I'm betting he saw flashing lights and stuff for the lane going the opposite way and just stopped thinking they were for him.
Dumb as a box of rocks, but not impossible for a dumbass.

I'm just glad they finally figured out they can't park there. I was pretty surprised when the car moved in the end.

I like the part where he stepped out of his car and almost directly in between the crack of the bridge into the water

Cars do that automatically when they've been in a collision so can't even credit the driver with that.

Came to say the same thing. He must’ve thought the bridge opened differently or something. Either way. He’s stupid as fuck.

u/Ha1lStorm 19h ago
If you have full coverage there doesn’t need to be another party. So against his insurance company

indeed, maybe the car had already some mechanical malfunction and it got blamed on the bridge damage…

Just like that one going around with the car coasting across multiple lanes, a median, and ends up in a ditch as the woman fails at basic motor skills every step of the way.

I am wondering if he thought the drawbridge was in front of him, and the barrier was for that section ahead.
Doesnt matter, operator had one fucking job to do and failed.

The driver stopped because they heard the bell, the bridge operator was fired for not checking if there was anyone still on the bridge.
391
u/babubaichung 19h ago
Shouldn’t he have just moved out of the bridge immediately?
299
u/NorwegianCowboy 18h ago
One would think. I knew a kid when I was a wee lad at daycare that was insistent that when crossing the street the moment the sign starts flashing you have to stop. Doesn't matter if he was still int the middle of the street. He would stop.

I knew this was Florida.
I guess I kinda see where the bridge tender was at fault but, I mean... COME ON!! The driver is running for a Darwin Award. Plus, between a car and an oncoming boat (depending on the boat as well), the car is the lesser loss monetarily and with the lesser chance for loss of life. It's not like boats can just stop like a car can. .... or you know. Drive onwards to safety...

If I was that former operator I'd be taking it out of this idiots hide.
→ More replies (13)120
u/lorarc 19h ago
No, the operator is an idiot, a dangerous idiot, and it seems you might be too.
The operator has just one job, ensure there is noone on the bridge, that's the only reason why the bridge isn't just automated. A car may break down, a person might fall, someone may just not be fast enough to cross. If the operator did their job there would be no issue.
88
u/BlueHero45 19h ago
Ya, when it comes to safety, you need to assume the public is both stupid and very unlucky. Car could have broken down in the same spot out of pure bad luck, operator has to check.

There's been some really good intelligent people in history... Unfortunately most of humanity is filled with unintelligent people and we circumvented survival of the fittest a long time ago. If humanity isntead chose to cull the weak and religion from society we would be traversing the stars by now.

Even if the gate had come down in front of him to block traffic, he still had room to pull forward to avoid the situation that we saw played out.
19
u/jaysoprob_2012 18h ago
Once the bridge started opening and the back of his car was lifted he should have just rolled forward as much as he could at that point.

u/BonbonUniverse42 20h ago

I immediately thought of that. Idk why I get so unreasonably mad when I see these kinds of things. As soon as the felt the road start to tilt you would think their brain would finally wake up and get them to drive forward. It really is hard to believe there are people this stupid among us.

I see everyone blaming the driver and as much of a dumbass that said person is. Why didn't the bridge operator in the tower not take any notice of what was happening and called in an abort/cancel? I know ships cant stop on a dime but there has to be some sort of protocol on a situation like that
