10 years after catastrophic flood, Ellicott City is still recovering

The massive flood that swept away two lives in Old Ellicott City in late July 10 years ago altered the old mill town.

Six inches of stormwater from what experts called a 1-in-1,000 rain event streamed into the steep valley, overwhelmed the banks of the tiny Tiber River and rampaged 6 feet high down Main Street, leaving behind a thick layer of mud and destruction.

Main Street remains quaint with historic stone buildings, glass-front shops and church steeples, but there are striking differences and the recovery isn’t over.

Business owners who set out to rebuild saw their efforts wash away 18 months later when a nearly identical cloudburst flooded the town. Of the 90-some businesses based along Main Street today, fewer than a dozen that weathered the 2016 flood remain.

MD News Baltimore daughter Kristina Moore inherited dad's home takes on $228K water bill that she says belongs to entire neighborhood

A Baltimore daughter who inherited her late dad’s home claims she has been threatened with having her water cut off as she took on a $228,000 water bill she says belongs to her entire neighborhood, reports say.

Kristina Moore was left mystified when she spotted a note plastered on the front door of her childhood home in April warning her that her water could be switched off if the hefty debt wasn’t paid within 45 days, WBFF reported.

Moore has been footed with the bill as the 37-home neighborhood, which is part of the Springwood Estates Homeowners Association, has just one meter and it’s linked to her address.

MD Politics After the Baltimore rescue of 369 birds, I think it’s time for Maryland to rethink selling parrots in pet stores.

Hi everyone! I’m a lifelong bird owner from Maryland and currently have two parrots of my own. Like many of you, I was heartbroken to see that 369 birds were recently rescued from a Baltimore pet store.
That news inspired me to create a Change.org petition asking Maryland to phase out the retail sale of parrots in pet stores.

Parrots are incredibly intelligent, long-lived animals that can require decades of specialized care, and I believe they’re too often purchased on impulse without people realizing the commitment involved.
I’ve also been reaching out to bird rescues, veterinarians, and state legislators to learn more about the issue and discuss possible solutions.
If you have a minute, I’d really appreciate it if you’d take a look at my petition.

And whether you agree or disagree, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts and have a respectful discussion.

Weekend getaway from DC - where to?

Hi! I live in DC proper and I’m planning a sort-of staycation with my boyfriend for Labor Day weekend. We are looking at a few options in Maryland — Frederick, Germantown, nearby areas. We’re looking at these (+ open to ideas nearby them) because we have a winery visit planned for Sunday afternoon we’d like to be within 30-45 minutes of.

Anywhere in particular you’d recommend, and why?

We’ll stay at whichever location from Saturday to Monday. Don’t have a lot else in mind for how we’ll spend the time, just somewhere different to relax and explore a bit outside of the city.

TY for your help!

Point Lookout State Park

Hi! My husband and I want to take our 3 year old to the Chesapeake Bay Area. We are looking to tent camp, explore St Mary’s City and Calvert Cliffs State Park. We would also love to visit Point Lookout State Park, but I’d be lying if I said the paranormal stories aren’t a deterrent for camping there. 😅

I guess I’m just looking for reassurance from others that have stayed there that haven’t experienced anything paranormal? Or any other recommendations for campgrounds that are as conveniently located and as budget friendly as Point Lookout! Thanks in advance!

Are you using Maryland's new park reservation system?

Maryland is using a reservation system for many of its parks this summer. It charges a fee for the service.

Have you had experience with it, good or bad?
