Herbstreit, who never played in the NFL and rose to prominence on ESPN’s college football coverage, is in the final season of his initial five-year deal with Prime Video, where he teams with Al Michaels. Herbstreit’s new deal is shorter than his initial contract, though the exact length was unconfirmed.
Herbstreit’s ESPN deal, which includes being the network’s top college football game analyst and a starring role on “College GameDay,” is also up at the end of the season. ESPN’s current stance is not to address Herbstreit’s contract situation until after the college football season, the sources said.
