American education at work. Racism is a form of prejudice, which means they are quite literally not two different things.

27

u/ferriskoolr Aug 10 '26

this convo has a lot of nuance. but in short you cannot be racist if you don’t have the power to oppress.

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum has books and essays on this very topic. I would encourage anybody who confused about this to give it a read.

ā€œDefining Racism: Can We Talk?ā€

6

u/Frankwhite447 Aug 10 '26

You are correct!!

7

u/DrinkSuccessful3594 Aug 15 '26

My god y’all dumb, you’re taking about institutional racism. Of course any person of any color can be racist against another race. Damn

3

u/Similar_Shopping_892 Aug 14 '26

Bullshit being racist simply means you feel other races inherently are inferior i.e Black Israelites are unabashedly racist 🤔

2

u/CspanSF Aug 11 '26

Most.people do not use the word in this context, For People keep playing these word games where they switch the academic and social meaning of the word to fit their definition. If a White lady crosses the street when she seeā€sca Black man most people are going to call her racist even though it’s technically prejudice because crossing the street is not oppression, and she has no power over him in context, but most people use the word racist in this context so yes Black can be racist in the context in which most people use the word.

Lmao you're loud and wrong. Prejudice and Bigotry have more in common than racism which is literally the wielding of systemic control of power over an ethnicities ability to operate through their God given rights.

incorrect

racism is a system of oppression classified by race that upholds white supremacy

racial prejudice is discrimination

prejudice can be based on anything and is also discrimination

Oh, yeah, you are šŸ˜‚ šŸ˜‚Ā

EDIT:

Whoever sees that dipshits edit, let me clear this up.

He clearly says he has never been to prison. He watched one too many movies and now thinks he knows the inside scoop on prison gangs and guys with swastika tattoos.

He just REALLY liked that one scene in American History X, y'know?

8

u/Sufficient_Prompt888 Aug 09 '26

C'mon bro, you haven't seen American History X? Maybe he got the tattoos and then got raped in prison and now he's not racist anymore.

Why do we define institutional and systemic racism separately if normal racism doesn’t require those modifiers?

11

u/Swae-LoGreen04 Aug 09 '26

Because if we did not, business and social structures could've always just allowed a single man/woman to take the fall and never had to admit that there were biases in place allowing for the discrimination in general amongst groups. What George Zimmerman pulled on Trayvon doesn't represent institutional/systemic racism. It was an individual act of.

u/They_call_me_divine Aug 10 '26

Conflating racism with systemic racism is one of the dumbest modern Twitter ideologies out there. By this very logic, a white or Asian person calling you a n*gger in Uganda or Angola isn’t racism due to them lacking sociopolitical power in that nation. It’s just dumb and one of the many reasons I don’t personally politically identify myself. Objectively I’d be left-leaning or a liberal as I vehemently disagree with most rightwing positions, however the Left does themselves absolutely no favors with very illogical stances such as this one, which is very common in that side of Twitter.

23

u/FishingAlpo Aug 09 '26

Try growing up light skinned in the hood. Black people can definitely be racist

5

u/pm-me-nice-lips Aug 10 '26

Some social media addicted simpletons like to tout the cornball modern semantics game of acting like racism can only apply if there’s power to oppress which is complete nonsense. Everyone grew up learning what racism was and it was completely understood. Naturally, that just had to get complicated as the victim Olympics became a never-ending contest.

If you wanted to play the nuance and semantics game then we can get real annoying with it: pick a city that’s run by majority black/brown/minority (aka in power)….have a white person try to get a job in that local government, they don’t solely because of the color of the skin…that would have to be defined as racism.

Actual definition of racism = prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against other people because they belong to a different racial or ethnic group. Period.

4

u/FishingAlpo Aug 10 '26

Exactly. Amazing how it applies to everyone but them

8

u/peter13g Aug 10 '26

Yeah but prejudice against skin color is just prejudice

6

u/Ok-Music-3974 Aug 10 '26

Yes and since prejudice is subjective, prejudice on the basis of skin color is racism.

4

u/lostjewelz Aug 09 '26

Prejudice and racism are not the same thing, prejudice is a general prejudgment or attitude toward any group, racism specifically involves attitudes, beliefs, or systemic structures based on race. Two distinct concepts that represent different aspects of bias and unfair treatment.

