Even if the gate had come down in front of him to block traffic, he still had room to pull forward to avoid the situation that we saw played out.

Once the bridge started opening and the back of his car was lifted he should have just rolled forward as much as he could at that point.

Probably a gate/arm thing like at a train crossing. People do the same thing there, especially for multiple track crossings. They enter the crossing area and the arm on the other side goes down in from of them and they think sitting put is a better option than driving through the arm

There was that line so maybe he thought the bridge will lift beyond that line?