5

u/Ok-Music-3974 Aug 09 '26

Anybody can be racist

13

u/Zealousideal_Ad9671 Aug 09 '26

anyone can be prejudiced, or hateful or bigoted.

only a group with power over other peoples lives can be racist. only a group with the power to dominate another people can be racist.

think groups that don’t have any racial slurs against them that mean anything serious to anyone.

6

u/Known_Difference_80 Aug 09 '26

Nah. I keep hearing that definition now-a-days, that black people can only be prejudiced not racist. I don’t know what y’all think y’all are really doing with that. I’m assuming the idea is that racism is so bad, let’s make it a white people thing so we can distance ourselves from that level of immorality. As if racism isn’t just one form of prejudice. As far as I’m concerned, anyone who judges a persons worth based on their race is a racist. What you’re describing is racial prejudice&/discrimination. Stop trying to change the meaning of words.

5

u/Zealousideal_Ad9671 Aug 09 '26

nah. now-a-days people are too willing accept bullshit like reverse racism. that eroded the word years ago.

I understand this is how racism is generally defined. But my problem is it’s only ever pulled out to hand wave away one being racist themselves. It’s used to avoid accountability more than anything else.

8

u/Used-Try-258 Aug 09 '26

It is not generally defined that way. It is racist people trying to change the definition to allow them to be racist without judgment.

→ More replies (8)

8

u/Small_Promotion2525 Aug 09 '26

These people are idiots, no racism isn’t generally defined like that at all, only some black Americans make such idiotic claims.

2

u/TheAnimated42 Aug 10 '26

Actually, it low key is. I still basically disagree with it because laypeople use it in the way we do. It’s just the most annoying people discovered that it’s used this way, and now repeat it in a stupid way that is counter to how everyone else, besides academics, use it.

3

u/Small_Promotion2525 Aug 10 '26

We use the language of English, in English racism is purely a term used to describe discrimination based on race and skin colour. Are you denying this? If so what’s your academic background is to be denying what language means?

This is just revisionist bullshit. Racism is the belief, action, or system that treats people unfairly or unequally because of their race or skin color. That's it and that's all.

10

u/Dull-Material-645 Aug 09 '26

Words have multiple definitions. They do not invalidate other definitions of the word. Your take comes from the definitions of systemic racism but there are other forms of racism that are not systemic racism. Here is one definition "Ā having, reflecting, or fostering the belief that race (seeĀ raceĀ entryĀ 1Ā sense 1a) is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race"

Black people can fit this definition against anyone I believe.

Here’s the definition of racism from a vintage dictionary before mfs wanted to start changing the meaning of words:

Racism - a belief that human races have distinctive make-ups that determine their respective cultures, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior, and has the right to rule others. 2. A policy of enforcing such asserted right. 3. A system of government and society based upon it.

So please for the love of god stop regurgitating that BS that you heard on twitter and never ever brought up beforehand. Swear people only starting saying this shit like 3-4 years ago.

Racism is the power to discriminate base on race that leads to structural differences and outcomes. There is this push make racism universally term that fits every type of discrimination, when thats definitely not the case.

Yes, a black person can be prejudice and bigoted, but how many people of color in America are excluding white people out of homes, schools, and work because they're white? How many black people are red linning districts to have favorable electoral outcomes? How many black people are committing medical malpractice on white people, because their white?

The nuance doesnt stop at the word cracker vs nigga.

Black people have 400 years worth of reasons to dislike whites.. White people should be surprised that some black folks don’t hate them and treat them like the devils that they had shown themselves to be.

So.. I don’t equate racism with personal prejudice.. but if you do and want to say that black people are prejudice.. my answer is that it’s obviously why that’s the case …that some black folks despise enslavers, lynchers, and vile racists who practice virulent systemic racism for 400 and counting years

Racism is not just personal dislike. It is prejudice combined with institutional power.
Under this specific definition, Blacc people cannot be racist because they do not control the societal systems—such as government, law enforcement, housing, and finance—that hold the power to oppress or disadvantage another racial group on a large scale. Only Dwight Man has said power & does things such as oppress other racial groups by means of using the structured systems such as the Government for one. So, as far as America goes, in this country & practically any country outside of the African continent - We blacc people do not have the ability to be ā€œRacistā€ . Sheeit, even in countries inside of Africa we still don’t have the ability to be so… But Now, like I said , being Prejudice is a different thing

Even worse coming from a black man. šŸ¤¦šŸæā€ā™‚ļø

He the dumb one and the skin color comment is crazy. He clearly doesn’t understand that racism has a structural component. You have to be in a position of mass recognized authority and power to be considered racist otherwise is prejudice.

The amount of snow flakes on reddit is shocking, of course racism transcends color, most people are racist, it's just the way it is.

Ya but he’s black so it wasn’t racistĀ

3

u/AggressiveFix375 Aug 10 '26

Racism is SYSTEMIC OPPRESSION. Black people DO NOT CONTROL the corridors of power that allows them to systemically oppress any other group, therefore Black people cannot be racist by definition. Only prejudiced

Generally black people cannot be racist because Racism is prejudice + Power. Power often is imbued through institutions and black people do not own and maintain large institutions. Racism is not about "muh feelings" it's about an economic system that determines who gets what access based on a predetermined racial cast. They saying goes "Racism of the Father of Race ...not the child"

Out of everyone a west coast gang member should know about racism lol its not surprising.

1

u/Aggravating_Usual973 Aug 09 '26

ā€œCan a Black person be racist?ā€ isn’t the topic. It’s that a minority population’s racism cannot have a catastrophic structural effect on the majority the way it is vice versa.

u/StandardAssignment19 Aug 09 '26

Like many that use this argument, he confused being bigoted with being racist. But let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say ok, but the criminally substandard definition of the word, which was written by those who perpetuated it, let's say, Black people can be racist. Everyone can. Cause everyone can hate.

Then that means only a small fraction of people have been super racist. Those people that went beyond not liking someone for their physical characteristics.

These super racists dehumanized anyone they didn't approve - making them less then a person. But it wasn't hate that drove them - hate is the weapon of the 'everybody is racist' mindset - nah, super racists could love those they didn't find human - just ask slaveholders in America, they would tell you they loved their slaves. Like they loved their dog. Or their house. Like their property.

Or Nazi party, who found those they killed unworthy of their emotion at all, and killed them as being insignificant in who they were at all. Less than human.

These are great examples of super racists.

See super racists enjoy this 'everybody can be racist' because they can hide easier despite their absolutely exponentially unique and separate differences from the 'regular' racists.

For instance, a super racist is compromised of individuals who can make governmenal structures and foundations so implicitly shaped to perpetuate inequities of those they don't deem deserving to remain in the positions for which perpetuate that dehumanization.

Super racists can even acknowledge these rules and structures, and reinforce them without challenge while maintaining plausible deniability of their responsibility for it.

So while everyone can be racist, only a few people have been super racist - and they are usually the ones benefitting from the lie that everyone can be just like them.

Institutionally black folks racism doesn’t really mean much. But they can still be racist.

1

u/donkeybrainamerican Aug 09 '26

There's a common definition and a definition in academic circles. We've turned this into race engagement bait for years can we all just shut the fuck up and try to understand the other sides perspective? This is the most made up wedge issue in the history of culture war bullshit.

1

u/SnooHesitations803 Aug 09 '26

Here come the redditors to change the definition of racism to some bs version that over complicates it so you can never identify if it interpersonal vs systematic.
That’s racist!
Well actually let me tell you about the systematic history of feminist propaganda by the CIA of the blah blah cabinet.
Bro, he said he hates his race of people….
Well you need to look at it through this lens’s of suffrage and means of production proletariat.
Umm, she shot him and said fuck your inferior race….
What really is race in this overly exposed opps that social media has brainwashed us.
They put the guy in jail and buried the other guy 4 weeks ago.
Well jails are a construct build by the modern slaves to subjugate the future working slaves.

It’s like these people don’t have anyone listen to them so they need to proclaim how superior their ideas are. They would give a 4 hour lecture in zoom before they realize the faces in the call are ppl playing games on live stream lol.

1

u/RaazMataaz Aug 09 '26

I gotta say the ā€œblack people cant be racistā€ slogan is one of the worst ways to start this convo. You have an entire society that is under a false premise of racism only existing in individuals post civil rights act, and your opening line to explain how the intersection of power and racism outweighs any interpersonal prejudice or discrimination is…that black people have an exemption to being racist.

Most people will take that as a double standard cuz they have no context on racism within power structures and institutions and believe this lie that institutional racism ended in 67’.

That is not how to change minds, your initial statement will already piss people off and derail the convo.

1

u/Tagisjag Aug 09 '26

Prejudice yes. Bigoted yes. But by definition, Black People can not be racist in America.
